I have never liked those surface mount micro usb connectors, nowhere near enough mechanical strength for the job they need to do on larger, heavier devices. As you say the nickel plate is a right bugger to solder to as well.
No problems understanding you by the way (as a Brit the SA accent just sounds like a drunken Aussie to me - or perhaps it's the other way around lol) .
