Hi Dave - Great tutorial. I've been using AI Art with MidJourney for a while now. To make characters you also have to do surgery to make them work. The reason I use MidJourney is that I can generate "Style Sheets" and generate a front, profile, 3/4 and rear view of the same character. I can then use the views together or separately to make them walk or turn. I have used generative fill in PS to change the clothing of each character pose by just circling the character and prompting. AI and CH is a great combo !
This is so great! I've actually been playing with this for a month or 2, using your older tutorials. Tonight I randomly decided to see what your newest videos were - and boom! You're doing exactly what I've been doing!!! I'm really looking forward to learning more. Thanks for continuing to make these tutorials! My new one comes out on Sunday, and I'm working on a puppet that has waving and other action-based movements from your other tutorials. It's so fun!
I was trying this with a character and found "Layer via Copy" works better for isolating a body part than Layer via Cut if you don't want the white space afterwards.
Thanks Dave! I've been playing with this already so it's good to see I was on the right path! I've learned a ton since I started using CH in 2022. Thank you!
Mixer brush is great! But if we want our character to talk, we'll want at least some jaw movement and and open mouth showing. For a silent background character it could work well though.

Hello Dave, could tell me if a puppet from Ai jpeg image is heavier than drawn in Illustrator? And multiple character made from Ai in the same animatation scene in Adobe Character will impact pc CPU and GPU? May be I should prefer Illustrator for best performance?
hi, Hello, when you first import the tiger after separating the head and body, it moves synchronously with the camera, but I did not experience such a situation, I wonder why? I did everything exactly as in the first step. I also get this warning: body tracking requires a puppet with an armed (active) and enabled body behavior
You could drag both and hands and turn it into a replay. If you want to record one arm and see it while recording the other, add two dragger behaviors. Check out th-cam.com/video/XolxHNixBpA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=XGLLrJ_8oQQM98EB&t=262 for more info.

For the arms moving away from the body at the shoulder, usually this would mean the arms aren't connected properly to the body group - check your rigging against an example character and see if there are any differences. For the arm placement, if you want the arms to go in front of the body you would want to put those layers above your body group in the PSD or AI file. If these problems persist, please upload a video or screenshot of your issues to adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll try to help you out.
Hi Dave, I’m looking for some guidance on managing multiple characters and multiple scenes, as I can see the structure within Ca rapidly getting out of hand. Hey, thanks for making this video, its exactly what I was searching for. Slightly random question, how would you rig a cartoon Starfish? as its just 1 body part, ive generated in Midjourney, followed your tutorial for eyes and mouth which is working well, but at a slight loss for rigging the rest so it can dance along to videos.
Good question! I would probably use the Head with arms and feet example from the Intro to Rigging pack found here: pages.adobe.com/character/en/resources. That guy is basically one big head and then you could rig the top star appendages as arms and the bottom as feet. Should work well!
When I click CMD X the head comes off but when I click CMD, Shft, and V, I get a black-and-white outline of the head??? what am I doing wrong.? Also, I clicking "remove the background," I am not using the lasso tool to remove the background.
Hmm, your settings might be different than mine, you could always just use the basic copy and paste commands. And yes, remove background is a new addition that works well too!
Hello, your work is great. One question, how can we make the character walk forward towards the camera with these types of characters. I say this because of the complexity in designing these types of characters. Do you have training in this field?
Character Animator is more about side walking, but for front walking you would need to manipulate the character to do cycle layers frame by frame animations (like th-cam.com/video/gv_2Upvtm-M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=54OnswzWlkz-IYL_&t=281) or use motion library (like th-cam.com/video/ZTevkEadskk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LeC8Vw-BmJwYeLBD&t=574).

Just go to File > Import and select your Illustrator file. CH doesn't save the actual art file, it just references it like many video editing apps do, so keep your Illustrator file in the same spot and you should be good to go.
Honestly, I see a lot of people complaining about AI art, and I just don't get it. Did people react the same way when electric razors were invented, because "barbers are gonna go out of business, boo-hoo"? If you want a high-quality result, you have to have it done by a professional, and this goes for barbers and graphic designers as well. If you are okay with a lower quality, with all its faults, that's up to you, and you are free to do so with a TOOL we now have.
@@ovschinikovyou sound bitter, ai art is amazing. You can create so much content faster and cheaper. Before ai art many artists would rip off customers for basic designs.

Hello master okaysamurai, how are you? I hope you are very well, my name is Adrian, the reason for my message is to ask for help, I would be very grateful if you could help me with the following problem, in Character Animator & Photoshop not connecting :-(..... I have downloaded a PS face template from the official Adobe site, I try to load it in CH and it does not detect it, it is as if the file did not exist, I tried to drag the file to the CH program and nothing happens, help please :(
Make sure you have a valid PSD file and in Character Animator go to File > Import. You will need to be in Pro mode for this - click the upper right corner and switch from Starter to Pro if needed. If the problem persists, please upload a video or screenshot of your issue to adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll try to help you out.
@@okaysamurai Thank you very much, master. I have fixed the previous problem, but now another one has arisen in relation to this video. I have done the entire process exactly twice from minute 0 to minute 6:21 and when importing my PS file to CH, my character does not appear with floating movement as it appears to the master. Does anyone know why?
Make sure all your layers are on and named/organized correctly. If you are not seeing any floating it probably means your Head layer isn't tagged as a Head. You can post a screenshot in a new thread on adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll help you out more.
It's exciting to see AI enter fields like illustration and animation. Although there are worries about AI replacing artists, history shows that new technology often creates more opportunities than it takes away. Just like how cars became affordable with mass production and digital tech made everyone a potential photographer, AI is here to enhance, not replace, our creativity. It can level the playing field and make art more accessible, allowing artists to focus on unique aspects of their work. The key is adapting and using these tools to boost our creative skills and potential.
File > Import a PSD or AI file and then select it in the project panel. If the problem persists, please upload a video or screenshot of your issue to adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll try to help you out.
@okaysamurai Hi, I managed to do it, I just switched to Pro version, the good thing is that now is working. I start working along your video for a project. I have a lot of fun, your video is amazing. Keep up the good work. And thank you for the reply
Animate is for more traditional keyframe and tween based animations, Character Animator is more performance capture and live animation. It depends on the project and what workflow you're going for, I think of them as a screwdriver and a hammer - both great tools, just depends what you need to do.
If the character is set up correctly, the body will move with the head as you move around. The arms I show at 19:49. If that's too quick, you can check out th-cam.com/video/hK-DjtiPzRs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=SQOIiyesgQRIYqvZ&t=1568.
This tutorial was very helpful and might come in handy somewhere in the future. However I'm just learning to get the hang of Fresco for making my background artwork. Should I spend my time to learn how to work with Fresco or should I just ask Firefly to make something for me?
Honestly both seem like valid workflows to me. Personally I LOVE Fresco and the illustration process, but backgrounds are probably one traditionally time consuming area I might turn to Firefly more for in the future to give myself more creative time to work on other stuff.

How do you save the illustrator file to Character animator?
Electric razors did not steal people’s labor and work, trained on it and claimed it like its own. You tried to draw, you failed, we understand.
@@ovschinikovyou sound bitter, ai art is amazing. You can create so much content faster and cheaper. Before ai art many artists would rip off customers for basic designs.
@teddyperkins1777 i do like Ai art but the quality is not good for print on for digital
I'm trying to figure out why I'm just learning about Chararcter Animation? Been using The graphics software since the CDs. This is amazing. Thank you for this.
when I make a puppet model at some point the pupils stop moving to follow the pupils from the webcam ((( How i can handle that?
You would need to rig each as +Left Pupil and +Right Pupil and make sure there are big enough Left Eyeball and Right Eyeball layers for them to move in. Check this out for more eye rigging tips: th-cam.com/video/5SxNChhm0jo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=c46RFa0eAKuRWqK4
@@okaysamurai would see, thank you for advice)) you awsome)
Can you make a Character out of a real person? If so, then can you point me to a tutorial on how. Thank you.
Yes, if you took photos of a real person you could cut them up and rig them exactly like I show in this tutorial.
Awesome video bro!
Agree 100%. This is exactly the approach I've taken towards AI...a creative tool, not a replacement.
I try to import my character into adobe character but cannot be selected. please advise
Amazing content, like always ❤... I'm hearing a 20 types of mouths tutorial 👀
Hahahaha...
Hi. My Adobe Animator Character program cannot see .psd file. Can you give me advice what to do?

Can’t u do the same thing in Adobe animate ?
Animate is for more traditional keyframe and tween based animations, Character Animator is more performance capture and live animation. It depends on the project and what workflow you're going for, I think of them as a screwdriver and a hammer - both great tools, just depends what you need to do.
I saw you moving your face and the tiger moved as well. I missed how you moved all the body parts, though.
What is the link to photoshop please. I can’t find it.

@@okaysamurai Any other person might have said "It's up to you to decide" So I am grateful for your honest opinion and that you are so straight forward with what you say. I'll give firefly a try. About Fresco I have to admit that the vector brushes are amazing.
Thanks for sharing your process Dave.
Which website to use to make animated cartoon in Android?
You can use Animate from Audio on Android: www.adobe.com/express/feature/video/animate/audio
I would love to see you use Adobe Illustrator's text to vector and then animated in Adobe Character Animator. 😊
Oh, I just got to the end of the video and you covered Adobe Illustrator's text to vector! 🙈😆
I'm looking at teaching this application to middle school students this term, thanks for the great tutorial, I look forward to seeing what they come up with. While still learning the basics myself, I am curious to know if Character Animator has the ability to work with multiple angles of a character rather than a 2d puppet style of animation?
Some Character Animator puppets do have multiple views/angles, but they are all 2D. You will find more multiview characters in the desktop Pro version of the app.
Superb tutorial.thank u so much
I have a character from mid journey can I use that
Yep, same concept here would apply to a Midjourney character.
Impressed by how far Adobe has come from old school Adobe flash to make animations...great tutorial
Thank you 😊 That was fun to watch 🤓
Are you using motion capture? Is that available on Adobe Animate, or is it a plugin?
This is all in Adobe Character Animator. www.adobe.com/products/character-animator.html
@@okaysamurai Cool, I got that today. Thanks.
Great job as always! thanks
I really can't make my puppet mouth to talk and I really don't understand why

@@okaysamurai thank you for the link but I thing this tutorial over here is the right one because my puppet is a stati image, like the tiger. So I guess I am doing something wrong here. I will try and try and try. Thank you, you're precious!
Ah good point, you're wanting the Nutcracker Jaw behavior. If the problem persists, please upload a video or screenshot of your issue to adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll try to help you out.
Awesome. Thank you.
Awesome! Thanks for that!
