    you always want to loosen the fill plug first i case you cant get it lose and now you have emptied all the fluid out and cant get the new fluid in.

    Great Video as usual Tommy, tech tip... I always take the fill plug off first no matter what fluid Im changing, trans, diffs etc. Because if you drain it and you cant get the fill plug out for whatever reason your in trouble! Also, weather is getting nice.... soon we can get the cars out there. Be safe!

    I also need that fluid transfer pump. Nice video. Good tips for changing transmission oil. Same process for most manual transmission BMWs. On the older ones the transmission sometimes has a label indicating what oil to use. The hardest part for me, is getting under the car as the car is quite low. Wish I had a hoist in my garage

    You should probably do this with the car level, the tilt might make you add too much or too little. Also, you should start the car, row through the gears, and then go back under and fill it until it starts overflowing again while the car is running to make sure you have the correct amount in.

    • @TommyLGarage
      @TommyLGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The car has to be level when filling the trans for it to have the correct amount of oil

    • @TommyLGarage
      @TommyLGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. This way I was allowed to fill more

    • @ZelenKai
      @ZelenKai 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@TommyLGarage The point of being level is so you don't over or under fill the transmission. Having the car at an angle means you most likely did just that. Just as you don't want to over or under fill motor oil, you don't want to do that in your transmission either.

    • @miken.1809
      @miken.1809 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZelenKai I get what your are saying, however engine oil is most critical for correct fill volume largely because it uses pumps and the engine to circulate it and therefore volume impacts pressure. This is not true for a manual trans where the fluid is simply a bath.

    • @ZelenKai
      @ZelenKai 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@miken.1809 Yes, the transmission fluid just sits and lubricates but having too much or too little also affects lubrication as the moving parts will whip up more fluid or not have enough to lubricate. As for if it is "ok" to over or underfill, you can probably get away with it if it's not too much over or under - that doesn't mean it's right.
      If he's going to make a video on how to change transmission fluid then it should be text book correct otherwise other people may follow a bad example. This isn't some bolt on cosmetic part that may have some various ways to install it. There's only one way to do this correctly.

    • @thisisrob8750
      @thisisrob8750 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@TommyLGarage No nope. BMW mechanic in Vancouver B.C. Canada. Car has to be level. If the front end is lifted you are able to put more fluid in than should be in there. Easy to overfill that way. You say that way I was able to fill more. No you don't want that. You want the right amount as designed by the engineers. The fill bolt was designed by BMW so that when the car is level and you add fluid when it starts to flow out your at perfect level. Sorry I'm not trying to be rude just annoyed me because commentator was actually right in this case.
