    I've had my Civil War-style (poncho) gum blanket for 30 years. Still in great shape and ALWAYS between my blankets and the ground!

    I have often debated about a gum blanket for a ground cloth. Didn’t realize they weighed so little! Thanks dan

    • @edsiefker1301
      @edsiefker1301 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      30oz is lightweight?

    • @the_orange_shepherd6938
      @the_orange_shepherd6938 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ed Siefker yea I mean less than two pounds for its versatility. Heck weighs less than my canvas pants.

    • @edsiefker1301
      @edsiefker1301 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seems a little too versatile. A poncho and woobie would come out roughly the same, and then you have insulation under your lean-to.

    • @the_orange_shepherd6938
      @the_orange_shepherd6938 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ed Siefker I guess I understand your point, in bad rain I’ve had issue with a poncho as a ground cloth plus it can’t be both. These are nice I think. I plan on using it as part of a bed roll to help with keeping dry while hiking and makes more sense than a single use of a dry bag. Too each their own. I figured the vulcanized canvas would weigh a lot more

    Found this material at a Jo-Anns fabric store years ago, made a set of saddlebags for my mountain bike and got enough to make a ground clothe and a tarp, didn't know that it was going to be so useful, glad I decided a long time ago to try it out an use it.

    • @tracegates8841
      @tracegates8841 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi John, what was the fabric / cloth called when you boight it off the bolt? Is it rubberized on one side or is it like oil cloth? I am going to look for it.

  • @GuntherRommel
    @GuntherRommel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Yeah, using it as a drop cloth under your hammock/cot so your feet stay dry in the morning is a simple creature comfort that most people never consider. Always hated crawling out of my sack in the morning on maneuvers and getting wet feet, until I started laying my groundsheet down to keep'em dry. Dan, I laugh every time I watch one of your videos. Keep it up.

    • @tracegates8841
      @tracegates8841 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you lay it down as you rise in the morning, or is it down overnight. Curious if it collects moisture at dewpoint, as I expect.

    • @edsiefker1301
      @edsiefker1301 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I change socks in the hammock, and my feet go right in my shoes as I stand up. Not a problem.

    Gum blankets have kept me considerably more comfortable than if I had not had them. I re-enact with the 46th VA and spend those weekends sleeping next to the fire with two gum blankets, one to sleep on and one to cover me if it rains keeping my wool blankets dry as I sleep. My haversacks are treated with the traditional tar type coating also. I can also attest to no matter how dry it is when I pull that gum blanket up after the weekend it is wet underneath every time

    I use a piece of tyvek like they use under the siding in home construction. Waterproof and super light. A little noisy until it breaks in and softens up a little. But I've been really happy with it.

    • @tracegates8841
      @tracegates8841 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      is tyvek stranded material, like a tarp?

    how well does that rubber coating hold up? any issues dragging that rubber side down vs cloth down?

    • @shenanigansIRA
      @shenanigansIRA 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can say my rubber gum blanket was my first and is still in way better condition than my tarred one. It has a few holes where my bed roll caught on fire but the holes never got bigger or anything. I can’t say I’d recommend dragging anything with it but if you had to I’m sure it would hold up for a good long wile

    Just wondering, cuz 72" by 34" is kinda too small for me. It would be great to get one that's double that... 72" by 68 to 72"... That would be cool!

    I received mine in the mail today. I have sent an email to Coalcracker and am hoping to be able to report that Dan has wonderful customer service and will make things right. There are Many spots where the rubber does not cover the canvas at all. Definitely not something I would have knowingly spent $50 plus shipping on. Hopefully a fluke...

    • @heidigrx
      @heidigrx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you plan to buy - the one I just received has Many small spots where the rubber does not cover the canvas. Following is my response from Dan. I personally would not have paid $50 for this (grommets are cheap also - "time period"?) Your opinions may differ:
      Unfortunately, that is just how the blankets are produced. The company in which we source the blankets from primarily makes them for re-enactors and is not concerned with imperfections as the original blankets were similar. Due to this we have description on the website indicating that the blankets may have imperfections/blemishes/etc. Although there are these imperfections on the blankets it would not at all affect stopping moisture going to you while sleeping on it or sitting on it.
      Dan

    Not sure I get the love affair. A modern poncho is much lighter, has grommets and allows you to protect things from rain. Plus it's bigger. The thing he sells is tiny.
    BTW . . . . a large garbage bag makes a great ground cloth.
    Sorry. I don't comprendo this unless some people just have more money than brains.
    But . . . . if you're 100% determined to buy one of these then know that the Civil War reenactor community doesn't like the cheap "painted blankets" coming from overseas. They prefer real rubber. I don't know what the heck this is . . . . but do some homework before opening the wallet.
