  • Scrapping video about a mistake I made on a scrap find for brass (and other metal) from breaking down a junk piano. Needless to say now I have a useless board as long as a moose to deal with.

Pianos have lots of other metals worth diving for. The cast iron plate can be taken to a yard & redeemed, yes it's just 10 cents a pound but there's 200 pounds of it. The plain strings are steel, and the bass strings have good-quality copper windings on them. Yes, you will get more $ if you separate out the metals, but even as is they can fetch something. In the ends of the keys is lead, good quality, useful for casting fishing weights (or bullets if you know any re-loaders). The keys themselves may well have ivory on them. The wood is often good quality and useful to cabinetry carpenters, and the soundboard is good quality spruce useful to luthiers (violin makes, guitar makers, etc). The pedals may be pure brass or may be steel (or nickel) coated with brass, but the center pins in the action (if you have enormous patience!) is often pure brass. The tuning pins are pure steel, good quality.
So, yeah, it is a lot of work to take a piano apart but there's a lot of good stuff there.

Been there, done that. Well not a piano, but thinking it was something other than steel.
