This is a reupload of a video first found on my main channel, Wonderlust - Adventures of a Wanderer ( / wonderlustwanderinwonder ). In this, the third episode of a 4 part series exploring the history of the American bison, its near extinction, its rescue, and its future, I tell the story of how despite overwhelming odds, the bison was rescued from extinction by those who deeply cared for the animal.
Our story takes us to Yellowstone National Park and to a lone canyon deep in Texas.

There were also a small herd or two of buffalo in Canada who survived the slaughter you described in this video. Do you address the history of these animals elsewhere? I definitely learned a lot from this video here, thanks!

they really do feel like an animal that should have gone extinct but somehow just managed to hold on. like weren't these things hunted practically on par with mammoths and stuff?

Yup, so much a living ice age creature... it's the sound that really sells it for me. If you're ever around a bison herd, you just hear this chorus of these deep, deep grunting sounds. Totally ancient.
