@@kenreckless9845 Spitfire XIV has a griffon 65 engine - high altitude rated model. That's what defines the low/high altitude Spitfire versions. This specific mark was built as a high alt fighter and for the most part, they were built with full wings. Mk XII was supposed to be the "low level griffon Spit" and XIIs were built with clipped tips from the start. Clipped wings on XIV appeared much later, at the end of the war in 1945, as a solution for some structural problems. While it improved low level speed a little, it was still mostly a high altitude fighter. The configuration present in game is actually a FR XIV - very late war fighter/recon subvariant, which aside from clipped wings has side windows and mounts for photocamera installation.
The first kill had no SA, and comms was the only reason he broke prior to being hit. I was the second. We were talking about RTB due to my fuel. Timing was everything cause after you hit me, my fuel ran out extinguishing the flames. Great flight o7
That was well done! I didn’t realize just how bad you smoked that first 109 until you showed the replays of the kill. Great to see someone flying this plane as it’s meant to be flown..
Great fighting! I always thought that the clipped wing spits were specialised low altitude operators. They could roll much faster and thereby got an advantage during dog fights. The trade off was that they suffered at altitude. Conversely, the high altitude specialists had a slightly increased wing span. Any truth to this?
impossible to turn and even to drop their version of spit XIV. I regret the 1946 sim, because even if the graphics had nothing to do with it, when the plane fell and/or stalled, it didn't do it in a ridiculous way like in this sim, spinning around in "corkscrews ". This "arcade" side of the game ruins everything! Bloody red patch 😉
This is the type of combat where XIV shows its true potential - it is a high altitude Spitfire first and foremost.
It's got clipped wings - a low altitude optimisation. Just saying...
