Is Belgium about to break apart?

- The potential division of Belgium is not a new concept, as the country is deeply divided both linguistically and economically. The northern part of the country, Flanders, is predominantly Dutch-speaking, while the southern part, Wallonia, is predominantly French-speaking. There are also two German-speaking communities in the eastern part of the country. This linguistic divide is further complicated by an economic divide, as Flanders is much wealthier than Wallonia, with a GDP per capita nearly twice as high. This is due to Flanders' strong technology industry, while Wallonia's traditional coal and steel industry is in decline.
The Belgian government in Brussels is aware of the problem and has tried to take a neutral position, but with limited success. Many solutions have been proposed, including the division of Belgium into two new independent states: Northern Belgium and Southern Belgium. Alternatively, it was suggested that the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium become part of the Netherlands and the French-speaking part become part of France.
Everyone is gangsta till the German-speaking part decides to annex itself and all of Belgium

Secret ending: Luxembourg gets the German part, France the French and the Netherlands the Dutch.
Best ending: Belgium re-annexes Luxembourg, Limburg, North-Brabant and Calais.
As a Belgian I laughed at this. If you for a moment think our circus politics will make something happen in such a grand scale, the pope will fly.
Have you heard of a thing called a plane?
So i see that also Belgium, and not only Italy (my country) has big political and economical problems between the northern (i live here) and southern part of the country... also in Italy, north is wealthier than south, and there are so many differences, but no one of our useless politicians have proposed in DECADES a fucking solution to this inequality, this is so frustrating
are you from Wallonia or Flanders?
@@michelesoldi85terestingly enough, both the UK and the US have had a serious North/South cultural-economic-political divides on the past. The US divide is close to it's historic North/South, in that the former slave states plus a few others are still authoritarian and socially conservative. It's almost a perfect match up in terms of the former slave states rolling back abortion access and LGBT rights. Unlike normal places where stuff is divided by language or industry, our country is divided by those who want the government in our Dr offices and bedrooms, and those who don't.
@@rickwrites2612 yeah, the historical division in US is also very interesting, there is so many cultural differences also correlated to the big civil war of 19th century... but also US is a federal state, and every US state has a good amount of self-determination in the law system. In italy is similar from some points of view (we're not a federal state, sadly), but the cultural differences have so ancient origins, cause until 1861 Italy was divided in a big number of small states, that were existing for centuries! That's why the differences between north and south of italy are so big, we're an agglomerate of small states with settled laws and culture that is semi-impossible to combine
Belgium isn't going to break up. They can't agree to do anything, including that.
To be fair, out of everything, I'd say splitting up your country is one of the most difficult things to agree on

As a Belgian I can confirm we're unhappy with the current state but we hate all the alternatives even more
I don't see see anything different if Flanders would get independent. We wouldn't lose any wealth because it's already the wealthiest part of the country. Many laws are already at a state level, so it's just choosing if we keep all the federal laws and constitution or see what we change.
Wealthier I don't think we'll get because as soon as Flanders can use the money that's being wasted in Wallonia, the Flemish government probably just finds another way and excuse when all that money won't be used for anything special. They only can't blame it on Wallonia anymore, but the people won't see a single eurocent of it.
@@dennisengelen2517I think you forgot the part of who of Belgium invested the money into the industry that makes the flanders wealth :)
(Need to add about money being wasted in Wallonia, 1st Flanders makes less of the Pib of Belgium than Wallonia(90 vs 115B), second they have a lot more gvt spendings than Wallonia(ratio of19 to 15, more or less the same if you take it with language spendings), check your facts before talking
If flanders would join the netherlands it would be a massive economic power house with 2 main harbours for europe, Antwerp and Rotterdam
@@L-21 We understand this very well. Antwerp, Bruges and Amsterdam created the wealth and invented the modern world as we know it. Not only Bruges and Antwerp. Also Amsterdam bc most of Antwerp fled to Amsterdam when the Spanish conquered Antwerp and contributed to the Dutch golden age. We have always been successful. We invented Tomorrowland as cooperation between Flanders and the Netherlands. Our music shaped Europe many times. Our agriculture and industrial innovation. We are the s***
Every other alternative is better. Us, Flanders are creating a socialist, communist dictatorship by giving Wallonia billions and have their politicians sell them a fantasy with our money. That's what's keeping them down. If we love them, we must leave them. Fast.
If I had a euro for every time I was told Belgium was about to break apart I could have paid off our national debt by now.
ok, but at least in absolute numbers polls now place VB as the nr1 party and PTB/PVDA as the nr 2 followed by PS and NVA both at 20% of the national polls
offcourse the vote of a fleming is currently worth less than the vote of a walloon, which offcourse contributes to the division so the leading flemish parties are underrepresented
(all this assuming that politico did not account for the crazy electoral system of Belgium, then again these polls would have been based on polls made by Belgian pollsters so it may allready be adjusted)
no matter the case people are allready angry about the continued exclusion of VB and in an effort to hold up the guise of it being fair PVDA/PTB ( which is crazy given that only the latter still maintains open and active ties to extremist regimes and groups)
(no cordon sanitaire should exist at all though, maintaining one is objectively a repressive and anti democratic conduct)
and lastly, if you want Belgium to survive, which I have come to edge towards it's very simple
money transfers must be made low interest loans requiring a plan to be presented for how the money is to be spent.
pro Belgian activists should focus their attention on Wallonia which does not even make Dutch a mandatory and primary course in Highschool, whilst Flanders does do so for French. Walloon media should stop actively promoting anti Flemish rhetoric, Flemish media does not do so towards Wallonia
It's as easy as using common sense and putting in some effort, but the mere suggestion of enacting such policies would offcourse hurt walloon parties in the polls,
@@istoppedcaring6209Dude, Flemmings are more than Walloons, they literally have a bigger voice than us.
The only thing stopping Vlams-Belang (The fascist one, btw) in the government is the "coalition must represent 51% of voters" and Wallonia's sanitary cords against fascism (which, I saw people talking about living in a commune where VB was directing and all I remember from those is "fear")
(the extreme left (communist) fail by itself so they're no need for them)
Which, by the way, my reaction to flemmish fascist is "Hope you'll stay in Flanders and drown when the sea level rise".

I am from belgium and I study political science here. I have a few issues with this video. This discussion in belgium is also 99% of the time about Flanders and Wallonia so I will focus on that:
1. In the past Wallonia had the stronger economy and that didn't lead to the breakup of belgium so why would it now.
2. I have no idea where you got those "solutions" from. The solutions in this video are not the ones being discussed. There is an ongoing discussion abt how much power the regions of belgium should hold with one party, Vlaams Belang, wanting flemish indepedence.
3. Brussels is a crucial part of this discussion. Both sides claim this as part of their region and it is economicaly one of the best regions in Belgium. Nobody wants to lose Brussels. I think that as long that is the case, Belgium won't split.
Or just start migrating there and push the French speaking people out. Seems to work for some other people in some far away desert country i dare not name. We’ll be generous, we’ll only take Brussels, they can keep the rest. 😅 (i’m not being serious of course)
I agree. Belgium is certainly not the most unified country in the world, but the situation was much worse in the past. I believe around the mid 20th Century there was major violence between the two sides due to economic disparities, but even then Belgium still stands.
Not only Vlaams Belang want a independence Flanders, more and more other politic parties want that... Belgium will split in the future!

As a Belgian I can confirm a problem exists but it is mostly at the political level and or educational level . There is a large unknown on both sides of the linguistic border most or many do not know much that’s happening in the other side of the linguistic border . Concerning the idea of an alliance with the Netherlands for the Dutch speaking part of Belgium we did not kick the Dutch out of Belgium in 1830 to go running back to them any time we are Belgian Dutch speakers that’s where any common point ends the same for Walloon speaking French . When it comes to being one country and one people under the same flag the Belgians have shown they can work together . During the heavy flooding a few years ago the Dutch speakers in Belgium came to the rescue of their French speaking brothers and sisters . We should aim for a fully devolved country and anyway of you think the problem of Jerusalem is impossible to solve wait until you start trying to solve the Brussels issue should Belgium ever be split in two countries .

Man screw that idea, stop diving nations so their neighbors can have more land and ppl. I know Belgium ppl have some internal issues but for such a developed and rich nation (on the global and European scale) I bet they can work something out if they really want to. And I say that’s the better option as Belgium has a lot of rich history and culture, and I don’t want to see the Dutch or French just take it and appropriate it
That’s it guys, we can’t have Belgian chocolate anymore
there's a reason we dutch people call it Zuid-Nederland
British making Belgium to annoy the french
Belgium breaking apart
British:💀
It wasn't just to annoy the french, it was also to prevent Germany and france from having a shared border which in 18th and 19th century Europe was a bad one
yes the politicians would like to cut Belgium in two, but not the people. " Unity is strength "
Flanders becomes The Netherlands
Wallonia becomes France
The German speaking areas become Germany and Brussels becomes a UK overseas territory lol
The two biggest political party's, in terms of votes, in Belgium are the party's who want Flanders to split off.
@@lightfootpathfinder8218It would be funny to see Wallonia annex France and Flanders annex the Netherlands

Lol we never gonna break apart
Yes
You already did though lol
It's ironically similar to how they broke away from the netherlands
That revolution was based done because the Dutch king made Protestant the main religion and they thought he was neglecting Belgium and using the funding for the north, but fun fact, the spending went to his own pockets
Pls don’t break apart my lovely country

In December 2006, RTBF (the French language radio and television broadcaster in Belgium) broadcasted some sort of hoax in place of their usual news program, where they basically said "Flanders has gained independence, mate". It got a lot of people worried, actually, even after they decided to add a "This is fiction" tagline 30 minutes in. The program was called Bye Bye Belgium, and uh... let's just say it was... controversial, to say the least. I've never seen the thing myself because I'm Moroccan, but this is still something that kinda needs to be mentioned. I personally think that Belgium without Flanders feels wrong.
Are you Belgian or Moroccan ?
@@Great_Wizard_ I said I was Moroccan in the comment, mate.

Met a Belgian guy about 15 years ago and asked a similar question about being French or Dutch or feeling unified.
About each he said "everything is just fine" which really made me feel it wasn't.
Instead of more divisions in Europe it would be nice to see it absorbed by the surrounding countries in which the people most identify.
Balkanization is always preferable. Breaking apart doesn't cause wars. It's the people preventing the breakup who cause the fighting.
Flanders is always welcome by the dutch. But they have to accept that we will make a little fun of their accent.

Always has been.
In other news: Betelgeuse is just about to go supernova.
So, what about Brussels?
pop is 80% french 20% Netherlands so Walloon logically
But the far right will want to claim it as without their « we are richer » doesn’t stand, Flanders makes less money than Wallonia while having higher gvt spendings, without counting Brussels in the calculation they are fcked lol

@@mfc4987jamais vous aurez un pouce de notre pays.
Our politics are so complicated that by the time we would decide on a solution people will already think completely different and they'll have to come up with another plan for the next decades
Also unification with other countries is really not on the table cuz if there's anything that unifies belgians it's our dislike of our Dutch and French speaking neighbours
It would also ruin our national football team and that's the thing people feel the most patriotic about
Modern Europe when slightest of the problem occurs-
Let's divide
I knew that Flanders was richer but I didn't know the difference was that big. Wow!
Wow! Can you tell us how you made the maps for this vid. You gained a subscriber for that detailed map
It's wild to me that many people would rather fracture their nation than to fix it.
Eh, same thing in South Africa. The Western Cape wants to break away from the rest of the country because it's disproportionately more developed than the rest of the country. (Largely due to a lack of corruption that's wrecking the rest of the country.)
Can’t really fix an ethnic divide
It is a wonder anything happens politically in Belgium at all
I think Limburg should just form it’s own country, then I’ll die in peace
echt eh
I’m from belgium, it’s not the inhabitants hating each other it’s the government that is split up in 3 parts Flanders’s Wallonia and Brussels if they work together we could be one country but they are to naive😢
Honestly, I hope Luxembourg gets Belgian land of the same name. It just feels right.
Your economy’s gonna drop mate
@@julienmars9149 I know
You forgot to mention the Walloons are mad because historically they used to be the rich, dominant, governing part. Then in the 60s things turned around.
North and South Belgium? That would be amazing!North Belgium will have the same flag as Belgium and South Belgium will have it’s state flag!
Well , The original flag of Belgium used to be horizontal stripes just like the Dutch flagg.. the modern Belgian flag has vertical stripes like the flag of France.. So , I would use the first Belgian flag for Flanders (North-Belgium) and the modern Belgian flag for wallonia (South Belgium) , kinda like a reminder of their background.
@@ArienvanRijswijckde walen zijn niet frans. De walen haten de frans et de frankrijk. Frankrijk dat is een dom land.
I'm pretty sure the Netherlands would not even want to incorporate Flanders given the immense cost it would be to bring the infrastructure up to Dutch standards.
Don’t think you keep up with NL politics at all maat. NL would fucking kill to have ANY more land. If NL was the size of the German, French, Polish superstates, NL would be neck and neck with UK right now.
Its really only the government who would think of doing that and they wouldn’t get our support Flemish people like me love the Ardennes (went there for 4 days 2 days ago) shopping and Wallonië loves the Flemish coast so yea don’t think that’s gonna happen
You do know you'd both still be in the EU, right? You can just as easily take the 12 minute bike ride either way
Babe wake up, Belgium is "about to break apart" for the 100th time this year
We appreciate that you think we would actually get something politcal done
As a Belgian I can't tell you that while there is tension between our two communities, we aren't going to break apart any time soon.
But if it were to happen, I dont believe that Flanders would join the Netherlands and Wallonia would join France, we aren't part of those country for a reason, we may speak their language but we aren't the same culturally and it doesn't make sens either from an historical lens. Wallonia was never really been a part of France troughout history and Flanders was often separated from the Dutch because of French or Spanish domination. So both region don't really feel like they belong to their neighbors because they weren't really ever a part of those neighbors
We give you Limburg and Brabant, dont need em dont want em
