I drove an mr2 spyder that began life as the sequential trans and it was swapped to a 6spd. Matching color hard top and lowered with a Japanese ecu swapped in it…thing was an absolute blast! I actually found the car very easy and controllable to slide around corners, etc. never once felt scared to drift it or even drive it hard around corners with grip. It’s a vehicle that doesn’t meet my current needs (need four seats, etc) but man would I absolutely get one if it did
This is a mid engine 2 seater Corolla. I’m absolutely getting one of these. I used to sell them new for Toyota but at 6 feet tall 160 lbs my knees hit the handicap hand rails built into the door. Only reason I didn’t buy one. I recently saw how to delete that bar. I’m sold. Perfect car for this 39 year old. I’ll be dropping a Toyota v6 in it if it will fit.
@@Ac22768 it matters I drove one of these and I’m 6’2 265 and my thick ass thighs wouldn’t let me turn the wheel, needless to say I didn’t buy it. It’s not meant for big and tall people
Had my MR-S for 6 months now after watching this guide... and I've already bought facelift tail lights, genuine TRD kit, HKS muffler, GP headers, catless downpipe, C-One Scoops, C-One GT Wing... and Tein coilovers and TE37SL's likely coming soon.. I've already spent so much! but I love the car to death so it's worth it. It's not overplayed like every other JDM car... and to me, its the best kept secret from Toyota. May not have crazy power but it handles like a dream. I hope to turbo charge my car one day as well.
one thing is, I drive a 2001 SMT MR-S (nzdm) and I find it really fun, but the pump on mine has failed, luckily I've found a second-hand replacement that I can use while I save money for the MWR Manual conversion kit. The SMT is way easier around traffic and stuff, but still has some of the fun of a manual, but to my knowledge stuff like the Apexi FC only really works with the manual so that's another reason to get a manual or convert an smt to a manual.
Why? I’ve driven a smt mr2 and it was a nice car… and I’ve driven a smt turbo mr2 and it wad great! Why don’t you like the automatic Spyder? With facts…
Wow that’s cheap! Here in the states they sell for a lot more, between £6k, and £11k. It depends on the condition, and mileage. Recently on Bat, a 6k-mile example sold for almost £19k.
@@thomasharris5151the car gets obsolete when the transmission start giving you problems, and is not like oh then I will fix it or I take it to someone else.... That secuencial manual transmission is something special, you need an old Toyota program with an old laptop to try and find what the problem is. Then if you decide to buy the full transmission it is super expensive. Most people just change it to a manual.
@@primitive2924 thanks!!! I’m assuming the manual transmission swap is easy…. Or got grab an used smt from the junkyard. I’m eyeballing a 04 with a turbo with the smt that runs STRONG and FAST!!! I’ll hate to buy it and I’m 3 months I’m in a lurch

But then not even a month pass and the light of dead appear (warning transmission light), the transmission start getting crazy and the only info that I was able to find about the car were old post from 2011. There's only one guy that knows everything on this type of cars and he is very old. And the only dealer that will do a swap for you is monkey wrench. They sell the full manual conversion for 3,000. You don't know how that transmission works, you could even buy a new one but you will need the labtop and the old Toyota program to configure the transmission with the car. You need that specific program to know what the car really has, you can't take a regular obd reader. If you won't believe me just write MR2 SMT transmission problems and you will see all the threads. I hope you see this message before you decide to buy the car.

Underrated and under-appreciated. I hope to find one someday.

I'm 6'4 do you think I could still get one of these if I delete that bar?
I don’t understand what your weight of 160lbs has anything to do with the rest of what you described.

I've heard if you power the car on and off while moving it will disengage the Electric Steering.

Mitch. Cool review. How tall are you? You look tall. Does your head fit? Any issues seeing road ahead?
£5000 is about top price for one of these in the UK. £2000 -£3000 will get you a decent facelift one.
