You can ask for a iPad Air for Christmas or your birthday (if you celebrate Christmas, if not, you can ask for it at Eid if you’re Muslim and at any other gift-changing party in any other religion :))
      It’s not expensive and it’s great :)

I've started with digital artworks in 2010. At first I used only my mouse, but after a few months I saved up enough money to effort my first drawing tablet. This was the "Odys Grafik Board", it costed me 50€. I choosed it because it had a large surface (about a A4 size) and I absolutely disliked the small ones like Wacom Bamboo.
This cheap device work great for me and so I used it for around 7 years. It has never let me down, but the fact that I always had to use it with a computer bothered me. Especially when I visited my boyfriend for a week or a weekend. So I finally decided to look for another option... I got lucky and found a Cintiq Companion 2 on ebay. Labeled as used but nearly new (the previous owner didn't liked it as much as he hoped for, because of its weight). I bought it and now that I'm using it for around 3 years I still love it sooo much x3
But I totally agree with the fact that your device doesn't make your art good. It's the amount of effort you put in it!

with the drawing benchmark, draw the same thing twice on the companion 1 and see what the difference is, then that difference takein into account would tell you what the real difference between 1 and 2 is.

Great video, thanks Jazza. I wonder how they would compare both out of the box brand new. Since you've used the 1st gen so much in the past does it still perform as it did out of the box. It would be cool to save the Gen 2 benchmarks and do the same test in a years time after extensive use/abuse and see how that tracks over time.

    Awesome video as always!
    Few Questions:
    - So, I understand it does not need a computer to work which is great! But can it still connect to a more powerful desktop? How is it compared to the 13HD, is it the same thing but the companion has the advantage of being an independent computer.
-How is it in terms of rendering when using software like Maya, Zbrush or Premiere?
-I believe it comes with windows 8.1, have you upgraded to windows 10 yet? and did you experience any noticeable issues with the drivers?
I'm deciding between either getting the companion or getting the 13HD and upgrading my computer.

    •  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You can connect it with your apple or windows device and it will work like a regular Cintiq 13HD :)

Hello ! You helped me a lot to understand the difference between this two tablets, but I have always the same question that comes in my mind, perhaps you can answer me because I see that you use/used pretty much many of their tablets. So, I want to know if the interactivity between your pen and the screen is fast/fluid or is it a little waiting till the realisation of a line on the picture that you're working on? I have a Wacom Bamboo product and it's not with a screen. I'm not yet a big artist, but I like to draw on the PC and do graphical things with it, it's faster and you can better do the details. But this one is directly connected to the computer so it works fast for the interactions but is it the same with the companions or Cintiq 13HD perhaps ? I can't try this kind of product because I'm from Switzerland so if you can explain a little bit more about this or suggest me one of the tablets, or anything else I will be really thankfull for that. Thank you !
(Sorry for my bad english :3)

wacom screwed up the 1st cintiq companion. the power issues it will inevitably get are gut wrenching- google "plugged in, won't charge". Had to send mine in for warranty exchange twice and now the warranty is expired, I'm stuck with a $1,800 tablet that doesn't charge. All the computing power in the world doesn't mean squat without electricity. $850 to send in your tablet to be repaired once the warranty expires.

I use the Wacom Bamboo. It may not be one of the fancier kinds of graphics tablets out there, but it sure is a damn good one. Though, I do wonder how the Cintiq would work with Manga Studio. I use Manga studio over Adobe because of price and how much less memory it takes up by comparison. I still use Photoshop for certain brushes, mainly for backgrounds, but when it comes to drawing, itself, I use Manga Studio.

Something or the other goes wrong with the circuit after an year or so and the customer care asks flat 1000 dollars to replace the motherboard. I will be commuting to uni where I'll be studying animation and so I was originally thinking of getting a laptop to use on the train but I think this would be much better for me in general while commuting and at uni and home. I was just wondering, can the companion be used as a main tablet too? So for example, could I plug it into my current desktop and use it as the tablet for that too? And also, do you think that this would be a good investment for someone like me going to uni to study animation???

Jazza, very informative vid. I bought a Surface Pro 4a couple of months ago after seeing the tv ads, and doing online research. But the drawing process has been less than desirable in Photoshop etc, with terrible inaccurate pen/cursor jitter wobble when drawing show or diagonal strokes. Have you used a Surface Pro 4 yourself? I really want a more accurate drawing device, as I'm trying to build up a digital portfolio, but at the moment, the process is more than a little frustrating. The Companion is pretty much out of my price range, it would take a lot more saving to buy one, but would you suggest selling/returning the Surface Pro 4 to put towards one?

  • @WrightGottlen
    @WrightGottlen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

I really would like to upgrade to something like this in the future, but sadly I am on a tight budget, working several jobs just to keep afloat and not starve to death, so an Intel Core i5 M520 laptop with Intel HD graphics card and a Wacom Intous Small tablet (and of course pen and paper) are my friends for the next several years, haha. May be one day...
Love watching your reviews anyway, I am not a very techie person (I am more of a technophobe to be completely honest, never trust computers more than simple pen and paper), so I seek as much advice as possible when buying computers and tablets so I can get the most out of it - your reviews totally help me decide which device is better and the benefits they have and / or lack in comparison. :)

A friend let me try her companion 2 out at a convention we were selling our work at. OMFG I really need one. I am so fed up with bamboo tablets! Sadly money be the issue.... I wish I wasn't still in the startup phase of mah business! These are just so amazing. I have a decent pc and a laptop but I don't have a desk so I have to sit with the bamboo on my lap, my keyboard in an open drawer of my clothes chest of drawers and the mouse has to be put ontop the dresser.... and it's just... not a great system. A companion would mean I could go off and sit on my bed or downstairs and not be an artist hermit. Ah one day... ONE DAY!
The review really helped dude. Cheers.

I hesitate between the model 512GB companion 2 and the 256GB MobileStudio pro . I'm study 3D I wish I had the opportunity to use a little 3D ZBrush for example.... the RAM is important and I don't know if the model of the MobileStudio Pro with 8GB of Ram is adapted for 3D.
Can you advise me? Thank you so much.

WTF? DOTA 2 on low settings with lags for 2900 dollars? You must be kidding me! :-O I am really shocked now, i thought this is a good peace of HW O_O DOTA is made for slowest computers and runs well even on my 4GB RAM computer, which is at least 10 years old now O_O

That is because it windows os. (3:15)
Really the Hybrid was much better option: already a touch Cintiq for you PC(ugh) or Mac - companion was not.
Hybrid could technically be use with your favorite laptop running all your hard core aps under the OS you choose and run the cintiq as the pad(best of both worlds) - MS OS companion not so.
Saw the new 2 at CES 2015 and was more impressed with the 27 HD touch than having to run another Windows device. They had not plans to make a android. So creative pro fans - out of luck for newer tech.
One comment about drivers: wish they would release the android driver for cintiq, you can make an awesome hybrid with a 13HD/13HD touch using a micro pc - running android which are the size of a candy bar. Give you again the stability of android vs Windows 10/8 at the time of pre release.
7:20 - tha is the Intel GPU 6100 series; many don't like the chance in memory and GPU but this is lower energy and with each GEN of intel cpu/gpu they are faster. ( But remember Video Graphic running windows are only as good as the video drivers.) Intel has gone through many driver revs and some time older ones are better. (Again Cintiq is not really your gaming pc).
And there is to over heating and CPU issue with Flash, that has been there with every version of Windows and unfortunately in on MAC too.
Best way to test frame speed and drops: run a youtube HD video with flash then turn off and run it with HTML 5. (if you clear cache and cookie, you also need to reboot the OS. You will notice that dropped frame will be less on a some what clean browser. (pick your browser of choice as not all browser plug-ins are equal)
    Good stuff as always Jazza.
And yes being able to be portable is a big plus. I have gone on trips with a mac mini and the Cintiq 13HD is my display and my graphic pad.
Side note: if you do a lot of color images with high detail not settle for a defective display. You will notice it by the hollywood spotlight effect on the landscape edge of the device. That bleed of light carry over so if for say you have a color going across the base, it will be off to the eye because the bleeding effect is basically burning the screen at the bottom pixels.
Hopefully they have fixed those quality issues.
If you are able to find a hybrid: make sure you have the extend battery one and the larger memory.

Cheaper Companion 2 models need an update. They're still great devices but upgrading them to new Skylake chips and maybe DDR4 RAM's won't hurt. I'm holding myself to buy a CC2 because it has 2 years old processors and still expensive.

You always mention working while watching a movie with your wife. I hope you actually get to see some of these movies with her. Haha
Also, are we ever going to meet the family? I feel like at this point you could have a normal vlog that can also sometimes have educational videos. Your fans might be into it. :)

Jazza, do you think an animation student would benefit from using this tablet in the place of an actual computer? Currently, I'm limping through my art foundation and general education classes with an oooold laptop (I'm a working student and completely on my own, a laptop with 3GB RAM was all I could afford when I bought it) and a small Intuos I bought on sale. However, a year from now I will be starting my animation classes and I'm going to need a machine more powerful than the one I currently have. What you said about it being extremely portable is what sold this device for me. There have been so many opportunities I could have had to draw (lunch time, bus ride home, etc.) but that would mean hauling out The Dinosaur laptop and finding a flat surface to work on. Anywho, the TL;DR of this comment is that I'm planning on saving up to invest in a powerful machine for my art classes and I am wondering: can this device completely replace a student's need for a laptop or computer?

I got my cintiq companion 2 about 2 years ago and it's been quite fine until about a year ago when it suddenly started breaking down internally. Like literally immediately after the warranty ended it broke a number of times, first the sd drive then the whole motherboard a few months after that, I've spent more than $1000 just fixing it. Now it's having issues with the tablet driver where it keeps forcing me to uninstall and reinstall it to work. Tried asking customer service several times now and they're always slow and unhelpful (literally everytime all they tell me to do is reboot)
Idk bout you but my experience with the Cinitq companion 2 hasn't been good at all.

Jazza, how is it you get sponsored by these different companies for videos like this? Do they reach out to you, or do you approach them and say that you have an idea for a video, and then you all set up how you go about it and they send the information?
EDIT: .....If I had watched the video a little bit more, I'd have gotten my answer. Sorry, Jazza.

Cintiq Companion looks like a product I would look into purchasing in the future. I have tried drawing on an iPad, even the iPad Pro and its Pencil. As much as I like Apple products, some how I feel limited by the apps you can use on them, especially when it comes to Photoshop. I like that with Cintiq Companion you can use a full Photoshop program. I know with iPad Pro with the Pencil I did have larger screen, more control, and nice flow, I just don't know if I would want to invest into it. How would the Cintiq Companion compare to the iPad Pro with the Pencil?

is there any jitter drawing at slow speeds? I bought a lenovo yoga 460 after been promised they were great for drawing and the jitter is abysmal. really disappointed and when I get the refund I'm thinking a companion 2 or an iPad pro- what would you recommend? thanks man :)

I love the idea of the companion but I have a pretty decent gaming PC that can run photoshop very well and I think the companion simply wouldn't measure up to what I'm used to.
It would have been nice to see you using brushes that put a bigger strain on the hardware and at a high resolution - for example it looked like you were drawing and colouring with the hard round brush which is incredibly easy to render - compare that to, let's say one of Kyle's watercolour brushes, and the results could be much different - this can be made even more dramatic by sizing the brushes up to say 300-500 pixels which is a little extreme but it's not unheard of.
Not trying to be negative about the review, I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was great to hear your thoughts, I just wish I could try one out for myself and see how it handles more complex brushes and textures.

Oh gosh, i wish I would just be a little near to have the money for a cintiq! Having a Intuos 5 touch&pen right now, but I think there is a huge difference between Monitor-tablett and just-tablett :'(.

Hey Jazza, have you ever tried working on an iPad Pro or a Surface Pro 4?... I really like Wacom products also, but I wonder if you feel you could be as effective and efficient with one of these other tools.

Been using Companion 2 for over 5 months and I must say it's worth of the price. Only thing that is kinda fustrating is calibrating. You have to get used to the cursor not always following the pen tip 100%. When going sides of the screen the cursor is quite off from the pentip position.

I only just got a Cintiq 22HD a couple months ago, absolutely love it, but now I want a companion even though I don't travel all that often xD It would have been handy if I had it for college perhaps.

Would you recommend a cintiq (maybe a cheaper/older one) to an art student? Do you think it's better to do animations (I'm an animation student) on a regular tablet, or on a cintiq? I've been saving up my money and looking at cintiqs, but since we don't have them at the school I don't really know what it's like and if it's really worth it. I know I want to get one eventually, but for now as a student do you think it would be more beneficial?

I'm a little worried that the 150 cd/m2 brightness of the screen is a little to low to use it in my living room with daylight coming thru the window. Is it much lower then lets say a wacom cintiq 22HD (which I own)?
