    Hearing you saying this and praising the European Idea,
    makes my heart warm and makes me be proud of to be a (very small) part of this European Project.
    Democracy, human rights, fundamental rights, peace, prosperity and stability, to be able to live your life, joyfully, in security, with open borders in a shared economy while perserving our cultural heritage, our environment and our humanity.
    Sounds boring?
    But your are right, that kind of "boring", aka peaceful, sounds pretty good to me.
    Lets cherish "boring in that sense", aspire to and work for it.
    We Europeans, yes we can, even if we are "boring".

    • @julianmorrisco
      @julianmorrisco 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@romaaeterna5476 Why? I can tell you why. A combination of Putin’s Trolls, right wing ideologues and chancers like Johnson convinced just enough people that Britannia still ruled the waves, only those pesky Europeans were holding her back. The most stupid own-goal scored by a (barely) functioning liberal democracy I can think of, only matched or exceeded by dumb moves made by dictators (cf Russia 2022). It will lead to the break up of the UK. Scotland will happily rejoin the EU, NI will rejoin via reunification with Ireland and after a long, painful salty strop, Rump UK (England and their long-suffering gaslit girlfriend, Wales) will be begging to rejoin as they find out the world doesn’t see England in the same way they do. Europe would be wise to tell them to eff-off and by that time the financial centre of gravity will have moved East, partly because of Brexit and ‘Wingland’ or ‘Englales’ will be irrelevant and poor so the EU will have moved on. As an Australian I’m almost sad to see the Poms shit the bed like this. Almost. They need to be taken down a peg or two to learn some humility. Apparently. The UK is important to the world, just not that important and as a result of this shit show will be much less important.
      So, what’s your schtick? Fascist? Salty lefty upset at poor treatment of Greece during the crisis (a legitimate grievance but one doesn’t cut off one’s nose to spite one’s face)? Or Russian Troll? Them’s yer options.

    I am an ex Brit’ who thought Britain getting out of the union was a horrible mistake, as indeed did almost half of the British population. How can you deny geography? The exit was the result of political neglect of post industrial Britain and over centralized government feeding the greed of the power brokers. Were there things about the EU that one could criticize…..yes many but not so many as to warrant leaving but I am just one person. Perhaps we can blame the withdrawal on the psychology of centuries of being an island? Who knows? Perhaps the push of European elites to be the United States of Europe too quickly? I wish Europe well and ask them to always keep in mind the many in Britain who still feel themselves cheated. So Happy Europe Day people.

      we know jane, we know - i hope the brexiteers wake up soon and start to be honest to themselves and others ans say out loud: "we have been lied to"
      when the day comes,. we can take it from there.
      I will never get over the fact that a decision of such cosnequence can be made over a simple majority - and w/o the voices of the countless british expats that were living as per their EU rights in a different european country at the time of the vote.
      excluding those from the vote whom it concerns so directly should be unconstitutional and persecuted. I would not be surprised if that was no coincidence

      I wish, Britain will find back to the European family.
      In this crisis, we see how valuable your support can be, how standing united and hold the line, can be crucial,
      How important the fundamental basis of the European architecture is, of which Britain had a fair share in building it actually.
      But I am glad, that Brexit happened, because it showed, where EU has to improve on.
      First, every regulation, law, whathaveu, should be optional, not mandatory.
      No punishment, nothing, if a country does not want to apply it.
      Second, susidies if not abolished (better), should be paid out by the countries themself.
      Importtaxes should be abolished.
      Everbody should pay their share of the cost, democratically fair, no common debt.
      Third no veto, that is undemocratic.
      In that case, there would have been no good reason, why Britain should leave the EU.
      Still we have not reformed the EU in that way yet, but we should.
      And then hopefully our "weired" bros and sis from that rainy island would join the club again.

      It's ok, you can go join the EU across the water. England is the second most depressed country in the world, so I think it's more a location issue 😂

  • @paul1979uk2000
    @paul1979uk2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The EU isn't perfect and does need reform but I'm happy it's here, European countries would be much weaker without it and I have to wonder how much harder it would be to protect our values in Europe, especially on workers rights, food standards, social standards and the likes.
    I suspect without the EU, countries like the US would play us off each other and would actively go out of it's way to weaker our standards to favour its own corporations, the US tries that with the EU but the EU is powerful enough to stand up to them, it's looking like the UK with Brexit will become an easy target for them.
    Basically, the EU is there not because of want but because of need, a need to protect European values, to protect our political and economic interest and it's going to be needed a lot more with the rise of China and the US still growing that the EU countries are going to need to integrate more in key sectors to compete.

    • @rockflowerful
      @rockflowerful 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree with you . No small country can stand alone now. Power only respects power, some politicians, when it suits them , talk about “the special relationship’, supposedly between UK and the US. I am sure this is a fantasy, a propaganda tool. If you ask most British people are you European, they say yes. I am sad that Britain left the EU as many are, not only that but can I be a little proud? And say that I think Britain had much to offer the EU as well .The Prime Minister set up the referendum to placate rebels in his own political party, it was all they needed. Once his mistake caused Brexit……he skulks off leaving his mess. This terrible war of Putin…….an attempted genocide of Ukraine, has done us some favours, strengthened NATO and united the EU. Fingers crossed,could it just make Britain think again?? Perhaps the EU, could invent a loose relationship for Britain. Just as you allow a awkward horse a loose rein. Best wishes.

    • @paul1979uk2000
      @paul1979uk2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@rockflowerful True and another big factor is that the EU projects European values around the world, the EU is a big player when it comes to international laws, rules and regulations, if it wasn't for the EU, European countries would get sidelined and we would end up following the rules the US puts in place or worse yet, a rising China could do the same, both countries have lower standards in a lot of areas compared to European countries.
      The so-called special relationship, I'm British and I live in the UK and yet I don't see any area where the UK benefits from that so-called special relationship that say France doesn't, in fact I feel the UK's close ties to the US gets it into more trouble than it's worth, the UK's real friends are in the EU and it's sad that not enough people in the UK see that.
      I think the UK will end up rejoining the EU at some point in the future but it won't be any time soon, the dust on Brexit will need to settle and it's hard to say if Northern Ireland and Scotland will leave the UK and join the EU as separate countries, I say the risk is quite high on that one over the next decade.
      In any case, Brexit was needed for the UK because the British needed a real wake-up call on how much the EU project means to us as too many lies are being spread on the EU project that someone's the best way to learn is the hard way which is what the UK is going through now and it's likely going to get worse with lowering standards to try and compete, not very good for the British people.
      Putin is another case, someone that is living in the past, longing for the old days when Russia was a power, truth is, it's quite a weak country now with a GDP in between Spain and Italy and everything Putin is doing in Ukraine is favouring the EU and NATO, more countries want to join both organizations, there are real talks about reforms and integration in the EU, especially on military, security and energy policies with Putin creating more unity in the EU and west overall then even I thought we would see, it will be interesting to see how that develops over the next decade but it's not doing Russia any favours that even Ukraine that before the war might have had a chance of close relations with Russia, now there is little to no chance of that with Ukraine wanting to go full steam ahead into the EU and NATO.

      there is also the economic component he failed to mention - which gives us a longer lever in trade negotiations , than if we had to negotiate that individually :-)
      So, sorry america - but you can keep your chlorinated chickens, we have our own ranches :)
      Many years the nations have sent their B-team to the european parliament, and that is where the bureaucracy-perception comes from, a place full of folks no one elected, and who just sit there to earn an extra salary...., but this is slowly changing - better politicians go there now, and they seem to have more weight these days when they speak than 10 years ago.

    While far from perfect, the alternatives are truly horrible - ive been traveling for a living and had the chance to feel authoritarian systems from the inside perspective.

      Russia has to reform itself first....in every institutional and economic fields. It will take décades.
      As a lawyer myself i sadly know that there is litteraly no rule of law, no decent judicial system, indépendance of justice, and balance of powers in Russia, not mentioning the civil and individual liberties.

    It hasn’t done any of the four very well, good for the Germans tho. The EU is a lot like Putin without the tanks and Artillery.
