    He is talking about the 15in Air but puts up the specs for the new 13in air 00:02:09. The 15in air isn’t quite so light at 3.3lbs (not 2.7lbs like the 13in air). Definitely noticeably heavier than both the m1 and m2 13in airs. And darn close to the weight of the 14in Pro which is 3.5 lbs

      Again with the weight. Are you all a bunch of wimps? Want to talk about weight. The Compaq Portable that I had to take with me as part of my job was an early portable computer which was one of the first IBM PC compatible systems and weighed in at 28 lbs (13 kgs). Was not a laptop, and we called it luggable. Also came in at $2,995 US in 1982 (equivalent to $9,438 US in June 2023).

      @@TedWallace-k9j It is funny -- not only does it make shipping longer -- it's longer because it ships from China! I went through a similar experience with the China shipping when I got an iMac where I opted to get both the Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse. It takes a little longer, but it's worth it (to me anyway) to get what you really want. Apple seems to under promise and over deliver on shipping time though... my original delivery estimate was Fri. 6/23. The iMac also arrived days ahead of the original estimate.

  • @gnocchidokie
    @gnocchidokie ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I decided on the 15” air over the pro line for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the macbook pros with the newest M-series chips are total overkill for the vast majority of users. I’m not 3D rendering, I’m not processing hours and hours of 8k video. And even if I were, the MacBook Air can also do it, just not as blazingly fast. TH-camrs keep talking about the Air as if it’s completely incapable of compiling code or editing professional videos, which is simply not true. If that is your career, the Pro line is worth the investment for the speed bump on those tasks in a professional setting, otherwise the Air is the sweet spot of size, portability, power, and good looks. There are no other 15” laptops even close to this price range that share the same weight and power class as the Air, period. If you’re considering a new mac and you’re not a professional youtuber or specifically in a career that requires more, literally any M-series chipped model is going to make you very happy for, at minimum, half a decade.
    The other reason is the cost. TH-camrs keep comparing the 15” Air to the 14” Pro, when in reality they should be comparing it to the 16” pro. I want the bigger screen, so a 14” pro, while not a huge dealbreaker, is already a step down in that regard. And unless I’m literally in the middle of exporting a 1 hour long 8k video, I’m not going to notice the speed difference with any other task, but I certainly WILL notice when I quickly fill up that 512gb SSD, and I’ll certainly notice the extra two pounds of the pro when I’m walking around the city all day. I’m a writer, so while the higher refresh rate on the pros is very nice, I would only enjoy it while wiggling my mouse around. So considering all of that, for a similarly specced price comparison a 15” M2 Air with 16gb of ram and a 1TB SSD is a thousand dollars cheaper than a 16” pro with 16gb of ram and 1TB SSD. So I went with the Air, it was an easy choice to make.

    I have a 14” M1 Pro Macbook Pro 16/1TB. Last week a purchased the 15” Macbook Air 16/1TB to see if it would make a good replacement for me 14” MBP. For me, I wanted a larger monitor, and better battery life, without going to a heavier device. Truth be told, It turns out that even the M1 Pro is overkill for my needs, and aside from the quality of the monitor, it’s mainly FOMO that keeps me buying the higher-specked items. On the daily, I have about 10 concurrent apps running, about 30 browser tabs in Safari, and occasionally Parallels. I have not noticed any performance decline on the MBA vs the MBP, in fact, the faster single-core makes most tasks seem a bit quicker compared to the M1 Pro. The main plus is the larger display, and the extra 3-5 hours of battery life I am seeing on the MBA. Coincidently, I also find the MBA more comfortable to type on. So I have until next Wednesday to decide whether I am keeping the MBA and selling the MBP and I am conflicted. Although by all accounts, the MBA is exactly what I need, the FOMO is strong with me lol. I even customized the resolution on the 14” MBP to give me more real estate while maintaining a reasonable size, however, the 15” MBA “just feels right”. If I ever have a super-intensive task, I do run a Mac Studio at home that I can use.

    The problem is: 256GB is not enough storage. And 8GB is just not futureproof. So you either have to buy a lower spec than you want (to get value for money), or you pay through the nose.
    And by the time you upgrade, you then have to consider MacBook Pros… And no matter what purchase you decide upon, you’ll be unsatisfied… either because you overpaid or underspecced.

      256GB is actually enough storage for your average user’s programs and limited file storage. Bulk storage can be done with external SSD’s, which are cheaper but come with the annoyance of having to go fetch and plug in the SSD. 512GB just gives you the extra headroom to where you don’t need to actively monitor your storage, or if you’re installing stuff such as games or large programs such as Logic and Final Cut along with plugin suites.

    The niche for this computer is pretty big. There are lots of professionals who have historically used a MacBook Air because it is the least expensive way to get into a MacBook, has enough performance, and is a Mac. The 15” MBA is going to be perfect for people who wanted a larger display but don’t need the extra power of the pros laptops and don’t want to live with the downsides of those computers. I somewhat disagree with your thought's on the pricing of upgrades. With the student discount, the 16/512 version of this comes in right under $1600. What makes your argument somewhat valid though is the fact that apple starts the base pros with 16/512, which is what I think really hurts their pricing ladder strategy. How they should do it is start all base models at 16/512. You should be able to upgrade a certain model (like the air) and then think "okay I can get the pro for the same price, but I'll be giving up my upgrades". But the way they have it now; you're right for the average consumer, they may want to upgrade to 16/512, and at that point the pro is only $300 more, and you're still getting those upgraded specs + more. It almost seems like Apple doesn't want people to upgrade the MBA, just buy the MacBook Pro. The base model is great, I've been using it for almost a year, but it does bother me that something simple like just using safari watching TH-cam maxes out the memory and always uses swap. Apple makes it so that base air's have just enough memory to run macOS and nothing more, and that's quite bothersome to think of the longevity of the base models when in the coming years, Mac OS will only use more and more RAM.

    I decided to jump the gun and buy the MacBook Air 15 inch but with 24GB RAM and leave the 256GB SSD since I have an 5TB external hard drive and seems people worry too much on storage due to only 1 chip which I get but after seeing so many videos and TH-camrs doing “benchmarks” cause I don’t think I’ll see any difference in the SSD and I’m sure it can run very well with a lot of applications and especially having a gaming monitor so I don’t need a Pro MacBook, yes people will say I should have gone with the Pro but people underestimate how good the M2 Air is and it’s portability, I’d say if you love the M2 Air, go for It, just make sure to get more RAM whether it’s 16 or 24GB rather than storage

    I initially was enticed and placed an order for a 15 inch MacBook M2 16GB/1TB, but then quickly saw that it was almost at the cost of a 14 inch Pro M2 16GB/512GB... this quickly got me spiraling down the rabbit whole. I figured oh but my main reason in the beginning of all this was a bigger screen. I then decided to get a 16 inch Pro M2 16GB/1TB. Now I am second guessing myself because my initial 15 Air configuration is $1,000 dollar more than 16 Pro. Makes me consider returning it for the price alone. I've survived using my 12.9 iPad Pro for couple years now (old MacBook Air from college is 2012 and not really great to use). So now I'm stressed trying to decide if I want to keep the 16 Pro while its within the return window or downsize to a 14 Pro and save about $400 bucks or go back to my initial Air 15 and save $1,000 bucks! I just don't want to regret giving up that 120hz pro motion display and wasn't sure if the Air Display is decent for years to come.. Any advice?

    Yesterday I was working away from home and I took my 2021 MBP 16 and 2015 MBP 15. I wanted the screen space but there's a WiFi bug in Monterey that made it unusable so I did everything on the 16. I considered getting a 2023 MBP 15 or an external portable monitor. The 15 is not enough for my production stuff and I will take my 16 for that - but it would be nice to have a 15 for those times when I don't need the 16. It is a considerable luxury to have multiple Macs let alone multiple MacBooks. A portable external 17.3 inch 4k monitor starts around $700 so the base 15's cost is really the amount above the cost of a monitor for me. I'm cheap so I'm inclined not to buy one - if I see another 2015 iMac 27 for $200, I'd just get that and leave it at the other place where I work.

    I would like to buy it, cause I use some main apple products, but I don’t agree with you. At $1200.00 that ain’t cheap when missing so many standard ports from other alternatives that are just as good for less. The only thin missing on my PC is the apple logo on my laptop, but mine is:
    Very thin
    Has all the the needed ports
    Is 15.4
    Is a fully aluminum encasing
    Is 4k
    120 GHz
    It’s 360” tablet with a pen included
    Is touch screen
    Is face unlocking
    Comes with a leather pouch
    Incredible speakers that aren’t a gimmick
    SD Card slot
    HDMI and so much more.
    I mean, is not apple BUT value and capability specifically on the MacBook Air M2 just doesn’t offer that editing, powerhouse capabilities flat out unless you start adding memory capacity and you’d still end up short not having all other necessary standard included ports or anything else that some or most other offers bring. Btw mine is HP and I’m super happy, but because I have all else apple products, that’s the only reason I would consider it for the ecosystem and such for having iPhones, tablets, Watch, Apple TV and more. I'm not a content creator, but just having apps open for my usual business day (Mail, Word, Excel, Safari, Preview), will soon have my 8GB M2 Mac mini. No performance reduction, but that's eating into the life of your SSD. Not a problem if you change / upgrade frequently, but if you'd like to get a good long life out of the Mac, I'd say 16 GB RAM is the minimum nowadays. I have both a basic M1 MBA and an M1 Mac Studio. To be honest, there is little difference between them in the performance for the majority of my work, which is operating the finances of a small charity. Thus I live in office applications, which are doing almost nothing most of the time, so no need for great performance from the CPU or GPU. The RAM never seems to be stressed, and the 256 GB SSD is plenty big. Office documents are mostly under 200k and many are under 20k, so I reckon there's room for a million on my SSD. The slower 256GB SSD on the M2 Air is unlikely to make any difference - a 200k file is read or saved instantly. Fancy refresh rates, HDR and the like don't add anything to spreadsheets. Battery life on these apps is terrific. But even though I don't use all the power, these machines are streets ahead laptops from Intel era.
    Of course if I wanted to run a Max Hysteria TH-cam business it might be a different story, but since a great number of folks consume their content on phones I reckon a basic MBA would do pretty well producing fine video for those tiny screens.

A difference in a few ounces of weight one way or the other is barely detectable. I can't imagine making a buying decision because one laptop is a couple of inches lighter. I saw one review that compared this computer to a Windows computer that was lighter and the latter was so flimsy it wasn't funny. Apple has kept the weight down but it is solid. • @housepianist
      @housepianist ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many of those lighter laptops are essentially wrapped in a sheet of aluminium alloy. That is, all the hardware is encased in metal and plastic structures and then encased in formed sheets. While you can certainly make these sheets lighter than a section of milled aluminium, it's almost always flimsier and easier to flex than a milled structure. That's not to say sheets are bad. It's just that Apple chooses to create laptop cases as a single piece which really does give their MacBooks a higher quality and solidity to them.

    • @denniszenanywhere

      @@housepianist Yup, saw the video where Steve Jobs explains this single piece a decade ago when he introduced the Macbook Air. We all know about all the inferior casings of PC laptops. This is one reason I moved away from Lenovo years ago; even if it's carbon fiber (50% lighter), a piece of chipped away when I dropped it one time. Are we saying here, this is as far as we can go with strong yet light material that's affordable. There's one material that is really light but too expensive -- titanium. It's in many eyeglasses but it's a small part, so manufacturers are ok to use it. Now if Apple can find some way to produce laptops made of titanium and keep the price the same -- that'll be revolutionary.
