How the media failed Aaron Bushnell

  • “If he did this for, say, Ukraine, the way that the media would have covered it, would have been entirely different.”
Assal Rad, historian and scholar of Middle East history, discusses the extreme protest act of Aaron Bushnell, a US Air Force member, who set himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC.
She critiques mainstream media coverage for erasing the purpose of his protest and emphasizes the importance of accurately telling his story to highlight the lack of humanity in the framing of the Palestinian narrative and its advocates.

Can't believe how silent the Western news outlets are. Yet every day there's a new video on Navalny's family/funeral/wife. They choose to mourn the passing of a Neo-Nezl associate rather than a US soldier who sacrificed his life. It saddens me.

He, in his mind, sacrificed his life defending his country against injustice. Even if it be in speech and action without harming anyone else but himself. An enlisted US Airman burning himself in front of a foreign embassy, the same embassy all US politicians must refer to as “our greatest ally?” I mean. Come. On.

AIPAC in America is interfering in elections. In Australia a Zionist group got a journalist fired from the ABC news channel for sharing a pro-Palestinian tweet. I'm far more worried about Israeli interference in the West than Russian dark money. We're now seeing the UK more towards becoming a fascist police state just like Israel is. Israel is not a democratic country yet they are calling the shots in so-called bastions of democracy. Zionist lobbies are influencing and shaping government policy from foreign policy to policing and censorship. How long before they pressure our governments to start going through our internet history and go after people watching anti-Zionist videos on YT. I fear for the future of the West. Aaron Bushnell's case is least the SECOND case of self-immolation protesting the war. There was another one in December 2023 in Atlanta which was completely ignored and suppressed by the media. Please cover that story as well.
The police did not release the name, age and gender of that person. That's how the establishment covered it up and would have done the same to Aaron Bushnell had he not livestream his. Someone needs to do an FOI request in Atlanta, GA.

The world seems to be selectively blind to harrowing events unfolding, such as the livestream of Aaron Bushnell's self-immolation. The images go viral on social media and are hotly discussed. But while superficial news adorns the headlines elsewhere, Aaron Bushnell's actions and message remain eerily silent in the mainstream media.
In the few moments of attention paid to the event, he is quickly portrayed as depressed or mentally unstable, allowing people to get away with paying little attention to his message. However, he was fully aware of what he was doing and given that it emerged from within his own ranks it is just about the strongest imaginable indictment of government policy. He saw it as a necessity and hoped to make people think about it. He literally sacrificed his life, in the most horrific way, to draw attention to the injustice against the Palestinians. His self-sacrifice and the extreme pain he suffered for it justify a little more depth in his act and the motivations behind it.
Consider the iconic images of the monk in Vietnam who set himself on fire and thus became a symbol of resistance to discrimination. Or the man in Tunisia who, with his self-immolation, expressed the extreme despair of the Arabs and thus unleashed the Arab Spring.
How big is the contrast in reporting now that the self-igniter's message is not in the interests of those in power? How different would it be if it were a Ukrainian who set himself on fire in front of the Russian embassy, or a Jew seeking the release of the hostages? This contrast is further reinforced by the fact that Aaron Bushnell did not just perform his act anywhere, but right in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington and live in front of the eyes of the world. And this in the middle of an extreme situation in Gaza that has been gripping the world for months.
In a world of fair and impartial journalism, this event would undoubtedly dominate all talk shows and news broadcasts. Aaron Bushnell's last words were that as extreme as the act he was about to perform, it is not extreme at all compared to what Palestinians experience on a daily basis. The same can be said about seeing his act: As gruesome and extreme as it may be, it pales in comparison to the extremity of his act and the pain he willingly endured for the sake of his message.
Therefore, do not be fooled by the double standards in the media and dare to face his actions. Try to understand what drove him to this ultimate act of desperation and what message he wanted to convey to us. If Palestinians are on fire every day and Aaron Bushnell is willing to sacrifice his life, then watching his protest is the least we can do.
Aaron Bushnell is a resistance hero.
    Free Palestine.

I am an anarchist, which means I believe in the abolition of all hierarchical power structures, especially capitalism and the state… I view the work we do as fighting back in the class war which the capitalist class wages on the rest of humanity. This also informs the way in which I want to organize, as I believe that any hierarchical power structure is bound to reproduce class dynamics and oppression. Thus, I want to engage in egalitarian forms of organizing that produce horizontal power structures based on mutual aid and solidarity, which are capable of liberating humans.

He was a beautiful soul and obviously felt the pain and plight of the Palestinians so deeply that he could not stand it anymore. For Aaron, the pain experienced by setting himself on fire paled in comparison to the pain he experienced of watching his country be complicit in Genocide. It is not difficult to decipher! It is plain as day! I can only imagine the pain his parents are suffering but they must take comfort that to the people around the world who stand for what is right, he is a HERO! God bless Aaron and may he rest in peace. They should place a statue of him in the exact spot involved to show some respect and for the world to see.
