Nate, you choose your own suffering! I told you you don't have to wear all those clothes before and after passing gate agent. I'm a budget traveller myself and I fly with just a personal item. You just need your backpack and collapsible one or tote bag. Wear your layers during gate check if you have to (they never questioned the size or weight of my backpack) and then put everything in your second bag after you pass the gate agent.

Totally. Uniqlo sells a large foldable tote bag that came in super handy when I flew Turkish Airways to Bucharest from San Francisco.
