  • In Netflix's show Emily in Paris, the wardrobe is VOGUE-worthy. Emily's style is evolving as she gets used to her new Parisian life. I'm reviewing the changes, the key items, what stands for Emily's style and why specific color palettes, shapes and accessories were chosen for this show.

I'd love to see you compare and contrast the style of Emily (who is brand new to Paris), with Mindy (who is a foreigner with more understanding of Paris, having lived there longer) and Camille (who is French and moved to Paris)!

I’m watching Camille’s wardrobe. Her clothes look like a costume now. I’m predicting they’ll look more harmonious as Camille finds herself.

Ah yes... I was wondering about Mindy too. Then there's Sylvie vs. Madeline from Chicago! (Au pairs are not usually middle aged. That was odd... maybe another little subtle joke... about an American getting it wrong??)

Would love to see analysis of fashion though decades from limited series “Queen’s Gambit.” The wardrobe was so elevated in that show. Would love to know if period and globally accurate as she travels a lot internationally for chess (Russia, Paris, Mexico).

It’s so nice to be guided by a fashion designer on how to spot the progression and integration of American to French style. I guess once you live in a different county you pick up their style whether for necessity or not. But this is a nice practice to spot for when watching shows. Haven’t gotten to season 3 yet, but soon will. Happy holidays, J. See you next year 😊

  • @alexviolett

"Emily in Paris" is my guilty pleasure show. I never cared about how unrealistic the budget of her closet is because it's obviously fiction, but how unrealistic her style is for literally any place or occasion?? In the first season I only really liked her cocktail and evening looks, and only two of her work outfits (the yellow with black ensemble and that jeans-poloshirt-checkered blazer combo you mentioned in the video) seemed appropriate to me. Season two was kinda similar. But in the third season her style really did seem to change for the better. Less flashy, less screaming, a bit more professional and tailored, longer cuts, more muted colours. Ans she still looks very youthful in those clothes without being all over the place. As much as season 3 was a disappointment to me regarding the plot and character and lines development, I would venture that this season is the best if we talk about Emily's sartorial choices. Fantastic review as always, Justine!

I don't know why, but when I look at the fashion, I always hold my breath to see what Sylvie will wear. She is (in my opinion) THE french woman you like to see!!! Her outfits are AMAZING. And Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu is great!!! Camille is great. But, it is refreshing seeing a older woman who know who she is, what she wants and always dress in gorgeous fashion. Not flashy, just classy! She reminds me of Carine Roitfeld!

I love Emily in Paris because of the fantasy element to the fashion and styling. Obviously no one would wear this outfits to work or walk the street in stiletto heels. If it was reality, no one would watch :)
Even more interesting than Emily's outfits to me are her boss, Sylvie's style. I love that the creators break moulds and stereotypes by putting a middle age women in some very sexy and out there clothes. I love that! Maybe you can do a review on her style? Loved the video, Thank you and Merry Xmas.

Happy New Year Justine! Would you do an episode on Mindy’s wardrobe? Season two was interesting including artisanal/ upcycled pieces, many off the shoulder horizontal necklines creating definitive terminuses to elaborate bodices, but season three took her to figure skating/ strictly ballroom net body suit horror shows and Chinese production line synthetic body con nightmares. I understand they were demonstrating her character’s new success as a club performer, but it dropped her off a cliff stylistically. And what’s with all those monstrous square shoulder pads? Any insight for us?

I do enjoy when future fashion is influenced by styles of the past from iconic TV shows and movies where they make it popular again which wouldn't necessarily happen if trying to make it timeless at inception. Or when designing being inspired by interesting visuals with a point of difference. I like some timeless things but if it was like that with everything all the time it wouldn't be as interesting, fun or moving. It might slow the evolution of fashion and feel stuck in the past recycling old styles a hundred years ago. Having said that fast fashion does need to slow down and I do enjoy historical and vintage styles and timeless but it would be exciting to see what fashion evolves in another hundred years time

Hi Justine! Happy New Year! I loved the black and white houndstooth outfit best. I'm thinking it would have been fun doing wardrobe on that series! I'm a retired makeup artist and this would have been a total joy for me to work on too!! Aaah! Well. I do enjoy your posts, even at 72 I learn so much. Just a small request: would you do a programme on appropriate yet fashionable looks for women my age? I frequently tune into 'another' French youtuber who is more OLD classic. I'm not that classic and find it ageing! I like to keep up with trends without looking ridiculous. A wardrobe lady I worked with diagnosed me as: classic shapes, crazy colours. It really works for me but since I'm retired I am feel a bit lost and am VERY glad of your guidance!! Your posts are always uplifting and I adore following your career! Exciting! What a brillant pièce of marketing for both the film and Mcdo! There are "Emily in Paris McBaguette" posters up in Macdos in France . In my opinion, Emily is an American girl in Paris, and her outfits reflect purposefully that: no matter how hard she tries, she will always dress like an American trying to be a French in Paris, and not like an actual French in Paris. That's a funny element in the series, in my opinion. And that's obvious if you compare her outfits with those of the French female heroes.

I like it when you explain trends, because you're not a style- authoritarian; meaning: you don't say things like eg: 'people who have style dress with colors like beige, white and grey ... anyways... you asked what (tv)shows you want us to analyze, and I really like the character Villanelle from "Killing Eve". And I think that her wardrobe is to die for. And quirky, yet credible. Since, if you have a great amount of black-money... you can't to anything with it besides: shopping for cloth. Merci! What was weird for me in season 3 was: I felt like they were dressing Sylive - the boss - more like Emily! Meaning, more trendy, and avant garde as opposed to the classic/femme fatale thing she had going on in previous seasons. It struck a wrong note for me. Did you notice this?

Yeah, I thought that too. So many garish metallic garments (shoes, trousers, etc) which I have never seen Parisians wear, and personally don't find them attractive. I feel that some of those items would be too kitsch for Parisians, even the ones working in high fashion.

@@dejavu011 I agree - Season 3 was full of over the top metallic, sequined, fluoro and mesh fabrics - often worn by all three - Emily, Mindy and Sylvie and often totally out of place for the type of event or place they were in.

Her style evolution also involves a key difference in her hair as an emotional component. She is styled in a way that is overtly reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn. This choice reflects the young woman discovering herself in a big city storyline just as Hepburn's characters often did. The pinned back looks, bobs, and shaping are all variations of Funny Face and other films of the time.

Indeed, Emily's outfits in season 3 made me cringe far less than they did in previous seasons. It was funny to see the difference between her and her American boss, who probably deserves an outfit review of her own :D I would love to see your take on fashion in any Korean series, but that would be a rather time-consuming endeavour, so don't have the conscience to request it. Happy new year!

As to why they dropped the gloves in season 3, it's probably because Marilyn Fitoussi took over Patricia Fields (the gloves brand's owner) as the main costume designer after assisting for the two first seasons !

I've discovered that berets look great on me and own several in wool. Very warm and practical, can be folded and carried in my handbag. Love cloches and fedoras, too. Bucket hats, baseball caps and beanies look hideous. I choose what looks best on me, including colors. Don't be a fashion victim!

Happy Holidays! Personally, I’d like to see more videos like this. I notice fashions in TV shows and movies a lot. (Also window treatments! I worked in that department at JCPenneys, and spot many of one’s that were sold there). I found that a lot fashion wise and with hairstyles, was reflected in the daytime soap operas. The differences between the east and west coasts of the USA and, after moving to upstate New York, realizing it took 3 years for the trends to become popular there! Surprising for me. There was a movie portraying the 1970’s, which, unfortunately, I can’t think of the title, that seemed to portray the mens fashion’s well like plaid bell bottoms. Having been in my 20’s throughout the 70’s, I found the women’s fashion’s disconcerting! They were portrayed with a LOT of skin showing. I don’t remember that at all, and I’m from NYC!

I think one of the challenges of costume design for movies/TV is making them appealing to modern audiences while also conveying the era in which they are set. One designer for the film 13 Going on 30 said that it was difficult to come up with outfits for middle school girls in the 1980's that both looked distinctly '80's but still signaled to viewers that these were the cool girls.
Would definitely be fun to hear more of Justine's thoughts on this topic!

One thing I noticed in season 3 is that the outfit sometimes does not match with the weather/ season. For example, the episode where the heat is turned off in the building: Madeleine mentions that it is summer and it is not normal that the heat is on etc. In this episode, Emily wears boots!! Who would ever wear boots on a hot Summer day in Paris? 🧐

I found season 3 wardrobe choices followed closely what's happening on the runway. There were a lot of looks straight from the latest AW22-23 that aligns with filming timelines. I adore all the Schiaparelli dresses and suits they included, Christian Siriano graphic suits, Pucci, and i think the blue swirly print dress may be by Paula Canovass Del Vas(?). It was a treat for the eyes! Patricia Field really did a great job making wardrobe play a part in the show :D

I thought that some of Emily and Mindy’s skirts and shorts were ridiculous. Do young fashionable women really dress that way. And the older women showed far too much decolatage. I’d like your view on whether Parisian women really dress in that “ look at me!” way. Jan

Great analysis! I spent a month in Paris last October, and learned much. For one thing, the tourists outnumber the Parisian locals. The locals are easy to spot. They are the ones barley making ends meet in an expensive city, and they are wearing black, brown, creams, mostly understated clothing, but of higher quality fabrics and classic styles that don't go out of date, perhaps worn in interesting combinations to make the outfits current. I found the 20 to 40-something aged men to be the most interesting, as they sported the pencil cut pants and form fitted blazers, and looked quite current. The older men looked amazing in old clothes, but all classics paired well. Just gorgeous. As for the expensive brands and haute couture, I didn't see logos on the average person, and the crazy expensive clothing and labels being purchased were by the tourists who think this is what Paris is. Ironically, this is not Paris to me at all. The Paris I fell in love with is the food, the working people, the iconic landmarks, the walkable history....I could go on and on. For a city that is known for fashion, the stuff sold on the runway is all "the Emperor's New Clothes". Paris' iconic fashion is on it's average citizen. Although it was fun to spot the intermittent "Cookie Monster" coat (the oversized fur) on the streets when it was cold outside.

Her attempt at looking chic and stylish by wearing expensive designer clothes actually makes her look less sophisticated. Her desperation to appear fashionable just results in her looking incredibly outlandish, and it seems that she lacks the self-awareness to realize that sometimes less can be more.......Emily is the perfect example of "the clothes wearing the person", rather than "the person wearing the clothes".

I loved Emily's eclectic style and the show has revived my interest in fashion. I would appreciate your insight on Sylvie's wardrobe and how older French women dress. Specifically, beyond classic color palettes, patterns and fabrics, what are some popular clothing and accessory fashion trends for women age 50+ in Paris (or in France, outside Paris)?

  • @olacampobella7240

Honestly I can’t watch the show because I find it confusing that the outfits of Emily are completely detached from her character. Emily said that she is not interested in fashion, her outfits are way too expensive for her budget, unpractical, inappropriate and sometimes even unwearable. I understand that the whole show is not meant to be realistic and is used for product placement. But in this case it’s like one character would be a office worker but dressed like a clown for absolutely no reason ( storytelling-wise) 🤷‍♀️
