- Why do we ever stop playing and creating? With charm and humor, celebrated Korean author Young-ha Kim invokes the world's greatest artists to urge you to unleash your inner child -- the artist who wanted to play forever. (Filmed at TEDxSeoul.)

On a side note, for those of you wanting to learn Korean. This man speaks in a very proper and casual tone. I recommend this video to those of you trying to learn Korean as well.
"You have to run fast so the devil can't catch up" That's the key.
I can't thank you enough Young-ha Kim.
Your appealing thoughts killed the Art Devil- that used to creep around me all the time.
I I love art, teach Graphic Design to high school students but was not able to convince myself to believe in Art because of Devil of Reasoning with all those magical questions "what for, why for".
For the past two weeks I have been watching videos, reading articles and discussing about "why art is important for human society", and nothing could satisfy my monstrous questions.
But I found my answer in your video. "Art is not FOR anything" and this key thought opened up all the locking questions.
and now I know I wasn't getting answer because my questions were wrong.
I was comparing Art with other professions while it's beyond comparison.
There was an urgent need to be honest whether I believe in, what I ask students in the classroom.
I usually don't write comments on videos I watch, but I realize how important it is, to show gratitude to such detangling thoughts.
So thank you so much for sharing your ideas. Best!
I respect you so much
since I read your comment.
I think that
your comment is
as graceful as
young-ha-kim's saying in a lecture.
Sadly I have never exchanged
opnion with my teacher
In the term of high school.
I'm a korean
and I'm a freshman in high school.
I think korean education
is focused on building knowledge
rather than building character.
So i always have to discuss with myself
owing to misjudgement
coming from my ignorance.
and I have only one friend in school!
-it's not something to brag about-😂
The only way
to explore the world to me is
to read the book
such as topic about humunities
or to watch the video
that is informative
or to discuss with myself..😭
but i think it is overwhemingly
important process in our life
(Such as anything
that can upgrade
our vision about the world)
Anyway, I really respect you
as a good teacher who I yearned.
But, of course,
the reality is not passing
the way that i want.
so i want to explore the world
as a way that i discuss with myself
or watch the video or read the book.
But i think the world tends to like
apparent thing-such as a practical thing-
rather than a vertual image
-such as anything we call
"What you do is absurd" or
"What for" or "Why for"-
But innovation in
science, mathmetics, etc
is began with a vertual image.
Innovator such as invetor
is to do thing that someone called
"strange!", "stupid!" and "time waste".
Although
Paradigm can be changed at any time,
Most of people tend to like
a pracical person rather than
a creative person-such as artist-..
Difference
between 'practical'
and 'creative' might be small
But, if there is no 'practical' person
or no 'creative' person in whole world,
The world possibly
can no longer develop
or The world is no longer
functionig properly..
Because
A pracical thing is already discovered
By someone called an artist
But A creative thing
isn't yet discovered by anyone.
In the result,
There is a matter of timing
rather than there is
Presence of existence
or there is None of existence.
Do you understand what i said?
Then you are an excellent human!
Not only does no one
understand what i'm saying,
People around me don't even care..
Anyway,
I think this video will possibly give
the most important thing
to everyone like you and me!
I don't good at English well
But if you read my comment
and find something that is
really important to you,
I think i'll be very grateful to you!
Thank you for listening to my comment.
I hope everything goes well..
this was such an important speech for me. i love art but i could never imagine myself majoring in any kind of art. whether it is writing drawing or acting. bc the jobs are low paid. And this speech showed me that I still could do art. that i could be two different people
It's not even in a language I understand, had it watch it with the subtitles but I'm so glad I watched it. One of the best speeches on art and creativity. So moved!
One of the most inspirational a have come across.
강의하시는분은 한국인인데 댓글에는 한국인이별로 안보이네...예술을 안하는데에는 여러가지 이유가 있겠지만 못할 이유는 없다는 걸 깨달았네요 참 좋은 강의 잘들었습니다.
Eternally glad I never quit or gave up art, despite the pressures and the hardships....
I now get paid to paint and animate, design and create all day long, and its good pay!
If there are inspiring artists out there keep fighting! It will be worth it in the long run!
One of the best lectures I've come across!
Probably, one of the best talks I've seen on TED.
This was excellent. A lecture I needed to hear.
As a designer, out of the 200 or so Tedtalks I have watched, this is my favorite.
as long as it's fun (and safe and healthy), it's art! It doesn't matter if it's "fine" or not. I do agree with you that art is everywhere and we always miss seeing it.
your art is a small flame in light that we all create
Very nice... I liked it when the speaker says about giving just few minutes to write about childhood experience.. Coz when given more time it spoils the artistic value in it.
I got a little bored half way through but I'm glad I stuck with it because I loved the whole "outrunning the art devil" thing. I search far and wide for good advice on creativity on the web and it's pretty difficult to find genuinely original/helpful advise.
Yeah! When i am free, i would practice what he said. Usually, I have jumped into next sentence before I finished the current sentence. But I feel I am being myself! At that moment, I feel the real existence of my mind, my heart, my soul! I really feel it! We have my mind locked too long, too hard, we need to free it from now on, and unleash the power at which ourselves must be extremely surprised at!
I would love to see more non-english TEDs. Hearing perspectives on ideas from other cultures is wonderful and fascinating!
That was fantastic! Young-ha Kim, you are my new hero. I suddenly feel like I understand something my brain has secretly known since I was kid. Thanks for the massive amounts of inspiration and motivation!
Damn right. Just because we can't speak to each other, doesn't mean that it's not a barrier for us to understand.
What's with these people crying about the subtitle??
We non-english speaking people never complain about western movies and stuff with subtitles.
Disgusting to see some lazy/ignorant people who think english is so superior that everyone has to speak english FOR THEM..
i speak spanish. Totally agree
at times perhaps, but many times it's inspired by the appreciation of love and truth or the realization of beauty in the al too often overlooked
Great talk and I really enjoyed it. I feel this doesn't just apply to the art world, or perhaps I may be confusing the definition of art but I think what he's said is applicable to other aspects of life including what we consider work, the idea that one can express their individuality through passion. And often the only thing that is required to start this process is to simply 'just do it' and get so into it, it's no longer about getting paid, or the fear of performing poorly but it's driven by pure interest and one's desire to express themselves.
What you say about wanting perfection I think is so true. I am frequently put off creative pursuits such as writing articles, stories or making videos (or writing a university essay) because I am a perfectionist, and want the end product to be completely perfect. Yet I'm fine with just posting thoughtful comments on the internet (e.g. youtube) because it's relative unimportance invokes less fear of non-perfection, and givesa sense of personal detachment and non-commitment from the final product.
THANK YOU!!! and yes it took awhile to get used to reading the captions and tuning out the funny language till i realised how the ones who dont speak english go thru that alot more than the english speaking people,, then i took in what the talk was about,,, thankyou,,, my inner actor, dancer, writer, poet, singer, musician, painter, cabinet maker, CREATOR,,,,,, IS VERY HAPPY :D,, we are gonna dance!!
FANTASTIC. Art IS the goal. FANTASTIC
I absolute loved this lecture and his way of explaining how art influences all and how it's for everyone. His works are very good so this made me like him even more. Thank you for this!!
Loved this talk!
Very inspiring, also kim young ha books are great 🌻 this talk was something else , even if you don't want to be an artist , this talk makes you one to be one 💖
brilliant speech, brilliant...
Proud to be a Korean to listen to a Korean person speaking in my language! Awesome!
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO SAY THIS and DAAMN this is 2013! Thank you!
Brilliant talk by the way. Humorous, intelligent, insightful, personal and relatable, all the things that make a TEDTalk great.
I think this is really relevant to Korean society, I guess that's why a Korean did this hah. He hit the nail right on the head.
I loved his speech! Ou would think it being in korean I would get frustrated but he have a way of drawing you in. My dad was an artist and I always thought that I wasn't good enough to draw. Now I'm so excited! I am going to buy a sketch book and nurture the artist within. Kids really do have the right philosophy when it comes to life! We as adults to often let fear, logic and status quo get in the way.
This video inspired me to do what I enjoy. Being an artist.
Excellent TED talk and one of my favorites.
This talk gave me a lot of ammo in my talks with my parents who believe I pursuit something pointless by being creative.
thanks for your comments Kelly. I'll take them in consideration.
This is beyond beautiful.
I am sorry for being pessimistic. Doing art is pure joy....I just want people to have a back up plan...so even if its artistic career first, that they try to prepare a back up career. That security may help avoid anxiety and stress later on. There are many people out there that just pursue art for art sake are happy. For me, I need to have choices. If you have choices you have control...so always give yourself good options. Best of luck to you. I hope you find the best path for yourself.
I don't think he is asking everyone to pursue art as a career or become the next Picasso or Beethoven. He's stating that we should still take part in self expression and pursue our creative interests.
Great speech. TED has been good so far, and even better with other language than English.
Truer words have never been spoken :)
This video is a great wake-up call for parents everywhere.
The amount of complains about subtitles is disturbing, the content is really brillant despite the fact I had to pause once in awhile. I totally agree with Kim, I'm 3rd year electrical engineering student and I bought electrical piano and started learing it about a year ago. I gotta say that it was good decision (these aint cheap) and it doesn't matter when you start but how much time you are willing to devote to the subject. If you have an urge to do something new, just do it :) .
Wow. Wonderful talk! So encouraging!
That was in response to you saying that the point of a video is not to hear or see but just to "relay information to your brain", and I said that that doesn't just happen magically which is a perfectly fine statement considering that you made it sound as if it does work like that.
I know I'm being picky, but I miss it when I could just listen to a ted talk and do other work alongside it... not stop everything I'm doing to read captions...
but that isn't saying anything about the talk itself, which was actually very well done in my opinion
Just do it
thank you young ha kim
im proud that im korean
This is a normal speed for Korean speech.. he did speed up a little when he read off the paper but for the majority part of it he's not talking fast for a Korean :)
Great speech
Love hearing this language, more from Seoul please.
just do it
THANKU YOUNG HA KIM
Just Do It!!!
I believe TED is an act alltogether, I understand what you say but stopping work once in a while to watch something like this is important. It's just what the talk means in some way. Other culture TED are important too, I would love to see other language TED's besides the "1st world" ones.
Great speech. Just do it.
I really don't care much about that, it's about the message in the end and I'm simply stating that people will find this video less attractive because they have to read subtitles in stead of just having to listen. I'll end up watching the video when I feel like reading, there's just a bigger chance that I and many others will end up skipping it. You get my point, right?
Incredibly inspirational!
if you leave this video just because of having to read subtitles, YOU will miss out.
Another amazing speech!
"Just do it!" Great advice!
Great talk! Very inspiring! This reminds me of those who have been working hard busting their asses off to get a diploma/degree/masters/phd and their only dream in life is to 'get a job'. I mean, they have been enslaved by teachers/lecturers their whole life and their dream is to continue to be enslaved by a boss? To have a little artist in us is the way to go, I am a school teacher but my life doesn't stop here as, deep inside, I'm pursuing two arts (writing and magic). The adventure continues!
I'm very used to reading subtitles, since English is not my first languages. But that guy talks very fast. Whenever my eyes stray away from the screen for even a second, I'm tempted to rewind. So I can read what I missed. Don't misunderstand I watch anime in Japanese with subtitles, no problem. He's just a very fast talker. :)
Set the speed to 0.5 + mute + turn on subtitles = good speech.
I love him
this was such an amazing speech..just wow...powerful =)
Such a Great speech! Just do it.
this was an awesome lecture. I'm just reading one of his boks in Korean. He is a very good writer
Great talk! Thank you for your words!
This is the first Speech that I can remember listening to, that doesn't involve a english speaker, as such it was the first one that I actually watched the whole video of too.
Really the speech is a lttle more deeper than most speeches about "Been an artist now!", and because of how fast he talks, you dont really loose focus.
Im glad Ted is going strong in Taiwan? Pretty good speech just very predictable.
Amazing amazing amazingg
amazing speech. really loved it.
Ah! That explains it. Thank you.
Good point!
Amazing inspiring speech!
I love art, i put it off for ten years but im back on the horse again..but thinking of reenlisting blah!! ...
brilliant. thx a lot for sharing your experience
These are the kinds of videos that need millions of views. I feel inspired to do something artistic. :3
Daebak! Great talk. I really enjoyed this one. Youngha covered a lot of ground, but it all tied together well.
정말 감동이야. 이 영상을 볼 때 악마가 와서 "그거 해서 뭐할려고 그래?" 이렇게 물어봤어요😂 진짜 죽을 것 같아요😢
why doesn't this video have more views??
I'm going to write a novel tonight :D
Saumil Sachdeva This is a bit late but how did the novel go? 😂🤔🙄
I hope you did pursue your dream too.
excellent speech!!
truly amazing and inspiring talk
At 13:39 I stopped the video and started writing about a devil coming after me and I just wouldn't stop. Two hours after and I've written a lot and it's becoming a book. I've always thought about writing a book, but I keep being blocked, because I always want every bit of it to be perfect. What I have written is a mess, but everything I thought of is written down :D So happy!
Very true indeed
kamdung ul padasumnida! Great talk--thanks for sharing!
Great talk
keep going your onto something
예술가가 되자, 당장!
Be an artist, right now!
Inspiring!
If there was no subtitles the only words I would have understood only 10 words in the whole video. T T But this is so nice. I think it really can help people. I'm pretty sure it helped me.
I wish I could adjust the playback speed. Excellent talk!
WOW.just wow. the relation how lying is a form of storytelling where we use our imagination.loved this :)
awesome talk, love this language
This guy was great! I'm going to log off and draw now!
Very interresting talk. Thanks.
This was filmed in Korea with koreans as the intended audience ,if the conference was done in english there's likely people in the audience who wouldn't understand it.There's a few international ted talks done in languages other than english, they just never get uploaded to this channel but other ones,in fact this video was already uploaded on another channel, it seems TED wanted to share it with an english speaking audience and decided to add subtitles and uploaded it here
That was... wow.
Awesome to see TED in other languages than English.
Good ideas should not have to be spoken in English to get their message across.
Really inspiring :) Thank you for the video.
