Is there anything more adorable than watching all those puppies follow that man around? I love at one point heading back inside one straggler stopped, ears perked and waited for the camera man. Friggin beautiful.
As a dog trainer, I am so happy and proud to see that police dogs in Canada are not trained using aversive tools and methods unlike our neighbors to the south.
Not all trainers "to the south" use adverse methods or tools. I train and work my dogs very similarly to the way the Mounties train theirs. I use a lot of behavioral science and really understand what drives my dogs and what is best for them so they are happy, healthy, and genetically fulfilled.
@@CaffeinatedPhoenix I meant the police dogs in the U.S. are trained using aversive tools but not in Canada. There are many dog trainers, everywhere who use aversive tools and methods, and very few who do not depend on them and use natural and other effective methods of dog training.
@@walkingwithdogs8547 Well, as shown in this video, they are using play and praise to train the working dogs instead of using aversive tools and methods.
If you think they don’t use “aversive tools and methods” you’re sadly mistaken. These high drive working dogs are a little different then the dogs your training, no offence.
I think too many people don't realize training is a two way street. Your dog does need to understand your commands, but you must also be watching your dog, and learn what it does to each situation, their unique personalities, just because your last dog did something a certain way, doesn't mean your new dog will respond the same way, true success comes when a dog leans you, and you learn the dog! And of course LOVE that dog, they thrive on love and praise
Also people make the mistake of humanizing their dog. Dog's are DOGS not human beings, they don't speak English! Treat your dog like a dog! If you don't know what that means, you got your homework!
Reminds me of my training day's. The biggest lesson you will ever learn is to trust your dog. This mite sound simple to a lot of dog owners BUT ALL HANDLERS WILL HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE. WHEN IT HAPPENS YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THIS RESPONSE
This is incredible - I really didn't realise everything that went into training a police dog and it all starts a couple weeks from when they're born - so cute!! Enjoyable to watch!! :)
I volunteer in a kennel that trains service dogs. The breeding programme and selection is very similar. My babies are just learning different skills that will change their “partner’s” life. ❤️🇨🇦
So, what happens to the other dogs who don't pass? A family I know had stated that they received one of these dogs and it "attacked" the one owner of the household. The dog aka puppy (age) was put down. I don't agree with what the family did and I feel like someone was lying (due to me unfortunately knowing the family). They said the dog responded to German commands, but was put through all of this training (police dog training). The owner had received a few bites on the hand and said he was cornered in the bathroom. I personally think the dog was abused while in their care.
So true about that bite force. I myself have Akitas, well socialized, lovely animals. I have a smaller Japanese Akita girl who is a buddy to sick kids as well as visiting nursing homes. My sister fostered a working line German/malinois mix and adopted her. My nice cute Akita could break a raw chicken to some smaller raw bones; no dent on a beef rib. The GS/Malinois broke those bones as is they were nothing. And my sister dog was as sweet could be but it was “What’s next? How about now?’ And now? For hours. Thank you all for what to do. Love and hugs, an old ER RN.🐕❤
I thoroughly enjoyed this well presented informative video. I learned so much! So much goes into puppy k9 selection! This breeding program is producing super Alpha bionic nippers!
velocity it’s basically started with tug and teasing. If the dog lets go before you ask then you tease tease tease so the next time they bite it they don’t let go
I'd like to find more information on the imprinting process that the police use does anybody who where I could find material on the pups need to go through?
The dogs retire at 7 years. If the officer keeps the dog as a pet he gives up being a handler, if he wants to go on the dog is adopted to an approved family.
I wonder what happens to the ones who don't make the cut. I only know of one dog that came from this program. Excellent dog btw. Do they get discarded ( killed)?
Before choosing puppies you have to first select a suitable female and male. Know the bloodlines. What have the bloodlines given, what are the positive and negative things of the male and femal. How can you compensate one with the other. Bloodlines is the basis and yes females are as important for genetics as males. The choosing part we have seen this many time, many different tests, many are not even to be taken serious. It all depends on what type of dog are you looking for. We had dogs lions very diffiuclt to handle for an average handler. And yes many are just average handlers not knowing how to read dogs. Last year someone also tested our litter and some were not ok according to this test. 1 female now active dual purpose police dog, other one passive drug dog. Some pups take longer to get mature. In the end you can select a pup now but knowing the bloodlines, than doing good training will only show you after 1 year if they are really suitable and if they will become an ok , average or super police dog. But even than we sometimes see that there also needs to be a match between dog and handler and yes sometimes the combination is not ideal and another handler would be better.
What if one of the females is a really good leader type characteristic confident and brave what if the dog doesn’t want to be bred I know probably not all of them are bred and I think there is females that do K-9 work right?
females are generaly not used in police work even though they can be just as good. For some simple reason male are generaly bigger more imposing and just by their look impose respect. And if you have a really good female free of genetics defect with the quality needed your going to use it for breeding and obviously the bitch cant work during pregnancy.
@@Sam-qm4vb you know a female dog used for breeding is called a bitch right? They've been called that for as long as anyone alive can remember 😂 Is generally more used in British diction, but isnt uncommon by breeders

That one puppy lagging behind sniffing everything and not paying attention is my spirit animal...
I noticed him.. And thought is he errant? Or is he instinctively acting like a rear guard?

Does anyone know where we can get Gunner Dog Kennels in Canada? Especially in British Columbia but anywhere in Canada will be fine. Thanks
What happens to the dogs that are not chosen? Can they be adopted out?
Susanne Tilger yes
@kiki the gerbil it depends on the aggression and the adoptability and if not put down
Jon Lovits is a K9 handler/trainer now 0:36 ...? I guess there IS life after Hollywood! haha ha
What happens to the pups that dont cut it? Are they sold off or given to RCMP officers? How does that work?
Yes, they’re placed in homes... along with being neutered/spayed when age appropriate.
Well trained dogs but also very smart 😘
I hope they still get lots of Momma time when they're little.

Putting them upside down and putting them in all different directions than some things are crying. That’s sad. OK, I know it’s done for a reason.
