- Dr James Whiteford reveals more about a new treatment which could stop dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) developing into wet. Dr Whiteford and his team at Queen Mary University are looking into a potential new treatment, which, if successful could also offer a new option for patients who do not respond to current treatment.

Problems with anti-VEGF injections:
* High non-responder rate!
* Loss of efficacy after prolonged treatment!
* etc.
This is a highly promising research.. hope Dr. Whiteford makes great progress in getting this to patients soon enough. We will be waiting. Wishing him tremendous success.
How to prevent dry MD. besides vitamins and in lay language how to prevent dry MD to become wet, anti oxidant fruit will it prevent new vessels ?
The causes of AMD are not fully understood, but scientists believe there are a few factors that are responsible, including age, genetics, smoking, exposure to sunlight, and diet. There are a few things that can be done to try and prevent the development of AMD:
- Keep a healthy diet, eating lots of vegetables, including those that are high in lutein (spinach, kale, red peppers, broccoli etc.)
- Stop smoking - those that smoke are four times more likely to develop AMD.
- Reduce your exposure to direct sunlight, wearing sunglasses where possible.
- Talk to your optometrist about taking supplements and which ones would be best for you
Around 10-15% of people with dry AMD go on to develop wet AMD, so if you have dry AMD and you notice a sudden change in your vision, it is important that you contact your optometrist or hospital eye specialist urgently.
