I'm so glad Spielberg didn't get the gig. No offense to him, his legacy of films is awe inspiring, but Columbus TRULY nailed these films in every sense of the term.
Chris Columbus was one of the best director’s for Harry Potter 1 and 2 . He really captured the story very well and I loved his work. I hope he does fantastic beats 3
@lentyski I don't think that's fair to say. The first two were kiddish because they WERE that way. Didn't you notice the second one became darker than the first? He didn't really have much to work with.
people will always remember him as the director who started it off and david yates as the one who finished it off :) both are different but still wonderful directors with their own touch of - excuse the pun - magic! unfortunately, alfonso cuóron and mike newell are forgotten in the mix since they only did 1 movie each, PoA and GoF respectively.
HUGE mistake changing the director. after chamber of secrets the 3rd movie was missing the magic and life that Columbus had given it. I wish theres a way he can re do the other movie
Oh please! The Colombus movies are weak. Bland style of filmmaking, terrible CGI. First movie has lots of mistakes. Prisoner Of Azkabhan showed it's true magic, which the sequels failed to do.
He did do a good job..but really can we keep all the movies "kiddish?" Personally..all the Harry Potter movies are wonderful...even though they don't follow all the way with the books..and the 3rd one was really nice.
@nmbr1cub i feel exactly the same way, it seems as soon as he stopped they introduced sex appeal and brought the filthy mind of the world into what was once a sanctuary of innocence, an ideal world.
I would say it's one of the best in the series. camera work is exceptional, beautiful long takes, nailed it with the dementors, the cinematography is gorgeous and john williams best work in the series.
I would rather blame it on too radical change in direction, tone and cinematography that caused some uneasiness toward people that grow up watching first two harry potter and caused the third film to make less money. I myself hate it when I first watched that movie in 2004, but then growing up I appreciate that movie much better. Harry potter cannot stay being kid oriented movies forever. It would be better had the change in direction and tone was done more slowly (like in Fast and Furious movies) so the film didn't feel disjointed.
How I wish we could actually have a look at the pilot versions of the Harry Potter movie scripts... just to get an idea of what each movie may have been like... T_T
I think that Cuaron should have directed Prisoner, but he shouldn’t have strayed as far as he did from the first two entries, then Columbus or someone else on the 4th, Cuaron on the last ones.

also i lost my intresting for harry potter when i saw the 3rd movie.when i saw the 4rd i wass sure they lost the magic think in theyr movies. Harry potter 3,4,5,6,7 cant even mach the 2 first ones and the those movies coming after the secont feeling that arent harry potter but just movies that you dont really care how it end like transformers 2 and stuff like that
*****I wish Mr. Columbus would read this***** I still wish he would do one more "Home Alone". This time with a little girl as the protagonist. With all the toys girls played with. A giant "Easy-Bake" oven(bad guy gets baked into a cake). amonst other stuff
I guess I'm giving an unpopular opinion because the third film is my favorite. A lot of people are saying that after the first two, it "lost the magic" but I think that the director of the third movie, Alfonso Cuaron, did a great job of just making the magic more subtle. Every time magic was used in the first two movies, it was a huge showing with dramatic music in the background and everyone getting impressed and everything, which worked for the earlier movies because the audience needed an introduction to the concept. However, by the third movie, we were already accustomed to the magic and it didn't need all the fanfare. I feel that Cuaron did a great job of having magic just sort of be a part of life at that point.

Hardly. The first two movies could've been way better if Terry Gilliam directed them. With the movies we got, they're not good at all.
I didn't know that the man who discovered America in 1492 also directed the Harry Potter films.

+Lourd Sean Villarruz Agreed
Best comment ever, thanks
Agree. The first 2 movies are the best. Prisoner of Azkaban is very overrated, although beautifully shot.

I hope he directs fantastic beats he would be absolutely fantastic doing wizarding worlds again .

This needs 1 million likes!
Always loved the first 2. The third disappointed me. unknown director and it showed to be the worst grossing
+Busher50 The director of the third was Alfonso Cuaron. It annoyed me so much how he left huge chunks of the book out and scrambled the timeline too.

The movies didn't get bad until the fourth or fifth ones.

The films lost the magic after the first two
True. The later directors took too many liberties with the source material. Columbus stayed true to it.
