50 years ago you when you started you would have never guessed anywhere close to .160" . Thats what experience will do for you, .162" Not bad! I have seen you do this on other occasions. It's uncanny👍 The old Clausing will love you Keith. New hardware is alway a good reason for celebration. BTW happy early birthday
I treat myself to a Bison vice for my 67 birthday in October. It's really nice gear and it's not easy to get a Kurt here in the uk. Happy Birthday Keith.
Happy early birthday Keith, Well deserved gift to yourself. I was lucky to score a NOS still in original oil wrappings Bison Chuck a few years ago love it
You say you want a "new" 3 jaw chuck... are you MACHINIST enough to make it fit? Of course you are, you are half a century into your apprenticeship! YOU ARE A MASTER MACHINIST! Happy Birthday Sensei!
Well happy birthday in advance. He he. I like your style. I buy myself some stuff for the workshop as well from time to time. Good stuff. Man that is a proper lathe. I’m sure she is going to love her present.
Congratulations my friend.. Very nice job as usual and a well deserved "B" Day gift! Really nice talking with you today Keith, you really made my day! Based on our conversation, hopefully I will be able to come and visit you and your significant other in late spring, early summer! Until then, be well! Razor!
There's something about lathes, watching them and listening to them. I only have a couple of hours on an engineering lathe. But a lot on wood lathes. They can tell you a lot about what's happening if you take notice.
Olá amigo Keith, que maravilha de placa, sempre que possível ´é bom se presentear!!!Aproveito e deixo aqui meus parabéns pro amigo com muita saúde e sucesso sempre!!!
I think Keith is setting himself up with a really nice retirement shop and is just getting it set up with all the good tooling for when he finally retires. Lol I hope it takes him quite awhile longer to finish upgrading!
Happy Birthday Keith! MY 66th Birthday will be the 21st. I'm retired now, but I started my Engineering/Machining career in 1979 and every job I've had had "Engineer" in it! Sales Engineer to start, then Warranty Engineer, and a few just Engineer...
Happy Birthday Keith! That's a great chuck! I ordered a R8 collet chuck with my Precision Matthew's lathe last year December. Though I knew it was on backorder, PM was glad to take my money up front with no promise dates. I felt the chuck was at a fair price for the quality so I proceeded with the order. It just arrived last week!
Not sure if you mentioned it, but for posterity, it's important that the inner faces of the back plate and chuck have clearance in them so that the chuck is only making contact on the register and outer flange. I only mention this because someone might have a cheap chinesium back plate with a lot of runout or you are making your own and it's easy to miss that you've taken a thou or 2 more off the register than the depth you have so you end up tightening up to the inner face instead.
hello I like this topic installing a new lathe chuck but when you said Bison it touched me that I also have one. It's our company from Poland. Very good product. From now on I'm proud of you that you work on our domestic products. translator
I have always favored Poland made tooling, wheel cutters and chucks are my most commons purchases. china has been chocking your contry out of a lot of suppliers here in the states, makes me sad, because they supply inferrior products. IMO...
At 3:41 . Every time I buy a quality tool that comes in a fancy box, I tell myself that I wish they would spend less on this fancy packaging and sell the tool cheaper.
I recently bought a Bison, Dickson T.2.T. toolpost for my new to me lathe plus a load of tool holders. I must admit to being very impressed by the quality. I think you will be very pleased with your new chuck.
The chuck registration diameter to backplate is up to the manufactures discretion. You can't mismatch chucks and backplates and expect them to fit. You buy the chuck and backplate as an assembly. Should have known that after 50 years?
Many happy returns from here downunder. Thanks heaps for this one. I think I’m going to try & copy your Chuck lifting “cradle” device, as this has inspired me to have a go, in order to make, 3 & 4 Jaw, and Collet Chuck swaps easier for me. Can I ask why you didn’t just use the lifting eye supplied with the Chuck? I’ll still need to make one because mine didn’t come with a lifting eye but just curious why you didn’t use yours is all. Can I also ask if you think the Pratt Burnered Collet Chucks are worth the $4.5K sh!tsvillian pacific micro pesos they ask for them down here or would a $500 Cheap & Cheerful Chinese one off Evilbay be good enough for a retired hobbyist like myself. $4.5k is half what I paid for the lathe new, it seems a little over the top to me. 🤷♂️ Much appreciated. 👍👍👍🇦🇺
Very nice chuck it all you work with is high persision rounds. there are advantages to the three over the six when it comes to stick outs / abstract shapes on parts.
@@KeithFenner same as me Keith. I had a welding/machine shop early in life, then law enforcement for 30 years, retired 6 years ago and now welding/machine shop again for locals in my area. Much respect for you Keith

congratulations Keith

Happy Birthday Keith. Love the chuck. Someday would love to have a Bison and a better lathe to go with it. Thanks for sharing.

happy happy B day
You should only chuck on clean machined round stock in order to maintain the accuracy of the 3 jaw chuck scroll.
Zero runout makes Keith a happy boy.
So at 40:55 you gave the Polish a little Polish huh ?❤❤❤❤well done Keith
Bisons are excellent chucks. they get damn expensive though!
Happy Happy Birthday Keith !!! :)
Bison owes you something for that instruction manual for new chucks, and showing just how good it worked.
Early Happy Birthday.

2K for another 30 plus Years of use.... That's a Good Deal.
That comes out to about $67.00 a year for a new Bison chuck, you’re right, that is a really good deal.
At 3:41 . Every time I buy a quality tool that comes in a fancy box, I tell myself that I wish they would spend less on this fancy packaging and sell the tool cheaper.
reckon that chuck would half in price when trump gets back in next week?
Made in Poland
Tariffs might have an effect on that.
When you search for buck chuck, it's right next to two buck chuck.... Coincidence?
Happy Birthday and many more 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎂🎉🎉🎉 Trump 2024 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Happy Birthday Keith, NICE gifts for a half cetury machinist and his "Old Girl" big lathe!
Why didn't you counter sink (chamfer)the bolt holes on the back plate after facing it?

Mine is 24 Nov 1952, love Kamala.
You’re supposed to listen to your mother, lol. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions though.
Have a good one!
Is there anything wrong with drilling a hole in chuck and putting eye bolt in for lifting? Out of balance maybe
I have done that as well. once you have lifting gig like I made, never think twice.
Like it, that chuck is true.
So Keith, why a three jaw, rather than your beloved four jaws ?
You need both as well as a dog plate and a face plate, for any lathe, they all have their purposes.
What about a 6 jaw, it seems like a number of machinists are switching to one of those? Any thoughts.
Very nice chuck it all you work with is high persision rounds. there are advantages to the three over the six when it comes to stick outs / abstract shapes on parts.
