    3 Things to add. Billies mountain came down at the end of two years of back to back hundred year snowfalls. My father in law, Roy was born there. Lastly my grandfather, Gus Soutas, was the line foremen for the railroad when they built the yard up there. We still have a lot of his tools. Last year, after the fires that went though the area the year before, there was a massive flash flood. Three ranches up the canyon before the bend took a lot of damage. My friend has been digging out the mud for over a year now. Most peopl have no idea that they are passing though Thistle, thank you for giving it the respect it deserves.

    I used to live in Eastern Utah and can vividly remember Thistle as a quaint little town, that old school house was intact, as well as most of the dwellings near the creek. I also remember the big mud slide in 1983 that blocked the highway in Spanish Fork Canyon as well as the streams that eventually flooded all of Thistle. It was such a cute little semi-ghost town back then. I used to drive through Thistle many times going back home in Emery County if I wanted a change of scenery, especially during the Autumn, all the old trees changing. Plus T
    one could finally see homes usually hidden by brush and trees. It was sad to watch it drown only to be drained revealing the destruction 😪

    My great grandma grew up in thistle and went to that school. We used to visit with her every year.

    I remember passing by Thistle every weekend from 1987-1991. Most of the town was underwater. It has since dried up significantly in the past 30 years. I also remember watching on the local news in 1983 about the landslide that happened. Its a sad and erie end to a little town.

      Wow, I didn't realize the water stayed that long.

    Wow, very cool how some of the houses and stuff are still standing in water over 40 years later

    Very cool, thank you for posting! I’ve been interested in Thistle since driving by during a family road trip when I was younger. I was four years old during that flood, and I remember the water in our yard (in Provo at the time) was up to my knees!

      I was 4 also and lived in Provo too! 😊 I remember the sandbag river and the wooden bridges they built to cross to the other side. Hopefully we don't have a repeat in '23, we have surpassed the '83 snow pack levels!

    I was there when the slide started. An old railroad worker said the mountain had been moving for 40 years that he knew of.

    Thanks for telling us about this ghost town! Question - how long did this take to film? I'm planning a day trip to Thistle for a video project, and I like the gray-ish lighting you had here, but if it's too cold to stay out for long I might need to go during the summer.

    • @BarlowJacob

      Not very long, maybe 10-20 minutes?

    we drove through Thistle also when we lived in Colorado and one day, I wanted to check it out on the way home to Colorado from a trip to Utah (where we are from and now live again), and saw the houses under water but did not travel any farther down the road.

    I drove past here today! I've always wondered what that house submerged by the water was. I didn't realize a whole town had inhabited that area. Thanks for the video and the information! So that railroad that goes through the canyon, was that the one that the town used all the time? Or was that a newly built train track later?

    • @BarlowJacob
      @BarlowJacob  ปีที่แล้ว

      They had to reroute the tracks
