I remember my dad having to polish his boots for his Woodlands back in the day... felt like it took him hours to do it every few weeks, but then again I was a kid, so an hour felt like hours ;p . He retired just a few months shy of 40 years (mandatory retirement age) as an E-8 -- very proud of my old man :) .

As a former Captain in the Army, when I was a 1st lt in Germany I had a Staff Sergant who, honestly, I could not get through inspections without him. He always found the problems if there were any and I almost had a perfect inspection record thanks to him.
A great NCO will help you soo much as an officer!
The US Army should have never gotten rid of shoe shining in basic training all those years ago. Its an art that if you don't know what you're doing then it can be daunting.
We should go back to bdu’s with the black leather boots. When bdu’s are starched, and boots are shined, they look really sharp. I however came in 2014 so we had those hideous acu’s with the ucp pattern. So gross compared to bdu and dcu

We were too busy fighting in wars to worry about shiny boots 🤷🏻♂️
I'm glad my inspections in the Navy weren't as intense as those were looking. Chief never brought out the ruler and just eyeballed it. I'm liking the new uniforms but don't miss spit shining!
Yeah my leaders have always brought out the roller during inspections. But this unit was very serious about it and I’m glad.
I just bought the agsu for flight school graduation. I didn't know the shoes had to be shined...
I have to look in the regulation to see if it’s mandatory. But shoes polished/ spit shinned always look better.
I personally think the shoes look better unshined for the agsu because its not a flashy uniform.
Just retired with 21 years and bought the AGSU because it was very nice. I opted for Allen Edmonds Leeds in shell cordovan for shoes. If going with calf (leather) Cigar is the color match. The issue shoes are junk construction. Also, please put some edge dressing on those soles LT!

Try a few months shy of being deployed to OIF I and your incoming 1SG with 18 years in service has never been deployed, nor has ever been to the field.
And she's been assigned to a Forward Support Battalion with only MEDDAC and MEPS experience. (lol)

Nice, thanks for keeping me up on the newest uniforms of the Army. I served in the 60s, when it was the "greens" uniform in style.
Of course :) I love the new uniforms, my cousins had the uniforms from the 60s.

How did you get to be an officer if you don't know how to spit shine your shoes? You should have learned that in ROTC or OCS!
We didn’t do that in ROTC. That’s why I learned from my 1SG :).

When I saw the US Army going back to the OLD WW2 uniforms, I sighed sadly 😥 ... for today's new soldiers. Their officers... their "Top Brass" ...has obviously lost all imagination.
Might as well put F. Scott Fitzgerald in as Chief of Strategy... or is the Chief of Staff in charge of that???

Get rid of the Berets please and give back the old covers nobody wants the Berets Honestly. You get alot more enlistments if you stick to the old Class A Uniforms and covers how much is it going to take where not French or British Soldiers so correct the lame berets back to the old faithfull busdriver covers unless your fine with all the upcoming Soldiers to Join the Marines. Im serious men will eat crow and ask for seconds over there Uniforms Berets are making your men go else where. Onward id rather be called a Soldier than otherwise so would .any others fix the simple Uniform cover issue and see Results .

Uniform inspection INSTEAD of PT? Why not Inspection AFTER PT? Also, look at DA PAM 670-1. You CAN shift your wings, but the outside of the wings Should be lined up with the outside left edge of your ribbons, NOT centered on the outside left edge of your ribbons..

I think that they should check there soldiers records and make sure there wearing all there awards and time in service and combat strips they didn't do it when I was in and got confused or didn't know I was suppose to have something but I went from the navy to the army

as a former us marine corps vet , i can only say that it is the only good uniform that the us army ever had and it would be nice if they brought back the late 50's and very early 60's khaki dress that the us army and the USMC both had
The army had the khaki dress uniform in world war 2 I own a uniform dated 1944 an army air corp uniform.
The navy had them I know in world war 2 I know the navy had them also in the late 2000’s early 2010’s.
I think the army air corp officer had also a white uniform but it’s rare I think.
DO NOT EVER "SPIT" (SHINE) ON YOUR SHOES! NOT ONLY IS IT DISGUSTING BUT RUINS THE LEATHER. USE DISTILLED WATER AFTER FIRST CLEANING THEM WITH SADDLE SOAP.
Distilled water, and nylon stockings. Have a pair of nylons since you can get into the creases. Also; the nylon is abrasive enough to give it a good shine.
The only thing I wish the uniform had that it doesn’t is a brown belt with a golden buckle to match the shoes.

Question LT, might be a dumb one but I can't find any info since the AGSUs are new, if you have to shine the shoes, do you have to shine up the brim on the service cap? I bought one because I think it looks way better than the garrison cap and I'm a little confused. Thanks!

It’s always great to hear from other cultures :). And that’s true, the way I see it if war breaks out they won’t care if I cuss, they will care if I bring back home my troops :)

1lt are the pinks optional?
As of right now they are optional, but I believe the official wear in date is 2028. Where if you’re in the army that is when you need to have them by and ready to wear.

First thing I did when getting to my first duty station in 1990 was buy two pairs of shoes. One patent leather (AKA plastic) dress shoes, the other was Corcoran jump boots.

Do new recruits in the Army get the Army greens uniform or do they get to choose from the two?
It depends on where you are going, I went to Fort Sill and I got mine issued, just missing a one part, long sleeve shirt.
And also they don't issue ASUs(blues) now. There are some of my buddies in AIT did not get AGSUs(pinks and greens).
I also got my ASUs from the CIF of my unit because I volunteered for Honor Guard.
They get the Greens issued but you can purchase the Dress Blues as an optional uniform for ceremonies and formal events.
Helping each other with something like this encourages helping each other with life.
Spit shine? OH HELL NO, take it off post to them Korean places that does it.

Hey Suyesh, the better is still alive in the army. But not as alive as it use to be. The Army rangers wear berets, Special forces, SFAB units, ABN units, and other units do for ceremonial events etc.
When you buy the agsus has an enlisted, are they a different color has the officers?
They are the same color, their is a few different things though. The enlisted jackets have ranks sewed on while the officers have pin on ranks.

Well designed uniform - but far too much 'bling'. The formation 'patch 'is far too large. Examine the uniform of a British, Australian or German soldier of comparative service and there will be far less frippery on his/her uniform.

How would you promote enlisted soldier that is wearing AGSU? Since there is no pin on ranks like officers for enlisted side on the AGSU.
You'd promote them in the OCP/ACU, then they'd go to the cleaners and get them sowed on.
Every era pays homage to their current troops, why in Gods name would the US Army go back to WW2 uniform. The Army should have adopted a new futuristic look for the modern era.
