  • The market town of Driffield, at the base of the Yorkshire Wolds, paid for and ran a canal navigation from the River Hull. The terminus still looks very much like it used to in the 1800, as you can see from the before and after pictures from the early 1900's.
The Driffield Navigation Amenities Association is a volunteer charity that keep and maintain the navigation. Here cleaning the canal and coping stones, and then a trip in the new trip boat to Whin Hill Lock. Due to little usage the channel had weeded up, so it wasn't an easy job.

The fixed bridge situation reminds me of the Bridgewater-Taunton Canal in the sixties. With a willing council and planning dept. these problems can, as there, be overcome.

Seeing the state that canal is in, it amazes me that that one lock is functional and deep enough.
Are there any plans to restore this canal?

Hi Ed, the whole canal is restored but there are some bridges that need moving. Unfortunately only small dinghies can use it at the moment and the weed over runs the canal.

Well then, some dredging and de-bridging and all is well! Would be worth it i think. :-)

Sowerby Bridge got round their road problem by digging a very deep lock...is there a modern Brindley who could get a canal under or over Wansford Road?
    What about a Falkirk wheel?

The water is very clear here. Why is this different with all other canals? Other canals are filthy looking.

stan crouch It's just silt and mud stirred up by boats or the operation of locks. The problem is that weeds grow in the clear water, so a bit of usage is preferable. Any canal will clear given long enough, and that is usually the beginning of the end.

canal water stays dirty because it has lots of very fine sediemnt from all the vegetation dropping leaves over two hundred years and here is comparatively little movement of water through the canal systems such as the Hebble at Sowerby and Elland that I know, while here in Driffield the canal get a steady flow of clear water from the beck...that is why big trout like to lie in the fresh water waiting for food to drift to them.
