Elena Dementieva v. Svetlana Kuznetsova 2008 Dubai F highlights

Dementieva's late career resurgence started in Moscow with the win over Serena in October '07, and a few months later, she beat 2 of the world's top 3 in Dubai - one of the best weeks of her career.
This was Dementieva's last win over Kuznetsova, and it was a good moment to do so, as Kuznetsova at this point had lost 6 of her last 7 finals, would lose the next three after this, and only won a title again more than a year after this match.

That's a big reason she was my favorite player back then, I found her to be really inspirational, always fighting despite her many flaws and weaknesses and often prevailing. Check out my latest Elena/Kuz match if you're interested, from 05 IW - that was another good one between these two.

I honestly believed in the early days kuznetsova was gunna be the best of the Russian players. Her groundstrokes were so strong. had margin for error also had the athleticism that Sharapova and safina didn't but inconsistent

Kuznetsova was one of the most complete players in her prime. So athletic and able to play a bruising baseline game as well as a decent brand of counter punching. It's a shame she was always a bit erratic and her footwork could be very sloppy.

After rewatching the LA 04 QF, I will say this is the best match between the two for sure. Sveta always made Elena look kinda stupid on court, but they were even enough here and both played at a high level. Their other matches are so bad though. Even though I respect Sveta her game is a real eyesore because of exactly what you mentioned. 30+ winners and 50+ errors, it's awful.

Also: Kuznetsova hit like 20 winners in the first set alone, and ended the match with 35-ish. I don't think I've ever seen Kuznetsova play better than in the first set here, and while I haven't rewatched the LA 04 QF yet, this is definitely Elena's best match against Sveta since then.
