I LOVEE the acting part of ballet, in my school's end of year spectacle I'll be one of the side characters, but aaa I've created a super crazy backstory about her and my group. I know its probably overreacting but I can't help, just love it
Hi Kathryn, I've been following your videos for some time and I can't tell you how much they have improved my performance. I'm at least a decade older than you but thanks to ballet I feel young and beautiful; thank you for helping me with that. Basically your videos have shown me that I can keep up with the 18 yo in my class except that I've had kids.
My teacher gives us new music once a month. I love it because she uses piano versions of well know pieces like broadway tunes, variations, etc. It has really helped me work on my artistry because each song has different emotion behind that I can express
Thanks for this, Katy! this wll be really helpful for me for the future, during my competition it was really difficult for me to get the artistry my teacher wanted XD
Love this video^^ I love inputting more artistry in my dancing I think that makes a dance ten times more meaningful not only to me but definitely also for the audience. As I am a new dancer, I struggle with inputting my emotions and character into my dancing as I am so engrossed in improving my technique but I'm getting better and trying to open up more:) During a few performances when I did actually embrace the music and show more of me as an artist it felt amazing, maybe more than ten times better than when I was just doing steps^^ I really like your tip of doing class as the character, its such a refreshing tip! I can imagine it being very helpful so thank you for (again) sharing your tips from your experience. Lastly, (sorry this is kinda long) thank you for taking your time out of your schedule to help us out with your videos:)
Hi Kathryn I don't dance but I really want to get into choreography and I was wondering if you could do kind of a dance vocabulary to help us who don't completely understand the terms Thanx
Love this video :) can't wait for the foundations series :3 will this video appear on the app automatically as it is not on the app under new videos :P I'm in love with the app, I'm on it constantly!
+****Georgia**** Hi Georgia! The video should appear under "new videos" within a few days. It takes it a little while! So glad you are enjoying the app!
Hey Kathryn, love your videos!! Can you please do a video on how to do an entrechat six? or you can make a video on how to do different beats? Thanks!! :)
This is an amazing video. I am really struggling with facials and telling a story through dance, because I just couldn't figure out what the story was... now I know that that was my mistake. I was trying to find something that I had to make for myself. I'm good at making up stories, so just making sure that I make them instead of needing someone to tell me the story, will help me for sure :) I'm going to take my dances for this years dance recital (that only have subjects, but no story) and I will make stories for them :) So if you excuse me, I'm going to make a story about freedom, climate change, 9/11, hairspray the musical, protests and 3x lifestyle (used to be brexit) :)
Hi Katie! I loved this video - it was really helpful! I was just wondering, I have my ballet exam coming up and I wasn't sure if there are any things I can do to prepare for it as I am really nervous about it. I also struggle to turn out my feet and my teacher gets a little bit cross that I can't turn out my feet very well. Are there any good stretches that can improve my turnout?
Do you have any ideas or advice on ways to play The Queen of Hearts from Alice and Wonderland? I am trying to play her to the fullest, but I am not onstage a lot. Thanks so much! :)
Hi Katie! I have Nutcracker auditions on Saturday and I've been taking class with the ballet master and director, and the same note I've been getting is that I need to get more on my leg. I'm having serious trouble as I feel I'm going to fall over. I really want to prove myself, but I feel like I'm just frustrating them because I can't apply the correction fully. How can I stretch/strengthen to get on my leg more (I'm pulling back). Also, I have pointe class tomorrow and pas de deux the morning after, and a really bruised toenail that hurts to even walk on let alone do pointe. Do you have any pain relief tips? I've never really bruised a toenail X.X Thanks for the advice! Love your videos and I really wish I could have seen your musical!!
+futureofbroadway Make sure you are really up in the hip. Sometimes we might be up on our legs but our hips are the problem. So think of making your hip flat and secure. That should help. For bruised toenails, soak your feet in soapy water for 10-15 minutes. This will help clean any infection and soften the area. Hope that helps! Good luck with your audition!
Thank you so much for this Katy! I have been dancing since I was six years old, but I quit last year when I was 11. I joined back this January, and the other girls in my class are doing their exams in December. My ballet teacher called me over and told me she would like me to do my exams with the others! I was speechless, as I feel I'm very behind and everybody is better than me. I've been working extremely hard ever since, (using you're stretching videos, thanks again!) but now I'm always aching and I always feel weak. I'm always told to slow down a little but I really want to do as well as the others in the exam. Any advice? Thanks in advance! x
+Caitlin Louise That is fantastic Caitlin! Good for you for moving up so quickly! Make sure you are staying hydrated and are eating enough. Your body needs the nutrition since you are working so hard. Much love!

What a novel and wonderful exercise!-- "Pick a character and take class As that character." Wonderful Idea!!!
I LOVEE the acting part of ballet, in my school's end of year spectacle I'll be one of the side characters, but aaa I've created a super crazy backstory about her and my group. I know its probably overreacting but I can't help, just love it
Outstanding and authentic advice for teachers and dancers alike. Brava, Katie!
+Ballet in the City Thank you! xo

One of my ballet teachers uses the "Ballet Goes Pop" album and we love it. She also plays Nutcracker music occasionally

My pianist teacher is like: Do the class strictly and no acting, but hopefully my ballet teacher likes when I act like character in class😅❤️
Do you have any ideas or advice on ways to play The Queen of Hearts from Alice and Wonderland? I am trying to play her to the fullest, but I am not onstage a lot. Thanks so much! :)
