having cleaned out the homes of my in-laws and my uncle--all who had long, secure, happy lives, I vowed to never have our daughters go through that process for our things and have been watching your videos to keep going! We filled our home like a family would but both girls have moved on to their next chapter. I was surprised at how much the "stuff" weighed me down even tho it was hard to give up some hobby supplies, my buffet/dinner party/big family dinner things....once donated, I didn't miss them! thank you.

I was Monica from Friends... everything organized on the outside, but behind a closet is junk filled to the brim. Ever since, I watched your videos regarding minimalism, I have purged and de-cluttered so many unnecessary things. And before, I was a spontaneous shopper; but now, I am very thoughtful when buying things -- such as clothes, coffee mugs, or makeup. Becoming a minimalist does really help -- not just with saving money, but relieving stress. Thanks for your inspiration and motivation!

It's noon in northern NY state. I'm still on my decluttering journey. Stuck in paper and establishing routines.
The things I want to do more of is Bible study, spending time w/ my sweetie and making art.

I'm watching this on my lunch break at work and all I want to do is go home and declutter! I really want to just get rid of most of my wardrobe as I don't love a lot of the items anymore (and I have too much), but I don't have the money to replace everything. Plus, I think personal style grows with you, and should be curated over time. Love the video, as usual

It's 745am Bellingham, Washington, USA. I appreciate how you emphasize that minimalism is different for each person depending on what's important to them (my art is important). Your suggestion of working a small section at a time worked well for me since I got overwhelmed trying to do everything at once.

Hey girl! Watching this at 9pm in London :-) So glad I'm not the only one who always remembers what they wore in the company of others - really not sure how (or why?) I can remember that, but it's a real hindrance on choosing an outfit to wear when you're seeing friends. Less is definitely more, and after culling my wardrobe to about 1/3 of it's size a couple weeks ago, I think I need to do it again! Thanks for the inspiration, I always look forward to your videos - never stop creating x

Hey Rachel, it's 20.53 in Germany :) Love your channel. I discovered your videos while looking for quinoa recipes haha. However all your videos on weight-loss have resonated so strongly with me and your minimalism series has changed my life quite a bit lately, I feel so much more comfortable in my apartment, my bathroom and my kitchen after de-cluttering and getting rid of unnecessary possessions that don't make me happier. So thanks for that and keep up the inspiring work :) Max
(also you look particularly beautiful in this video!)

Rachel please make a video on your history w minimalism! And how do you decide on and stick to a personal style because what you said about repeating outfits hits so close to home! I'm exactly that way 😩 I've looked into creating a capsule wardrobe where you basically own a couple of things in a similar style/ colour so that everything matches but idk if I can commit to it. Thanks Rachel, you're amazing! 💖

What's really important for me after decluttering is not risking to do the same mistakes as before, so I analyze the decluttered pile, ask myself "why isn't this good for me (anymore) and set some rules to buy less and better in the future. So far it's working! I no longer buy much stuff on line just because it seems cute and cheap and if I DO buy on line, it's for "safe" articles like T-shirts, sneakers, petite jeans... Ciao.

Ever since i discovered minimalism i have this urge to throw out everything in my room :))) i feel suffocated by stuff and because i live with my parents i can only get rid of so much. i feel like I'll be more free from things once move out. i plan on taking only things i love or need. both of my parents have hoarding tendencies, not out of control but they are "collectors" and keep so much unnecessary nicknacks, bits and pieces "just in case" and i have to respect their decisions, it's their house after all. i definitely inherited this behavior but I recently realised that all the stuff weighs me down. i really love your minimalism series, i'm trying to slowly declutter my room when i have time and i feel like they also mentally prepare me for my new home when i move out (next summer *fingers crossed*) ❤❤❤

I think we have a pretty similar approach to minimalism. I'm not aiming to live out of a backpack, I like having my own home with nice things but just less of them and only the things I love and use. Right now it's 2:30pm and I'm sitting making a list of everything in my kitchen so I can decide with Steven which of these things will be getting shipped to Australia with us in 2 months and which things will be getting donated / thrown away when we have to move. Then I just have to repeat this process for every room in our house, lol!

I'm going to keep the term 'Core Items' in mind moving forward with my decluttering journey as that's certainly something that had been floating through my mind. Like why do I lust after buying high heels if I only wear them approx twice a year? Or latch onto the latest liquid lipstick trend when I know that my preference is traditional lipstick? My true aim is having items that truly work for me and not what I felt I needed to buy through just wants rather than quality needs. Thanks for the video - it was great food for thought! X 12:18PM in Lancashire, England :)

I am watching this at 1.10am whilst cleaning my desk. I randomly searched for 'How to be a minimalist' while trying to find the best way to clean the house (it's pretty messy). I did say that I was going to go to bed at midnight but listening to you has definately inspired me to get rid of 'stuff'. We have too much 'stuff'. And yes, coming home to a clean house is so much more relaxing than a messy one that you have to move things just to put a plate down. I was finding myself using small plates for food as I couldn't be bothered moving stuff around to sit down to eat at my desk. Thank you!!

It is already a lot better now, but I still have a hard time with things that people gave me. Anyways, your video's rock. Rachel it would be great to hear about items (decor, work-related, personal, etc) that you own you feel are more functional/useful to you as a minimalist. In a sense items you've found to be more essential or worth investing in since becoming a minimalist. It may help those of us transitioning to know where to start or things to keep in mind. Also would like to see options sold internationally for those of us not in AUS!

I remember things by outfits as well! I mention it sometimes like "last time I saw you in wore this" or "I remember this happened because I was wearing this and you were wearing that" All my friends think I'm nuts! What I found is most people don't remember stuff like that and it doesn't matter!

5/13/2020 day 6 of 60 for my second go-round with you. be well be safe today I cleared off a surface area ... both around it AND under it (all purely clear now).. and better-arranged George's massive collection of hobbies. NOTE: found earthquake saved water gallon plastics in the hobby area and one of them had LEAKED! after all these months I AM SO SO SO GLAD I found this out to save the soaked box items (the items had been wrapped in plastic are OK. the box soaked had to be thrown out. THANKS RACHEL for letting us continue OUR JOURNEY to be better caring for all our objects that might get ruined from spilled water that we didn't know about.

I would love to see a video about your minimalism journey! Because life is about so much more than possessions... yet exploring our choices in possessions and our relationship to them are an excellent opportunity for growth and self discovery. But I wanted to share my perspective when you advised to be logical instead of emotional about decluttering. It's certainly not bad advice, but I have many times decluttered in the last 20 years, usually being very logical and almost strict with myself... and it didn't stick. Now that I'm trying this new method, which is very intuitive based, I find I can process the emotions I have about items without being ruled by them. I believe I'm going to be a lot less likely to revert this time around. Just in the last few months since I started, I'm amazed at how my attitude towards stuff has changed. I haven't been struggling with temptation, and it's almost a relief to be able to say NO to almost everything that's available out there. So maybe there's a way to be both logical and emotional for greater success :)

Hey Rachel, I am watching this at 10:12am haha. I feel so much better once I have culled items, I am the type of person who will cull a specific group of items all in one go, for example, I cull clothes for myself, my husband, and my kids all at once, and I usually do this every 3 months. The thing I have trouble culling is my drawers, which is funny because they are basically full of random things that I never use, but I have trouble throwing it out haha. Thats something I really need to work on.
Anyway this was another great video, would love to see an updated Makeup collection to see what items you love enough to keep, and or keep repurchasing. Have a wonderful week, and can't wait to see your next video :D

I recently started with a "rule" that I set up for myself, which is that if I purchase any new clothes I have to remove something similar from my wardrobe, for example if I would buy a new skirt, I have to get rid of one skirt that I already own. It's working really well for me and i think it's a good way for me to build up a new and more sustainable wardrobe without making it larger. I have a lot of old clothes that I don't feel comfortable in anymore but I just wear them because I don't really have anything else to put on, a lot of it is worn out and comes from cheap brands, I'm a student so I don't have so much money but now I try to buy things with better quality, just one piece once I while when I find something perfect until I have a wardrobe that I feel comfortable with and that is more wearable.

LOVE this video! Very inspiring! I love how you compare eatting sugar and shopping both giving a quick high that makes you crave more. So true!
You are so stunning! I usually don't like dark lipsticks, don't think they suit many people, but this lip colours is absolutely beautiful on you! You pull it off perfectly! Please can you let us know the lip colour you're wearing? :)
    Love your lace top too!
New subscriber, def keen to hear more minimalism videos from you :)

For me, it's definitely been the easiest to cut down little by little. I would take clothes out of my closet as I felt comfortable with the fact that I don't actually need them. I sort of did 3 "big" de clutters. Each was a bit harder but I'm feeling great that I can now get rid of a giant dresser that takes up space and looks out of place because I can fit it all in my closet comfortably.
As far as makeup, I took out piece by piece and hid them in a box until I was able to use everything in my makeup bag regularly and then felt comfortable getting rid of the box because I knew I didn't need it anymore

Hey Rachel, thank you for this very inspiring video! :) I love your minimalism series, especially because you underline that this is an individual process where everyone has to decide by herself what amount of stuff is okay to have. By the way, I´m watching this at 15:39 in the afternoon with a nice cup of cocoa since it is raining like crazy :( Lots of greetings from Germany :)

Please share your journey to minimalism and when/how you came across it. thanks for the great video!. I can totally relate to not purchasing something immediately and waiting until you know that u absolutely need to have it as that it will fulfill a certain area in your life.

I finding listing what you really want and then reviewing that when your situation changes means I only buy what I am long term satisfied with. I find the easiest way I accumulate stuff is when I am both bored and frustrated with how I am and living at once.
