    But, back around this time, she was WHITNEY HOUSTON. She was flawless from '86-'93.

      More like 83-95. Singing "Home" on Merv Griffin 83' to "This Day" on Vh1 Honors 95'. The Voice after that got raspier but it was still powerful, hence "When you believe" at Oscars 99'.

    Even though her biggest hits still had a Gospel influenced delivery, she still wasn't singing the type of songs Anita Baker, Regina Bell, or Miki Howard was singing. To top it off it appeared that she had a WHITE man in the "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" video. Basically they felt she was a sell out. And the fact she only one 2 Grammys up to that point blows me to be quite honest. She has the greatest female voice to be recorded...point...blank...period.

She was the first female in the modern pop era to have the number one single and album simultaneously (3 times in 8 months), took 3 double album to the top of the charts in 14 months, and she was the first to consistently sell albums 6 gold, I platinum, 2 double platinum and 1 triple platinum album between 75-80. @nuthingbut79thebest ......So very true.....this IS PRICELESS!.....as are ALL of the old Arsenio Hall clips. The memories, my God, THE MEMORIES......absolutely precious! Arsenio provided a showcase for our people (African-American) to exhibit their God-Given talent when very few entertainment & "talk-show" hosts were giving Hip-Hop, R&B, Black actors & actresses that same opportunity for national exposure. To my way of thinking, Arsenio was a national treasure....and we should let him know that.

    Back in that time is was not cool to cross over to pop, whitney later made that cool and set the blue print for the rest to follow her. People born in the 90s dont relize it was a diffrent world back then. Whitney truly blazed that trail!!!!!!

  • @turntableone

    I recall back in the 80s listening to the Tom Joyner Morning Show and they used to talk bad about Whitney and read from the National Enquirer about her and I thought that was so childish. I recall that Tom Joyner and his morning team were not fond of Whitney Houston yet would play her records. I would bet even back then they would have applauded Whitney getting booed at the Soul Train Awards.

      Drew Mcdonald. If you have read Robyn’s book. She mentioned that Arista were having trouble with Black radio stations because they didn’t want to play her music. She had more soul than any pop singer during that era but they only tried to sabotage Whitney. Al-sharpton’s campaign to boycott Whitney did have an everlasting effect on her life. To think she was the wokest superstar at that time.

      I am Me I’ve read the book and it opened my heart and mind to Whitney . It’s so sad how people did her then had the audacity to mock the downfall as if they weren’t the cause . It hurts me to my soul !!

      @iamme588 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Drew Mcdonald. It makes me mad too. I till this day cannot understand why she was criticized for doing things that everyone was doing. I remember that Al-sharpton calling CNN to talk about her greatness and how it is such a loss after she died 🙄 what a hypocrite. Honestly it’s like everyone was mad at her for being successful and once she fell they couldn’t help but be happy. She lost so many of her fans trying to please and be accepted into her own community smh.

    Lets be very clear! If Whitney didn't sing the songs to appeal to a broader audience, she most likely would NOT have become a super star. Black people are not loyal supporters of artists who truly represent black music anywhere near people who sing a broader range of music. That's a fact! If I was a singer, I wouldn't limit my sound and audience to just a 'black' audience either.

    Diana Ross, Tina Turner, and Aretha paved the way for Whitney. If we are to follow your logic without them there would be no Whitney Houston. Also, if anyone can get a Grammy or a top 10 single; where is yours?

    • @SmartRobot-wc2fb
      @SmartRobot-wc2fb 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tina Turner?! 😃 Chaka Khan did, dude...she even says here that she and Luther (Vandross) and her mom, for that matter, know each other from a way back, simply because they ALL sang background vocals for Chaka Khan back in the day and it was also Chaka who gave Whitney her 1st opportunity in singing...and Whitney loved Chaka back the same way...just search for their duet for "I'm Every Woman" live here on TH-cam...

    I think it’s crazy how people judge Whitney and say that she wasn’t black enough.. Uh well duh Whitney was never introduced to the public as an RnB singer.. She was pop but she crossed over.. Whitney has always been a soul singer because that’s where her music came from.. But I remember the soul train awards and yes she got booed because of a comment that was made towards Anita Baker..

    Back then Arsenio was such a brown noser. I hear that he's getting a new show, which is good news. I hope he realizes by now that the so-called stars are just people, especially in light of the tragic way that Whitney went out. (No disrespect intended toward Whitney).

    Let's be clear. Whitney didn't get booed cuz she sung "too white". She was booed because ignorant blacks felt that she sold-out because her music appealed to the greater white audiences. She was singing pop music "How Will I know", "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", and "So Emotional" which were pop songs and her ballads didn't have much of an R&B sound. Don't get me wrong they were all incredibly sung but Blacks wanted her singing soul music.

    • @Thegazelle1000
      @Thegazelle1000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But these people have to remember that "you give good love" was an R&B and Soul song. Whitney used to sing all genres of music in her album (soul, pop, ballad, R&B and gospel). This was a pure jealousy! She didn't deserve a treatment like that!
