My mom had gotten into some trouble with drugs. She was put away for 3 years. I lived with my grandparents anyway but I adored my mom.
I wrote this song down-11 years old-and sent it to her.
She was an Aerosmith fan. Something about her daughter finding her own way to one of her faves, and sending the song…she came home and never looked back.
I’m proud of my mom. I have had my own issues since but this song will bring me back to Earth every time.

Been a diehard fan since 1974 when I was in 7th grade. I'm a recovering addict and no doubt Aerosmith is part of the reason I'm still here as I gave up drugs 30 years ago tomorrow God willing😊👍. I did drugs to their music but now clean I have a different attachment to the music I will never stop listening to even at 61. Greatest rock band in my lifetime no doubt!! Good to be alive😊

This song helps me grieve properly, i'm glad my dad showed this great music. My father Kevin, 48. Died Dec 2019. Before the pademic i was just enjoying daily life, who knew that my life would be stripped out of happiness. Not only covid changed everything but losing him as well. So every now and then i come back to this song and think of all happy memories, gives me strength and confidence. Rest easy pops ill play this for you in the heavens! As he would say they probably wont open the heavens gate for him, i bet hes still knocking on heavens door

Always loved this song. Took me years to realize it was about the struggle against addiction. Seriously. Listen to the lyrics with addiction struggles in mind. It’s quite powerful. And you know Steven and the boys struggled with that stuff. Read their autobiography, I did in HS and it’s a fantastic read! Each member chimes in throughout each chapter. I think it was called “Walk this Way: Autobiography of Aerosmith”

This was my coming of age song. 1993!!!! I heard Amazing for the first time on MTV. and I cried tears of joy.....
Just before I realized the most important lesson in my life. I learned I had to be honest to myself and start accepting myself who I am and embrace it. And from there I learned day by day to love myself. Yes it took a while before I got there. Give and take a decade,
But.....
I knew from than that I had to truly become the person I am inside and not anymore try to become that person others wanted, expected and told me to become, because it's not who I was am or ever will be and therefore a mirage in a desert. An illusion.
I knew from then on I had to start my own journey of life so I could grow, evolve and become the person I am today, "Me,'"who these days still sometimes has to fall to learn and grow and hopefuly still has a long way to go before my final destination is reached.
I still sometimes listen to this song, to renember and appreciate that turning point in my life. And when I hear that frase: "Live is a journey not a destination," yes it might be simple and corny, but those 7 words, for me, the meaning of life.

This song was written while he got clean off of drugs. There's no way he was high. I have a similar experience, When you get recovery in your life amazing things happen. God inspires you. hes talking about how he hung out with the wrong people and left out the good people.... "had an angel of mercy to see me through all my sins."... When you finally get sober you realize you had God watching over you all those years..."when i lost my grip and i hit the floor" means when he no longer could control the drug use and it spiraled out of control. " thought i could leave but couldnt get out the door" that means he couldn't stop the drugs even if he wanted to because addiction controls every aspect of your life , to the point where your family, career, and stability doesn't matter, he wanted desperately to stop using but couldn't....
"It's Amazing in the blink of an eye you finally see the light, Its amazing when the moment arrives you know you'll be alright." This may be hard for you to understand but it means he had a spiritual experience, the obsession is lifted and today he has a choice. almost like divine intervention when God changes your whole way of thinking.
"you have to learn to crawl before you learn to walk, but i just couldn't listen to all that righteous talk" - means you have to learn how to live life on life's terms before you really can live life.
"one last shot , permanent vacation" is a metaphor or 2 meanings. The last shot to be successful with the band and the last shot to get sober or die. Singing for the 'Desperate Hearts' hes talking about the people still caught in the grips of addiction that they will one day have a spiritual experience. and hence the dramatic guitar solo

It almost got me fired from the job I Have that I love. work at Lakewood Church in Houston TX. God recently delivered me from addiction. But i never knew this song was about Stevens addiction and him getting over it until I heard him sing it at a celebrate recovery for ppl who are addicted. That's why I LOVE Steven So much. He is a fighter and cares for everyone. We love you Steven! ❤💋😘

This song is about climbing back to the top after you've hit rock bottom, specifically recovering from addition. Steven Tyler wrote it with Richie Supa, who collaborated with the band in the late '70s, co-writing their song "Chip Away the Stone."
Supa did a lot of drugs with the band and eventually got caught with a kilo of cocaine, which landed him three years in jail. After he got out, he went to an Aerosmith show at Madison Square Garden and met Tyler backstage... with an eight-ball of cocaine under his coat. Supa didn't realize that Tyler had gotten sober, and Steven called security to kick him out, telling him to come back when he had been off drugs and alcohol for a year.
Supa cleaned up, and after a year sent Tyler his Alcoholic Anonymous medallion to prove it. In the summer of 1991, they got together amid fears from Aerosmiths' management that Tyler would slink back into addiction in Supa's presence. Both knew they weren't going back to drugs and alcohol; when Tyler brought this up in a phone conversation, he told Supa, "Isn't it amazing?" which triggered the idea for this song.
Supa remembered something a client had said at one of his AA meetings: "I kept the right ones out and let the wrong ones in," which kickstarted his idea for the lyric about the descent into addiction and subsequent recovery. He flew out to meet Tyler, writing more of the lyric on the way, and when he go there, they finished the song in four hours - it was one of the first songs written for Get A Grip. The pair stayed sober, and would team up again to write the Aerosmith hit "Pink."
The line, "That one last shot's a permanent vacation" refers to the Aerosmith's comeback album Permanent Vacation, which put them back on top. The line, "How high can you fly with broken wings?" is a reference to their logo, which contains a set of wings. >>
This was the second of three Aerosmith videos that featured Alicia Silverstone, who had starred in the movie The Crush. All three clips - "Cryin'" and "Crazy" were the first - were directed by Marty Callner.
"Amazing" also starred Jason London, who was in the film Dazed and Confused. In the video, he goes into a virtual reality world where Silverstone becomes his love interest.
