Charley Pride Stories: We've Lost Another Legend

  • When I heard Charley Pride had passed away, I decided to share my thoughts and memories. I talked about his friendship with Willie Nelson and about some rough gigs in East Texas. I recorded this first thing in the morning, so I'm a bit groggy and in need of coffee. That'll happen sometimes. If that's my biggest problem today, I'll consider myself fortunate.

What's your favorite Charley Pride song? I'm partial to Is Anybody Going To San Antone, The Image Of Me, Just Between You And Me and Kiss An Angel Good Morning just to name a few. What's your favorite?

My dad had the live album on 8 track. At one time I knew the words to every song on it! So did he cause we would sing along to to it! It finally broke sometime in the middle of the 90s! I have it on vinyl now. Picked it up at a yard sale. My favorite song is probably Burgers and Fries. Just got a feeling in it.

Otis, thanks for posting this video. It means a lot to a life long Charlie Pride fan like myself. I grew up in the 80's just a few miles from where he lived down in Mesquite, Texas. Roll on Mississippi is one of my favorites if I had to choose one. Putting his live at Panther Hall, Ft. Worth, TX album on today for sure. Peace be with you.

Charley was one of the greatest country music singers, and such a gentleman.
Back in the 70s, my 8 year-old precocious niece flew as an unaccompanied minor from her home in Albuquerque to visit her grandparents, my parents, in Dallas. I'm only 8 years older than her, so I was still at home. We went to Love Field to pick her up, and we were shocked when this sweet little girl struts off that plane holding the hand of Charley Pride! My mom was a big fan, she was so stunned she didn't know what to say, so she said, "Well HELLO there, Charley Pride!" Everyone laughed, and Mr. Pride told Mom how she should be proud of her granddaughter and her singing talent. I just stood there, wide-eyed with my jaw on the floor!
My niece, Carrie, loved his song, "Kiss an Angel Good Morning" and knew every word. A flight attendant was impressed with Carrie's maturity, so she asked Charley if it would be okay if she came up front to 1st class where he was sitting, just to say hello and get an autograph. Of course he told her to bring Carrie up front. When she told him she loved singing his songs, he asked if she'd like to do a little duet! They sang "Kiss an Angel", the whole song, much to the delight of other passengers. She could sing like an angel even at that age.
When Charley was told that Carrie was flying alone, he said, "Not anymore!" and insisted she sit next to him for the rest of the flight! I don't know many celebrities who would be so sweet to an 8 year old fan. Walking off the plane holding her hand so he could meet her Grandma and aunt (me) was extra sweet.
Many years later, Carrie now lives in Germany and she's the lead singer for a rock band called "Farendale". I think Mr. Pride would be proud!

Thats a beautiful story and a great thing that Charley by no means had to do anything with the situation,Many would have sent her back to her seat cause she was bothering them but not Charley.I did get to say hi and thank you to him at a meet and greet before his concert.Although it rained the whole time and as it was outdoor show i got very wet but Charley made it all worth it.RIP Charley

That 'yodel' Charlie Pride had is the first thing I remember, from the 1st time I heard him sing Love Sick Blues! I remember he commented before he sang and said he, "didn't sing Hank songs quite like Hank but he did them 'his way"! Then he did"Love Sick Blues" and "Kawlijah" and as much as I love old Hank, there's nobody can hold a candle to Charlie Pride on these songs, not even Hank or Hank Jr. RIP Charlie Pride our Mississippi Troubadour!

Another example of his "intestinal fortitude" is the fact he was one of, if not the, first international musician to come and play in Belfast in the North of Ireland in the 1970s during some of the darkest days of The Troubles- that lead to him having a big fanbase here on all sides of the divide which was a very rare thing to have! Many other big names of all musical styles stayed well clear until well into the 1990s so to come and entertain folks at that time took nerve and something special.

I saw Charley live at the Arizona State Fair ,I was about 4-5 years old ,my first concert . I had already been fooling with guitar for about 2 years. I was hooked that day. I’ll never forget that day it’s plain as today. I also carry a scar on my right eye from that day. After leaving the concert we were moving thought the cattle yards . And I was swinging on the gates as we passed each one. The very last gate I went a swinging ,and jumped off , it went almost to the wall then sprang back and clocked me right in the face. I was out cold , and woke up in car bleeding like a stuck pig.
Anyhow. That show led me on a life path I haven’t left yet ....
RIP Charley see ya soon ...

I had seen Charley in concert several times since the 1980s.The last time he was at a small county fair in Maine. It was an outdoor event and raining but it was worth it to see him again and unfortunately my last time seeing him live.He did an amazing show for us fans as he always did.One lady in the crowd kept asking for his signature song and he teased her saying he forgot the words and didnt have time to do it.Of course he eventually sang it accompanying himself on guitar. The live album mentioned in the video by him is a great one that belongs with Cash at Folsom and San Quentin status. He truly loved his fans and we loved him back. Before the last concert I actually got to meet him shaking his hand and thanking him for his music that I had so much enjoyed for many years.RIP Charley and keep singing for the Angels.

I'm a pedal steel player in Vancouver, Canada. You articulated my feelings about Charlie, Willie, and the famous 1969 In-Person album. Every good steel player knows and loves that album because of Lloyd's brilliant playing. Charlie Pride, a black man playing Texas in 1969: now that is balls. What a singer, what a human being. Thank you, Otis, your words and stories really articulated the moment. Thank you so much.

One of the most remarkable talents in Country Music. When I first was introduced to Charlie Pride in the late 60's, it was my girlfriend's father who loved Charlie Pride and made me listen to him while we were at work. We worked at a car dealership and as it unfolded and other people gathered around there began a debate whether he was black or white. Sonny, my girlfriend's father had the album and it had Charlie Pride on the cover. He actually went home and got the album and brought it back to prove he was a black man. Before the day was over, even the owner of the dealership was listening to the album over the speaker system. "Is Anybody Going to San Antone" was that first song of his that I heard and "Love Sick Blues" along with "Kawlijah". I think His version of "Lovesick Blues" is my favorite.

Charlie Pride was a wonderful person, was fortunate to get to meet and visit with Charley about 10 years ago. He told me stories of his baseball playing days and these stories were priceless. Charlie headlined the Opry that night and when he took the stage, the crowd was electricfied and give him a standing ovation. I was cheering louder than anyone in the Opry House that night. My favorite Charlie Pride song is Crystal Chandeliers. Rest In Peace Charlie, you sir was a musical pioneer.

Met him many times here in Dallas. He was a really funny guy who was a total cut up. He was a member of a real Blue Collar country club I worked at and he loved to golf. He also loved his Tex Mex and always ate El Fenix in North Dallas. I worked there as well and had lots of interactions with him. Funny, kind, unassuming. Many people dont realize he was an amazing baseball player in his youth. I believe he also had a small ownership stake in the Texas Rangers. What a legend!

@@otisgibbs I know it's not about his music, but I just think knowing he was a really good guy to people and well liked here in Dallas is equally important. I think we assume when these legends arent touring anymore they are stagnant, or even bitter. This was a happy, active guy with lots of friends in a city that loved him.

Back in the late '60s my dad had a couple Charley Pride 8 tracks that he played in the car all the time. I've loved Charley's singing ever since. In one of Ralph Emory's books he tells a story of being backstage at some venue, maybe the Opry, with a bunch of country artists. Charley was a fairly new on the scene and having problems tuning his guitar. According to Emory Charley asked Lefty Frizzell to help and got the reply, "I don't tune guitars for ni****s". I gotta admit reading it brought a tear to my eye and I hope it isnt true, but it probably is. Respect to Charley Pride and anyone who has dealt with that racist bull***t in their lives and persevered. RIP to a brilliant singer and true trailblazer. ✌🇨🇦

My uncle saw him at a honky tonk in Arizona early in his career. The crowd didn’t know Charlie was black. When he stepped out onto the stage, dead silence. And then he began to sing-and everything was alright. A great and groundbreaking artist, even if he didn’t care to be thought of in that way . We will call him one of the best that ever lived, and leave it at that. I’m going to miss him.

I met Charley Pride once in a Baskin Robbins in July of 1986. It was a very hot Sunday afternoon and he had the family out in a Chrysler Fifth Avenue with the engine running and the a/c on. We were standing in line waiting to be served. I asked him if he was Mr. Pride by chance. He turned around and smiled big for me and shook my hand. I told him I grew up listening to his music and had a few of his albums on cassettes. He got ice cream for the whole family and told me it was nice talking to me when he left. He was the first star I had ever met. I was 19 years old at the time. He was a super nice guy and could sing the damn phone book - you would be entertained. He broke down lots of racial barriers. Charley will be missed.

I loved Charley Pride. When I was 12 or 13 years old playing guitar and singing, 2 of my favorite songs to sing were “Crystal Chandaliers” and “Kiss an Angel Good Morning”. You’re right about Charley being able to sing those Hank Williams songs so great too. Charley was a Country Music giant, one of the all time greats.

"Kiss An Angel Good Morning", great performance and tremendous song. I never got to see him in concert, though. When I was in college a friend from my dorm told me he'd "just met Charley Pride and McLean Stevenson upstairs" in our building. I thought it was some kind of joke, but he showed me their autographs. I ran up the stairs in time to see Charley Pride and McLean Stevenson walking across campus with some of the administration. I wanted to meet Charley Pride, but didn't want to go chasing after them and be a pest. So I stood there and watched, at least getting to see one of the best Country singers of all time walking by.

When I was ten, I had a school project. I forget the actual assignment, but what I did was draw 15 pictures of various Dallas Cowboys and Tom Landry. I taped them end to end so I had like a 4 yard strip of sketched and colored pictures. I cut a slit in two sides of a cardboard box, opened one end, and had two friends pulll the paper through the box as I shined a flashlight on the box. It was like a Flinstone slideshow. Anyway, it was a Charlie Pride song, Dallas Cowboys. I didn’t know he was black and didn’t care until someone told me I should. He was a fixture in these parts being a huge Ranger and Cowboys fan. I remember my Grammy playing a gospel record of his. He truly exuded kindness.
    Humble, gentle, and huge balls.
Every man should aspire to these qualities. Thanks again, Otis.

A few years ago I flew over the river and I found myself humming that song. There is a YT video of him standing on a riverboat singing that song, I listen to it often, it doesn't get any better than that. It's a nice thing it was named their state song. RIP Charley.

That was a great story on Charley's gig at the club and the subsequent meal at the restaurant.I only started listening to Charley Pride after I started to learning pedal steel. I needed material to make reference to so Charley's records became a natural source of pedal steel licks to learn. When I first heard his live rendition of Six Days on the Road, I was amazed at the pedal steel playing, so much so I decided there and then I had to learn pedal steel parts to it. Whenever I feel like singing a few bars of Six Days, it's always Charley's version for me.

I was about 7 yrs old living on a dirt road in Ontario, Canada, I had never seen a black person except on our Black and White TV. We had the Columbia record club, so once a week records came. I had already been playing guitar for a few years and I didn’t care about anything but music, so my life revolved around that new music showing up. I stood for a long time staring at the cover of “The Best of Charley Pride” . I had no feeling about it one way or the other, I just had never seen anything like it. I loved that record. It’s still in my top 10. Charley’s voice had a warmth like no other. And I love those songs, especially the Jack Clement tunes. I learned “Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger” right away…funny hearing a kid sing that…that record is like a school for how to make a great country record…for me the two ultimate Steel players are Lloyd Green and Pete Drake. Great story as always Otis.

Loved "Kaw Liga" "Got Leavin' on Her Mind", "Lovesick Blues" and his easy, fun banter with the audience (his story before "Just Between You and Me!" I married in 1971 and brought an 8 track of "Charley Pride's 10th album" on our honeymoon with us. My husband brought the Hair soundtrack and ended up listening to and loving Charley Pride especially "Is Anybody going to San Antone (that fiddle!') and of course it became one of my all time favorites along with Atlantic Coastal Line and "The Snakes Crawl at Night" Our first concert together was Charlie Pride with Gary Stewart and Ronnie Milsap at the Anaheim Convention Center. No reason for a juiced up audience-we were even crazier than the audience on the l"In Person" album. Like Don Willliams , Charley had a huge Native following at the concerts (the Lloyd Green factor?) and they really cheered him on as we all did, catching the enthusiasm. He put on a top notch show with master musicians and was so warm and friendly. RIP Charley♥

I was fortunate to catch one of his shows at the Horseshoe Casino in Tunica, MS a few years ago.. Even in his early 80's he put on a fantastic show. His voice was as rich as ever and he interacted with the audience and truly seemed to enjoy performing for everyone. He told stories and wasn't afraid to talk about his struggles throughout his life including a bout with mental illness. RIP to a humble man who seemingly never realized how many lives he touched through his songs.

His music will definitely take you back to the days when you and your friend enjoyed his music which will make today bittersweet.
Charley had raw talent, he was a professional, and a nice guy who seemed grateful for all that he had. He was a real class act in my book.
We have lost too many musicians recently. Sad to see him go. RIP.

When I was a kid, the music in our house was basically Country from my dad and 70's Pop/Rock from my mom (which probably explains why Punk held an attraction in my teens. But I digress). The country my dad listened to was a lot of Outlaw (Cash, Nelson, Jennings etc.) but he LOVED Charley Pride. As a child, my favourite song of his to sing along to was his cover of Me & Bobby McGee. I still stick it on every now and then when I need happy thoughts via nostalgia.

When I was in my early teens the first live album I owned that got me into country music was Roy Clark “Live from Kansas City”. I played that album over and over and that’s what made me love country music. About 30 years later I got to meet Roy Clark backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. I walked up and ask him to autograph my ticket. He was about to go on stage but he took the time to talk with me and give me an autograph and let me get a picture with him. I told him then the first country album I owned was his “Live from Kansas City” album and I played it till I wore it out. On a Charlie Pride documentary I just recently watched they showed Charlie and Willie meeting up again after many years and the first thing Charlie does is walk up to Willie and kiss him saying, “I’ve been waiting a long time to do that.” It was a moving scene and shows the incredible character of both men. They also talked about when Dolly Parton hugged Charlie on some show afterwards she received death threats. It boggles the mind how ridiculous the racism was and may still be, but thankfully we still have artists like Willie and Dolly who were unafraid of what people would think or say. It makes me proud of country music, and proud to own a large stack of Charlie Pride records. I also had no idea how much Cowboy Jack Clement went to bat for Charlie, producing his initial albums and using his clout to help Charlie. All this is a testament to the greatness of American life and culture, that we can all think and be different and it’s cool.

We have lost too many great talents especially just lately. I always loved San Antoine and Kiss an Angel. When you mention great live albums I think of Willie and Jerry Jeff of course. There was a show on ABC in the early 70's called In Concert with rock bands. In 75 they did a country show with Charley Pride as host. It was a great show with Dolly, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and Ronnie Milsap. Charley sang Louisiana Man and Kiss an Angel. Dolly did Coat of Many Colors and Jolene. Jerry sang Lord Mr. Ford and A Thing Called Love and Chet and Jerry played a couple duets. A great show. I'll have to pull that out and play it again.

Like Bill Withers- the color of skin never came into play in my mind..I didn't know for some time that Charley was a black man, I only knew I loved his voice, his spirit enveloping everything he did. It blew me away when I realized his lineage, mainly because my household was full of "old boys" and we weren't supposed to mix. My Dad stood a little taller to me when he said Charlie Pride did change his thinking a bit and would often have an 8 track favorite of Charlie's playing almost daily. In 1960 Charlie moved to Montana to work and play baseball for the smelter in East Helena and started playing his music in the local honky tonks. He was so smitten with the reception of the locals he phoned his wife, Rozene, and said to pack her bags because he had found home. After giving up on his professional baseball dream and being discovered playing in Montana by Nashville insiders, Charlie and his now larger family had to leave Montana, after 10 years, to become RCA's most successful artist after Elvis. Asked about his racial problems during this time he said "not one iota" and that he was accepted in Montana but they didn't want him to leave. 45 years later, I personally told him that he ever bit a Montanan as any of us. He knew it. We loved Charlie and always will...............................
