This discussion does not cover the range of salaries. The focus on train drivers and not ticketing, cleaners, food service staff misses out large proportion of workers. How about a ban, or making it a criminal offence for bosses refusing to engage with unions or worse, recognising certain unions?
Absolutely ridiculous idea. Race to the bottom of the right here at work. They hate ordinary working people having decent pay and conditions. But the bosses still get the big salaries and bonuses.
Ask the GOOD MORNING BRITAIN, presenters work for £12 an hour, they wont work for no less a grand an hour. These journalists, tv. Presenters are seriously overpaid..
@jdizzle1779 nurses can strike and have done. The question shouldn't be, these people can't strike so nobody else should. People should be treated fairly enough so there's no need to strike, but here we are in 2025, and it's still happening
So, we are talking about banning people employed by a private company from striking? Dangerous talk. ... Its barely a public service anymore, stop protecting corporations. Rail is private, deal with the consequences.... what next? Banning supermarket workers? Also, stop subsidising the private train companies, let them fold, let them fail. Who cares about them?
The argument comparing CEO salaries could be done in any field. Then we should all strike and nobody would need the trains to go to work because the CEOs make much more than we do. Sad that this was the only argument this guy brought to the table
Getting paid 1.8 million for failure is sickening if he was running thriving company good for him but being bad at your job and getting 1.8 million from my taxes that's robbery
@@himkf21 What this very disingenuous journalist fails to mention is that this is the pay of the CEO of firstgroup and not the pay for the Avanti managing director, which is significantly lower. Avanti is just a small part of Firstgroup, which runs many profitable and successful public transport services in the UK and abroad. So this so called journalist should really not complain about that.
Oh wait, these aren't the workers but people who manage the workers on the railways, nationalise the railways and have the profits put back into the country
These are Private sector workers and not public servants so nothing to do with Government. If the privatised Rail industry cannot run itself then let somebody who can
I would genuinely be interested to know, just how many people in that studio are earning £300 per day. I would guess that quite a few are, and some much more.
72,000 a year will not be many of the crew behind the camera. That’s why he said everyone on the desk are earning more. £80,000 plus is the top 20% of earners. Train drivers don’t all earn that they just want that for 1 day they are called in when it was a day off
I think, it’s funny how the second anybody hears Railway they jump to the conclusion of Train Drivers being paid well. The Railway is a complex system, with hundreds of people fulfilling various different roles paid at various different levels. Unions are there to ensure all workers are paid what they are worth whilst ensuring they have the best T&C possible. This isn’t a race to the bottom just because you aren’t paid as much as rail staff doesn’t mean they salary’s should be brought down everyone’s salary should go up
Well, I'm afraid the truth is that train drivers are paid incredibly well. For driving a train in NL, Belgium, Germany or France, you'd make roughly half of what UK train drivers make.
I agree the railway workers should lose the right to strike. There is no problem with striking to get better conditions and pay, this is where the weekends come from, however the train workers have misused their power to strike in the last 3-4 years. They need to decide whether they are publicly owned or privately owned, if private the taxpayer should not be subsidising them. The irony is the train drivers and train managers get paid more than the majority of passengers that use the service and are fleeced in ticket fares for a worse service year on year. Also don’t like that they are striking to reject technology in the job and to make sure that no one gets laid off even though a job that currently takes 10 people to do could actually take 5 with technology assisting, be more efficient for the workers and better for the most important stakeholders, the passengers that use the service. In general not specific to railway workers, people need to be continuously be upskilling, you can’t work a low skilled job on low money and expect to bully your way to more money or have the same job for 40-50 years and retire on a solid pension, the world has changed. You can’t either change with it or get left behind.

What is this question? We're now debating whether employees should have basic workers' rights removed? Unbelievable
Employees*
Nurses and police can't strike. Where is the push for them to have the same rights
@jdizzle1779 Nurses can strike
@@cgh08443 my mistake. Wife is a nurse and she said they can't but saying that she's only been doing in 2 years

The economy cares about them, given the railway provides a net benefit
No. Next question

No it couldn't, because that would mean that any field and company is failing at the moment, which isn't the case.

No, train managers are essentially guards
Just looking at that ex tory you know he looks down on the workers, he is a stereotype talking faff. He helped drive the country into the ground.

Told to use cars less, use public transport. They already get paid enough. Nurses dont get paid rest days and work a lot more hours
100% agree
And nurses can't strike
Nurses can and have struck they have also worked to rule
@Kellyr555 then why aren't politicians being held to account for keeping Nursing wages down?
Who gets paid enough?
At the end of the day, you know the terms and pay of the job when you take it! No one should be able strike.

Pay people properly, its not difficult

We need to stop comparing CEO pay to the regular worker when trying to make a point.
When the CEO is getting paid that much for a service which is absolutely terrible it needs to be brought up every time

Call me old fashioned but someone who drives something that weighs 100s of tonnes should be well paid.

We aren’t necessarily talking about train drivers though

Yes is the simple fact
An ill informed opinion isn't a fact
Give more money to drives
They get paid enough already!
No they don’t
Who does?
If the workers want fairness leave Avanti and go be an agency worker with no company benefits but you get paid more in salary
There aren't any agency staff for safety critical roles in the railway, and nor should there be. Daft idea

They have just got a 10k, pay rises... And Labour didn't give them any rules to go with the 10 k pay rises...
as these are Private industry staff the government doesn't pay them
