    Urrghs... I wouldn't even want this as a present. Your score is really mercyful. Ortega can thank god (or the devil? ) that it seems you have a good day. :D
    (PS: Thanks for you reviews! - My Flight Victoria arrived already and it's a dream! Funny fact: They are sold out on Thomann since after your review^^.)

      Well I struggled with the score. Ultimately it works as a ukulele in the basic sense which many I review don’t. But the sound is poor and the playability is terrible

      @@GotAUkulele the look alone of this thing is just enough for me to ignore it without discredit. :) The turtle looks like an odd tatoo of the kind of prison-cellmate who tries to kiss you while you are sleeping. Ortega normally can do things better.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You say Ortega do things better - i've never (yet) seen an Ortega that I thought was much good. Their roots are in classical guitars (which they did well). I am not wholly convinced they know how to make a ukulele. Maybe I just saw the wrong ones.

      @@GotAUkulele I like their new RUTI Tenor (the natural looking one with solid cedar top i think). They are not bad but also not good enough for triggering my buying-reflex yet. :D

      I'd stil be careful. I think they approach ukulele builds wrong. They never seem to have much sparkle or life in them. A bit like Cordoba in that respect. Probably because they are over built

    Man I really love your honesty in reviews. I had a waterman on order the week you reviewed it and I wish I watched before I ordered it cause everything you said was real about it. I actually had to take it back because unplayable.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Being honest in reviews is the only way they have any meaning. TH-cam is full of people paid by brands and shops to say nice things. Every one of their reviews become meaningless for that reason. I made it a clear point from the off to never get into bed with any brand. There are some that I say nice things about routinely (because they are routinely good!) and then I see a bad one and say so. People can’t get their heads around it. But it’s because I tell the truth that this happens.

    I got one today. My experiences was the same as yours. But! I grabbed a small rasp, and a cutter an did what I had to... Strings got way lower, due to the deeper grooves in the upper saddle, frets are fine, and all this little instrument is absolutely ok now. It turned into a fine, playable, clean in sound ukulele. I'm happy with my firstie! ;-)

    Thank you so much for the review! I am keeping my eye out for a mini (piccolo/ sopranino) uke just to add to my instrument collection. I think they can be sweet charming little things if they’re made right. Any recommendations?

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Ohana is MUCH better than this one, though I do find the neck very narrow. Other options are the luthier built models - Andy Miles, DJ Morgan, Antica Ukuleleria, John Daniel, but they will take time to order. Sadly I don't find any of the big brand name sopraninos to be all that good myself

    Hi Gotaukulele, is it possible that they're equipping the Keiki with Aquila's "33U" string set, specifically designed for the "a D F# B" tuning? If so, I have tried that particular set on a number of regular-soprano-scale ukes, and found them to be unpleasantly lightweight and very brittle and anemic sounding. I'm wondering if a set of Martin M-600's would give the Keiki a little more zing...

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly - but this is still an incredibly average built ukulele which is not doing it any favours either.

    • @williamj.sheehan2001
      @williamj.sheehan2001 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GotAUkulele Thanks, GotAUkulele! And not to belabor the point, but... do you think a little bridge work and/or nut work might make this little guy play a bit better? For a uke in this price range, I'm kind of okay with it being on the quiet side; but if the action or intonation are lousy, then that's another story.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@williamj.sheehan2001 Doubtful - the very thin boxy tone is down to the core construction. Sub soprano size ukes CAN work (check out makers like John Daniel and DJ Morgan), but you can't approach them like they are a soprano. I think this is what Ortega did here. I really don't think it's a very good ukulele I'm afraid.

  • @IlexJ
    @IlexJ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have slim fingers so the nut width is less of a problem but the intonation issue stays until the strings have settled in which takes quite some time in this uke. Bought this as a gift for someone else and gave it a try, it drove me nuts because the tuner would say it's in tune but the intonation was terrible.
    Let the strings sit for a couple of months and tighten it up a bit intermittently and it sounds more decent. I would say it's to do with the strings they use and this very short scale length. The tensions aren't quite right.

    Thank you very much for your honest review. We support TH-cam demos and reviews as they give you a first impression of an instrument. Though we always recommend to visit your favourite store and try the instrument you want to buy on your own. Videos can not give you the same feeling and impression of an acoustic instrument that you experience by playing it in your own four walls, in the studio or at band practice. That said, feel free to check out our KEIKI line at one of our partner shops to get a really unbiased impression of the instruments.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How is this NOT an unbiased impression of the instrument???

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "Don't trust a guy who has been reviewing for over 10 years, looked at several hundred instruments in detail, is not paid by brands or musical instrument stores to say nice things... It's biased..."... Gotcha...

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I also think my readers are well aware of the limits to a TH-cam video. That's why the videos are just the supporting feature to the fuller written review on the website. My readers trust my judgement regardless of the video.
