  • I decided to improve my workmate for an upcoming job at site and at the same time add some features to it. It turned out really well and I have got a ton of use from this little fella!
    Watch to the end to see me explain all the features it holds!

    The top of my trusty workmate isn’t broken but you may have inspired me to fix it anyways. I’ve always thought it was too low and adding the tool storage and increasing the top size would be super useful!

    I ididn't think that model was worth rescue but you did some big improvements to it.

    My workmate is by far my most useful extra set of hands, ever! As I have a small garage and an MFT style work surface is a must - I’m definitely going to use your “hack” awesome!!

    I like this. Lots of potential. Scrap of plywood across the orange braces to add a bag of something on top to increase stability. Bag of dirt, gravel what have you? Tip the bag out when you’re done, repeat as needed.
    Clamp a long table on top with a centre support between the clamps to steady, or make a second one and clamp between as a patio table suitable for large gatherings. Possibilities are endless. I was going to mod my mid 70’s Workmate with wheels but raising the jaws your way is a very appealing option.
    Thanks for the idea.

    Looks like a Harbor Freight Clamping Workbench... I recently bought one to keep in my detached garage for quick jobs, even though I have an actual Black & Decker 79-041 Workmate that I keep in my basement workshop... I just don't like carrying up the steps and 200 feet to my other garage for quick jobs.
    Really like your custom top... the weakest point of that HF clamping workbench is the front metal plate behind the adjustment handles... after a couple of uses, I noticed the left handle was rubbing on the wood top... the thin metal front plate became distorted inward causing the handle to be drawn inward.
    I'm going to remove the handles as soon as I get a proper roll pin punch, and insert a wide metal washer over the screw bar to stiffen the front plates.
    On a side note, I just bought a nice older (1977) B&D 79-001 Type 2 workmate from Craig's List for $20... looking forward to doing some modifications to it... much better built than the HF "workmate".

    Good idea and useful for sure. Sadly, and I know you were making due with what you had and recycling used up equipment to give it new life, but that idea deserves a sound base and not flimsy legs. I may have to do that using a newer version of Black and Deckers' Workmate base. It would be larger, more stable, extremely useful compared to the stock table that comes with them. Great idea. Thank you.

    • @MadebyMagnus

    Can you tell me more information about the clamps with the dogs that fit into the holes in the workmate top that you used to hold the wooden bowl ?

    • @MadebyMagnus
      @MadebyMagnus  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're a part of a Festool clamping kit for their MFT-table. I'm not sure if the kit is still available, but the clamps are for sure.

  • @CrudeButEfficient

    I have two Workmates that can use new tops. What did you set the top of the table height to be?

    • @MadebyMagnus
      @MadebyMagnus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The new top is 10 cm high and the top surface is 80 cm above the floor. Just check that your drill will fit in between if you want that function. Good luck with the build!
