Generally "hex signs" refer to the artwork painted on round wooden disks. "Barn stars " generally refer to the designs painted directly on barns. This goes across English and PA Dutch peoples. But it can vary more often by who you ask. There are no hard and fast rules.

I've heard that only Outsiders ("the English") call them hex symbols. What do the Pennsylvania Dutch call them?
