Bones was stripped by the WBA title prior to making this fight, as well as Ayala stripped of his bantamweight WBA belt, for not seeking permission from the WBA sanctioning body. The two warriors wanted to make this fight regardless of belts on the line, making this fight for the 122 IBO and Ring Magazine Junior Featherweight titles.
