I have both these models in these steels, (and also the LW Rex121 Sage. It came first then the G10 Rex121 dropped at my local dealer, so I just had to pick it up too. One can never have too much Rex121!!😏). I also have a PM2 in Maxamet. All very high wear resistant steels. This is a great comparison vid! I was very interested in this vid, and have now subscribed for more. Thank you for sharing😊
Nice… I have both Sage 5 Rex 121’s and the 15V G10 Para 3 will be here today, looking forward to it. PS I did a sharpening live on the Rex 121 if you’re interested in how sharpening went. It was easy peasy.
I am definitely subscribed. Not sure why so many don't, but it's pretty typical to get that small percentage of viewers subbing. I am more of a long form guy. I know the shorts are supposed to bring the subscribers. Keep it up, and hopefully, the subscriptions will come rolling in.
@@Ken_Faulkner thanks for being here Ken! I want to make as much long form content while maintaining a high quality. For sure uploading a long form video every Monday! And I know the subs will come in if I keep putting in the work
15v with bbb heat treat is much tougher than rex121 and also easier to sharpen while still having very good edge retention. Rex121 doesn’t glass out like Maxamet but it’s also even more brittle. I have a Sage 5 like yours as well as a Manix 2 and Sage 5 in Maxamet and both 15v Para 3s. I love all of them, but you just can’t beat the sweet edge you can get on the 15v or that awesome stonewash. I absolutely hate satin finish, especially the belt grind. I do wish Shawn Houston’s 15v would come out in some of their Taichung knives. A Sage 5 stonewashed in brown G10 would be the perfect 3 inch blade non-stainless knife! I share the same sediments about how much more ergonomic the Sage is compared to the Para 3.
@@BarNunBladesTaichung has the best quality out of the Spyderco manufacturers IMO, but it just looks cheap to me to have that very rough belt grind and call it “satin.”
@@BarNunBladesI subscribed. I think it was a good idea for a young channel to compare these newer knives in these steels. Many of the older testers haven’t compared these to each other. Please do another comparison after you put an edge or two on each knife. The factory edges are not great. My Rex 121 Sage LW couldn’t shave arm hair out of the box. I have put a few edges on my Maxamet knives and the difference in sharpness and cutting performance was ridiculous when compared to the factory edge. With my use, I haven’t had to sharpen 15v or Rex 121 yet. Maybe in the future, it would be cool to see a three way shootout between the mentioned steels. Just a few ideas. Good luck with the channel. 👍
@ it was a good video just kinda driving me nuts with the paper😂 do the test again with a new edge that you put on, and try to get the paper cutting down and you’ll be set.
@BarNunBlades I don't, I just beat them at work. I'm too much a barbarian to use any of these steels, cruwear and magnacut for me. I like the balance s90v has but I can't use it.
Fair enough lol. So far maganacut is my favorite steel but I love how s90v and Rex 45 sharpen. MagnaCut is a nicely balanced steel and it’s available for good prices nowadays
@BarNunBlades Probably the best overall rounded steel is magnacut despite it having half the edge retention of maxamet. Cruwear is performs similarly but can rust without care, slightly tougher than magnacut. If you value edge retention more these aren't for you. The trick is to find the toughness you need for your daily routine and go no further than that to keep all the edge retention you can.
@BarNunBlades Looking at it in terms of composition though s90v is more special than people talk about. Not much toughness but it does have more than it should to be so hard.
Skip to 4:53 if you just want to see the edge retention test and don’t want to hear my thoughts on how these models stack up!

15v for me, seems to be a little tougher than Rex 121

I wish spyderco did more knives in stonewashed finish. Not a big fan of their satin finish
That’s fair, the finish on this sage is pretty incredible though. But for the most part their satin isn’t very special
