@@AzulUnlimited December is always tough because of the holidays and wrapping up the business year. Maybe a week in the first two? End of January/beginning of February is always nice. Get the end of the year out of the way, get the new year started and then take some time to relax.
Hi full-time Dive Instructor/Family man/Home Owner here in Florida. I think the major issue that summizes all of your points is: Scuba is in a 'race to the bottom.' (Pun intended.) How cheap can we make courses? How fast can we teach classes? $99 OW Course! How can anyone make money off of that!? Charge a premium, provide quality Instruction and service and make mad money. In addition, the Industry is flooded with 'will work for experience' Instructors who increase that insurance cost you mentioned, especially here in the States!
Hi!!! Love your channel 💙 And yes to all your points! It is so crazy to see how many people continue to shoot themselves in the foot and drive this industry down. Every single IDC we taught, we pushed people to not go with that 'work for experience' BS. There are so many things to fix... It feels like we need a giant reset button. Thank you for watching. I so SO appreciate it!
Thank you Sara, I am a Course Director and appreciate your candid and caring message. We operate a Dive Charter Boat in Monterey, Ca. You have expressed some great aspects of the industry. Thank you
oh how fun! I would love to connect with you. I'll be spending some time up that way in a couple of months. If you'd like, email me azulunlimited@gmail.com thanks for watching!
Hi Sarah, I'm of an older generation & only started SCUBA at 60. But in my 20s & 30s I was a street musician living in a van, a bigger van, & then a 30 foot bus, as more children "came into " my wife & I's life. All that to say mobile living can work, (including relationships). So here's wishing you all the best as you go forward. Ps. I got my certification in cold water, (& do most of my diving in a dry suit in Europe) but when I can get to warmer climes everything is Soooooo easy, the freedom of movement, the dexterity, just a JOY.
Love this!! Yes, it's all about being adaptable to the moment and what's coming up in life. Sounds like you're in a good place. Thanks so much for commenting. I really appreciate it.
Good luck to you. I feel you undersell your ability to market yourself, your ability to reach clientele through TH-cam is significant. I know I'd enjoy taking a course from you... When you decide to return to being an instructor I'm sure there will be many who will line up to train with you.
Aww thank you so much. Definitely not trying to undersell myself. I just know how much work goes into setting up a client base and right now I really need a consistent paycheck to build myself up again after the last two years. I hope to teach you or dive with you in the future and thank you for watching :)
What a honest video. I just found your channel and this is the first video I watch, thank you so much for making content about SCUBA diving. I switched career from software development consultant to SCUBA diving instructor (following my true passion). I did my IDC end of December 2019 and then the pandemic hit 2020 couldn't dive and 2021 I decided to open my business as an independent instructor and my idea is to get my own customers through social media but I've found it quite hard to get costumers through this.I'm still on it and my plan is to make content about SCUBA diving and marine conservation this new year. I feel the diving industry is sinking but I remain optimistic and will do my best to get new customers into this wonderful world. Greetings from Santa Marta, Colombia !
Thanks for watching! I hear you. It's not a simple world to navigate. I wish you the best in all of this. The industry will recover, it's just going to take time and in the meantime, some creativity in the content creation space. Good luck!
Just saw this. Your "I've never not renewed" thing really resonated with me. I did the same with my EMT license a while back. I was hemorrhaging money on licensure, equipment, and travel as a volunteer, but it hit me when I applied with 50 other candidates for one part-time minimum wage EMT opening that I needed to do something else. Good luck with the new adventure. Sometimes "not renewing" is the way to go!
Excuse me while I fangirl :) Thanks for watching! I learn so much for you all. I would absolutely love to dive together and in the meantime if you ever want to do a TH-cam collaboration, I would be so so stoked.
It’s good to hear your views on being a scuba instructor it’s a very challenging job that takes all of your time up and takes away any kind of social life. If it becomes a issue and you find it difficult to deal with then change is good. We all need changes in our lives and our priorities change we do jobs like this to provide a living wage but once the job is all you have then it’s no longer feasible to do. I wish you the best in your future endeavours I’m sure you will do well for i you self life is at times short live every day to it’s fullest and you will enjoy life so much more. I love watching you TH-cam videos take care and be safe.
I can relate all too well to most of what you say in this video, it’s almost scary… I’ve been in the dive industry for 15 years plus, with 2 gaps in between, one due to COVID 19. I just started a new job 2 months ago that was supposed to get me back me back into diving, but sadly enough I’m beginning to regret this move already: first, with the pandemic still dominating the international travel industry in a very destructive way, I hardly get enough diving to do to actually enjoy it. But, maybe even more importantly, I have to admit that never before did I feel the loneliness you talk about as strongly as these days, having experienced living around my family again for the past 1.5 years. Plus, I’m getting older too… So no idea for how long I will accept this situation. By the way, I met Aitor as part of the Course Director team when I got my staff instructor certification in Playa del Carmen - good memories 😎
The diving world is so small! Sorry to hear about the challenges you're experiencing with all this mess in the world. At least you know you're not alone in those feelings. That always helps me. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. appreciate you :)
I understand. Been instructor since 2008 but started out in cold waters of Scotland so defo makes it easier going cold to tropics instead of other way.😊 Hope it works out for you and your new adventure.
Thanks a lot! And yes, absolutely easier to go from cold to warm. That's what I've always told my students who I certified here in California. It's all about perspective and experience :)
Thank you so much for your video. This situation will never change our love for the ocean, but it's something all diving professionals I know are struggling with. My boyfriend and I are out here in Indonesia after our jobs as cruise directors got suspended. We too are taking this time to figure things out. TOTALLY get you about the stability thing. Living in your van indeed sounds cozy and stable!...not like us, constantly moving from one homestay to the next!! Exhausting. Anyways, let's home these coming months we can gain more clarity and set our compasses in the direction that's right for us all :)
oh man... my heart goes out to you guys. Indo has been hit so hard with all this stuff. I hope you're able to find stability soon and get back to the things you love.
Nice video. I was thinking the same too, especially here in Florida since scuba instructors are everywhere, and is not a high paying job. Now I just got OWD certified plus Nitrox level2 (40%) my goal is to become a master diver, then get my 6 pack captain license and open my own diving charter business to take people snorkeling and diving in Florida Keys . stay safe :)
Sounds like a great plan! Do you mean Divemaster? That's the first level of professional diver (and one of the best courses!) Hit me up when you start operating. I would love to go to florida :D
Just retired, and want to become an instructor now that I have time to devote to scuba. I'm in pretty good shape at 65, but the water sure does take a lot out of you. I have food for thought now. Probably go through the training anyway because doing nothing is difficult too. Just found your channel this morning. With my job, I was a full time rv'r for the past 10 years. I can relate to the freedom aspect.
Amazing! Happy retirement :) the nice thing is that you won't be relying on the job as a primary source of income so you can be picky about the work you do. I've gotten to train a handful of retirees turned scuba instructors and they have had a lot of fun with it.
Thanks for the insight into your decision! I also noticed the sound quality - Was this recorded on the mic in the description or via your wireless headphones?
oops, i forgot to update that! This was done with my airpods. I go back and forth all the time. Here's our affiliate link if you need a new pair of headphones (and nice mic) amzn.to/3nwveQV
Well, Sarah… leaders need breaks every now and then. And you ARE a leader. You will figure this out soon and we will all still be around to jump in the water with you. Happy new year!
You've got yourself another subscriber. As someone who is looking to get into teaching as a part time gig, and maybe think about making it full time, this has been a really useful insight. Just telling it as it is. No frills. Now I need to check out the rest of your uploads ☺️
Hi . You did a very good job in explaining your reasons. You are correct in what you have said. I have been teaching for 26 years and also have been fortunate enough to work with a couple of shops that did well. My teaching was not my day job and it did take a lot of time during the season. Was lucky enough to have a good job and only hoped to break even with costs and expenditures at the end of the year. The most I tach now is a couple of tech courses and IDC's. As a master instructor I understand what you have said . Just keep diving if not teaching. HAPPY NEW YEAR and SAFE DIVING
That's a great way to do it. Thanks for watching. I'm absolutely gonna keep diving and making videos. Maybe I'll see you underwater someday soon! Mexico?
I just wanna say that your video's have been super helpful. Three months ago I became an instructor and this video just makes so much sense! One thing that I always find weird is how negative long time instructors can be about teaching but this video gives a very honest point of view without bashing any industry or organisations. All the best and your van looks awesome!
Thanks a lot! Yes, unfortunately a lot of instructors get a bad attitude after too many challenges or just unmet expectations. I hope you enjoy your time with it. It's a wonderful experience. My van, Ariel 🧜🏻♀️, is awesome 😎 thanks for noticing hehehe
Sarah. I applaud you being so honest. Honest with yourself. RAID has introduced no fees. I’m a lover of vanlife. Humans have succeeded because they adapted to changes. You have simply adapted to what you need. You need to feel like what your doing matters to you. Enjoy what your doing with your life. In my opinion, most people you teach aren’t water babies, which makes it hard. I don’t want to teach scuba. I want people who dive to learn from me, free of charge. Even though most I dive with have higher certification than me. I completely understand what you mean in this video. I hope you enjoy what your doing in life Right Now. Because we never know how much time we have on this beautiful planet. Which is mostly covered by water 😆👌 Safe diving
Sorry but I disagree. I do a hard job so that I can have money to travel and dive. Scuba diving, even being an instructor, is PARADISE by comparison. If she’s complaining about a Dive job, then she’s not going to be happy with ANY type of work. She’s just lazy 🤔
@@charlesg7926 I'm actually very happy with what I'm doing. I just like to share in order to hopefully help others in the industry. Way to be awesome on the internet. Have the day you deserve 🤣

And I hope you don't stop sharing your dives just for fun Let's enjoy the diving site and be happy for your happiness Sarah. I was so happy when you’re sharing advices for us. Just returned from scuba trip Little Corn Island (off the east coast of Nicaragua) Your insights were very helpful for understanding the challenges of my wonderful instructors.. Best wishes for future adventures.
Not only was the coral reef beautiful but was in fine health. NOT an easy island to get to but worth the effort as it it a trip back in time.. Quite an adventure.. Worth putting on your bucket list for sure. Note warm water in Jan/Feb was a dream Joe
I've just viewed your video and subscribed to your channel. As an IDC staff instructor and vlogger in Indonesia, I'm eagerly anticipating watching your upcoming journey to Komodo! 😊
@@AzulUnlimited Hello! Like you, I used to work as a dive instructor and have had some incredible experiences doing so. However, I have now transitioned into a new role as a PE teacher at an international school in Jakarta. This change has given me the opportunity to have the necessary resources and holiday time to escape the city and explore the stunning underwater world of Indonesia whenever possible. After working as a scuba instructor and teacher in various parts of the world, I can confidently say that Indonesia is truly unique. The diversity of the land and sea is unparalleled, making it a true paradise for divers. Looking forward to your visit to Komodo!
It has truly been heartwarming. I really can't believe the response I've gotten from this video. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
Great insight. I actually dropped that dream as well...I worked hard, but realized it was not worth it and now I just dive and enjoy. THANKS for the ALWAYS great videos
Hey! We're a dive shop in Cabo. It's always full of life here with the added bonus of the whales until April. Keep in mind winter- spring is windy and it can create some chop on the surface. Los Cabos has plenty of beautiful sheltered reef. yesterday we have cow nose rays, eagle rays, sea lions hunting in a bait ball, turtles , eels, macrolife all 5 - 20 mins by boat. If you want some info comment here!
Sarah, thank you for being such an amazing human being. I am a yoga instructor and it is in some ways similar to being a scuba instructor, so I totally relate to wanting to find a better situation. Yes, I would love to go on a scuba diving trip with you. I am totally new beginner scuba diver. I just have my Open Water Padi certification. July would be great. I am open to any time, any where.
Oh yes, I know that struggle too. I did both yoga teaching and scuba while I was in Mexico. It's hard to make a living that way because people want to do these things and find value in them, but don't want to pay a respectable amount for the service. Good luck out there 🙏 Stay tuned for expeditions! You can be the first to know if you sign up for our email list or follow us on Instagram :)
I came across your videos, ive been diving since i was 13. There very informative and entertaining. And you seem like such a sweetheart. I wish you the best of luck and nothing but success in any future endevors.
I have no doubt you will find a way/path that is right and healthy for you. You have such an uplifting persona. But you have to keep making videos Sarah. I need my regular fix of your laugh und smile. Happy new year. Greetings from Munich. Stephan
Hi Sarah - just came across your channel and like your stuff! I just moved into an RV and became a scuba instructor. I teach the occasional private class in Florida in the winter and teach during the summer for a buddy's dive shop at the St. Lawrence River on the New York-Canada border. Hoping for a gig in the Caribbean next winter. Hope you are enjoying life on the road; it's definitely an adventure...
Amazing!!! It's SUCH an adventure and I love it. The freedom and no rent really make me happy. There are tons of opportunities for work in the Caribbean, I'm sure you'll have no trouble as long as you speak some Spanish!
Good luck Sarah. Felt for you whilst watching this video. I hope you find your success in what ever adventure you choose. You have a wonderful happy smiling nature who comes across as calm professional and caring. I wish you good luck. Gary from over the pond.
Hi Sarah, my OW certification was at 1999. And I did diving just a couple times every year since that. Now I’m retired, I’m 50. I want to dive everyday, now I’m planning to take the dm and idc course. Oldtimer, are you serious? ☺️ absolutely, that’s what I dream for a long of my life. You had a very awesome job and living when you were a dive instructor and now you also have an amazing live in a van and a lot things to do next. From what your experience, my experience, and other people experince… I see many situations that we wanna do what people don’t wanna do and people wanna do what we don’t wanna do.. So, yes, don’t think alot, just do what we wanna do, enjoy a Now moment. Thank you for your share, very inspired Enjoy the journey
Thank you! Yes, that’s exactly what this life is all about. I hope you do those courses!! If you have any questions or want recommendations, hit me up🤙
26 years in the dive industry and I have seen this time and time again, and frankly our industry is worse for it. I went from full time instructor in the islands (Cayman) to working the "business" side of the industry and teaching part time. I can't complain as I have managed to support my family. One of the biggest issues is there is no clear path from instructor upwards, made worse by the low wages instructors make as so many are willing to work for nothing to live the "lifestyle". Once the lifestyle becomes work, some quit, some hang on and try a while longer but most eventually move away from our industry. The evere increasing insurance rates are sure also often mentioned as to why people stop teaching even part time as you mentioned. To be honest, I let quite a few of my former instructor students be listed on my facility insurance so they can teach part time, I am paying it anyhow and it doesn't cost anything but some extra paperwork, and after seeing them work to be instructors, hate seeing them not being able to afford to do it. Most of them teach a few classes a year while doing other full time jobs. Best of luck!
That's awesome of you to support them like that. It really is a shame that this happens so often. I've seen many amazing instructors give up and it makes me wish there was something to do about the industry. That's why we opened our shop in the first place. We wanted to be the bosses that we never had, but the pandemic response in indonesia has been exhausting. Where are you now?
I am an intermediate diver and your videos have been so fun and educational for me. I would love to be able to dive with you someday!! It must have been a tough decision, but I wish all the best. Much love from Japan!!
We live in northwest Indiana on Lake Michigan. Yes cold water stinks but there are some small lakes and quarry’s , including Lake Michigan that the diving is pleasurable. I get sometimes you just need a break . Good luck
All the best sarah... I hope one day you will start your own dive club and be your own boss... you have a strong follower base in youtube and most of the subscribers are willing to take classes from you. Just a suggestion...please don't mind... by the way I love your home....
Thank you so much! Yes, that is the dream and I'm putting in the work to make it happen, just not pushing too hard right now. Gotta be gentle with myself after a heartbreaking couple of years. appreciate you watching and commenting! hope to dive with you soon
Hi Sarah, i am sad to hear that you are leaving although odd as it may seem i was not totally surprised. The Covid19 pandemic has devastated many industries, most especially those related to the tourism & travel industry on a global scale. Diving as a recreation , business and an industry was not spared due to the numerous lockdowns & travel restrictions. I have viewed your numerous posts on various occasions and have found them to be very instructive, informative and interesting. It is my humble opinion that you are an excellent professional instructor ( although i miss the pleasure of being a student of yours, of which i am certain i would have thoroughly enjoyed the experience!) and the Labuan Bajo ie Lombok ,Indonesian diving community in general, is going to miss you. Your infectious enthusiasm, charming exuberance, warm passion , sincerity and dedication has touched the lives of many ,i am sure.( and i am pretty sure that you will go on to touch even more in the near future.) I do not dare to claim that i fully understand all the reasons that you have so openly chosen to share with us on why you have decided to stop teaching scuba diving, at least for the time being. But After carefully listening to you, i respect you even more. We all have our needs. With time some of these may change in terms of priorities n importance. Under the current circumstances & situation, i am confident you are making the right decision ; It is time to put YOURSELF FIRST. I wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR 2022 & All the very best in your future endeavours . For your new beginning, May you be showered with abundance of great health, wealth, success, joy & happiness. God bless you Sarah, for you are such a wonderful human being . Take care & stay safe, whether diving or not. Salam hangat, Warmest n kind regards, Jimmy.
😭🥰 This was so kind! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment such sweet words. I'm really blown away. I hope that we can dive together one day. The world is small so who knows!
You should come dive with us in Merida, MX. Different style, low key, deep cenote cave. Just dive for the sake of diving and with other professionals. We're all DM's or instructors.
I was a PADI instructor for 15 years, made it up to MSDT. I spent 10 years in SoCal teaching/diving, even with "cold" water (that's what a 6.5mm suit is for, people) and low vis I would still take it. Then in 2000 for family reasons I moved back to Colorado. Taught part time for a shop for 5 years, and due to increased travel demands of my regular job I had to go inactive status and then full retirement a year later. I miss it greatly. But I understand the situation/circumstances. When I was single I would do my day job and the instructor thing at night and on weekends. I was lucky, I got in with a great dive shop and the two brothers who owned the shop treated me decently and made me part of the "family" of the shop. That was all in SoCal. But I got married, had a child and things changed. Even the dive shop in Colorado was good to me, the couple who owned it allowed me to work on the weekends and pick the classes/times I could teach. Yeah, I worked my butt off. But I had a good social situation with it; the shop and people I met through it. I did enjoy the teaching and diving in SoCal, even at times with low vis or current/swell or colder water. But I tell ya, nothing like diving in a Kelp forest at Catalina on a day with 100 ft. visibility and calm (lake like) water. Being able to walk into the water from the beach and swim out to a rock outcropping with Sea Lions hanging out on it, they love to come down and play. And I hope to get back to diving again, even in SoCal, and maybe teach again. I'll have to do the IDC again to get re-instated/re-credentialed. But a good excuse to get in great shape again. Probably retire to some where tropical. I won't miss the snow.
Thanks for sharing! We all have different stories as dive professionals and I love hearing positive work experiences. I look forward to getting back to it too. As you say, life changes and we have to adapt. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to share your story.
Ah Sarah, I'm gutted for you! I've seen first hand your professionalism, passion for your job and the duty of care to your clients and can honestly say the dive industry will be at a loss without you!! Wish you all the best for your future plans and hopefully we can catch up again one day for a cup of coffee somewhere... Best wishes from me and Ket

Always enjoy your videos Sarah. I see you are becoming more comfortable with the uncomfortableness of closing a chapter of your life. This too is growth. The acceptance of your life changing and of making adult decisions. You still are an inspiration, to me and many others I am sure.
Sarah...thanks for sharing! I hear you completely ~ I had to take 2021 to figure out "life" and get clarity ~ when I was in doubt I decided to give myself permission to do nothing and listen to my gut taking time to figure out the next move ~ felt scary because I was doing more mental work over physical activity and it took a while (6 months) ~ but I'm at peace now and vibrating much better ~ kudos for being courageous to put yourself first 🙂
Yes to this!! I have been doing that last year too, but there have been huge changes so it all felt very chaotic. Now i'm in a place where the drama has settled and i'm looking forward to just not being stressed out every day 😂 Crazy times we're living in. Good luck to you and thanks for leaving a comment!
You can totally do this! It's not easy being a small business owner. There are a lot of revenue streams to use. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you do. F the pandemic
Hi Sarah. It's nice to see an honest opinion about the industry from someone with a lot of experience and from what you've said in this video I can see how working like that can become quite hard. I live in Melbourne Australia and although, for many, a lot of international (or even northern state) divers would cringe at the thought of diving in Port Phillip bay because it is essentially cold water. I can say with all honesty that the waters around my home have easily as much to offer as most tropical dives, but comparing the two is like apples and oranges, they are completely different worlds, but the variety and sea life is still amazing, not to mention the dozens and dozens of wrecks in and around the bay, your options are seemingly endless. Getting a little off track, my point was that I'm slowly working towards potentially doing instructing and I've already established my career as an electrician. The beauty of doing the work down here is that Melbourne has huge opportunity to work in basically any industry you want and, simply because of the weather and seasons, Scuba is very muchly a seasonal thing here, so it's very easy to sign on with a local school and really only have to worry about being super busy during the summer months. Granted there is diving still going on over the winter period (reefs seem to be more vibrant and more viz when it's cold, although a dry suit is strongly recommended XD ) it's done to a far lesser extent and you're not being slammed from every direction with very little reward. Not sure about fees and whatnot (haven't looked into it that far yet tbh) but for the most part you don't need to be a small business owner as there are plenty of dive shops / schools around that are more than happy to take instructors on for temp work on wages. Not sure if you knew about that already? Food for thought though if you haven't. Always good to find new ways to expand your diving adventures. Loved the video and hope you don't lose your passion. :)
Thanks for this! Yes, each kind of diving has its' beauty and like I said, I do love the cold water diving, just teaching in it can be a drag. I do know about temp work and freelancing and everything. I just have a demanding (but rewarding) 'normal' person job these days so I'm enjoying a bit of a break from the hustle. Definitely haven't lost the passion. I'm still gonna be sharing stuff here and putting together fun adventures :)
Same same here. Pandemic was the ultimate push to to stop teaching and not renewing my status. Had a daughter in the mean time and, like you said, priorities change with age. Couldn’t relate more to your video!
Congratulations on your little family 🥰 That's wonderful. And the great thing is that diving will always be there for fun or otherwise. Thanks for commenting :)
Love your very honest video, shame your not in Komodo in May this year as Im off out there for the second time in 6 years, anyway good luck with your future, all the best for 2022👍👍

May I be a word of support. You have not quit merely taking a needed break. I think you still have the passion of helping people. We all need to stop and recharge our batteries once and a while. As for Mexico I would love to go possibly in the fall of 22. Maybe some of the covid crazy will have settled down. LoL
Thanks so much. Yes, that's how I'm treating it. We'll see what's in store for me. I'll keep that in mind about Mexico, would be great to dive with you!
Hey there, thanks for this open, honest and hearthfelt video and sharing this. The industry is what it is and You got a very clear view of it. Don´t worry. Go Your way. You´ll always find a way back in, if You need. Not just You but the many who find themselves in a similar situation. Hugs from the other side of the word. 💙
If you ever decide to settle somewhere, kick it like James Blackman and do private lessons. You have a large enough fan base. And if it’s in a nice location, word would spread and you could make it work. Cheers to a new chapter! Hopefully you find what you’re looking for!
In whatever direction the future takes you I wish you the very best of luck and I'm sure you will do well. Your personality, positive view on life and clear explanations make these videos a real pleasure to watch, and I hope they will continue if you have the time. By the way, I tell everyone that cold water drysuit diving is great, which it is, but after 2 years I'm certainly yearning for some tropical waters too. Roll on 2022!

Thanks for sharing. All of your videos have been very helpful! Best of luck in the future. I am sure there be a long line of students waiting for your return.
I have recently made a few DM instructor friends and from what I have learned is everyone does get burned out sometimes and I respect your decision to step backs and focus on your self care. Worst thing you can do for yourself and students is to be burned out and trying to teach. Enjoy your journey and take away.
@@AzulUnlimited that’s great to hear I am a little late to the game finding you and your content and have found it very helpful I spent several hours yesterday watching videos. Videos like your help make that happen so thank you for sharing your knowledge and teaching us from afar
Hi Sarah, I’ve watched your channel a lot. my i wish you the best and just know things will work out! If you’re ever in Ga, look me up and let’s go dive in some warm water! You are truly a free spirit my love. Enjoy the adventure.
Sorry to hear about your situation due to the pandemic. I received my Rescue Diver certification last year and thought of instructor training, but I changed my mind. My thinking was to retire from current employment in a couple of years, and use the rating to make some side money and dive, but as you mentioned, it was not worth it. The costs of maintaining the rating are somewhat ridiculous, and the fact that it doesn't apply outside of the US is gouging American dive instructors. I am also getting too old to be carrying tanks for clients, so enough with that idea! Let's hope this is the last variant and the virus stops ruining everyone's plans!
Honestly. These past couple of years have been exhausting. I hear you on that plan. It's always good to weigh the options before investing in training. Thanks for watching!
I just got my OW certification last year in Mexico, I would love to go diving with you! :), I could make it work anytime between January and march probably!
Try to Teach in the southern states... Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, or Florida... most people in louisiana where I live, usually go to Florida panhandle for diving... still seasonal, but options..
Totally. There have been options for me, but I've been working on setting up something nomadic for myself to take advantage of my tiny home on wheels. Thanks for the suggestions :)
Hey great video, might i suggest getting a sail boat and sailing around the world. I used to work as a dive instructor and am now going to sail around the world. Not as hard as it sounds.
try sizing it down a bit; for example, focusing on either basic route (OW to Master Diver) or professional (Dive master & above) alone, or even specific courses.
And yes, please enjoy and do your dives for your own enjoyment and whenever you want to teach to family or friends do it for free for just the fun of it.. blessings.
I’m glad you are changing to do what you are passionate about or need to achieve for your personal goals. However, I’m going to miss your videos and your merch. If you are in California. Hopefully we can hit Channel Islands or some awesome Monterey dives when conditions are not too sporty. The cold water is not so bad if you see some epic sights. I’m down for even doing a party Van ride into Baja and dive for a long weekend.
I am realizing that I was unclear in this video about the TH-cam bit. I'm still going to be making videos - I just can't get myself organized to stick to a schedule of uploading them. I am SO down for some diving here. Send me a message on Instagram and we'll arrange something!
I love your videos and the way you are feeling is the way everybody feels, life is made of experiences and you already have lots of them. keep up with the good job!
I’m a software engineer and I’ve been thinking about building a van to travel in! I would love to stay around Ft Lauderdale and dive all the time. Getting my GUE fundies in a couple weeks!
Good for you! The next chapter is always exciting! I would love to go to Baja. If you find your van heading north, give a shout out. I'm trying to make it to the Puget Sound and Oregon as often as I can. Are you going to continue your posts (when you can) here or do you have an individual channel/social media? Good luck to you and most of all, have fun!
I will still be posting here on TH-cam as I can so stay tuned for that. I'm actually planning on heading to oregon and hopefully puget sound in the summer!
I did most of my diving in the northern waters of the uk. It can be cold and rough as it is now. Started diving in Royal Navy training in winter in cold weather. I later did a course with padi how they treated their instructors was very bad they only paid them if teaching clients all they got out of it was free dives and a few expences. Instructors were good it was just the b.ss. with the system i lefg and went to bsac thet was much more professional, but more involved what you needed to do. You needed yourown kit aswell. I may like to go to mexico one day, depends what you have in mind and cost as i am in uk its a long wAy. So what is a regular job for you sarah.?
It can definitely be tough out there. My first dive expedition in Mexico starts today so keep an eye out for future dates if you’d like to join. I did a normal job (working in communications for an environmental nonprofit) but I’m back to working for myself these days. Thanks for watching!
You gotta do you girl. I do enjoy your videos. I like the quirky way you go about it, plus they have been very informative. Living in a van ain't so bad. I'm building one right now, that I'm actually living in while I'm building it. Makes it harder that way, but hey, I gotta do me. I was living in a Subaru Forester, and a Kia Optima before that.
Wow the ad I got this video was like 3 minutes long and boring as hell but I watched it all the way through just bc u told us in the other video that that’s where your yt income comes from! You’re genuinely a nice person and I enjoy your videos, just wanted to put that out there haha
Thank you so much for persevering 🤣 the ads are the worse. I wish I had the power to choose what you all see but that’s up to your own algorithm. You rock
Hi Sarah, this was actually the 1st video of yours that my wife and I have watched and we will now be looking into more of your library! I’m an instructor (part time) with my wife as my go-to DM. We haven’t done any classes in a bit over a year and have just enjoyed diving for ourselves. The plan is to re-invest the time to teaching in future as well, but we shall see. If something looks like it may come together with Baja, please let us know. Otherwise, if you find yourself in FL, feel feee to look us up. Cheers.
@@AzulUnlimited Good morning Sarah! Sorry to tack onto an old thread... And to pester you during what is most likely precious free time... But I just caught your drysuit guide from Nov and wanted to add 2 tidbits that may or may not be new info: 1. I noticed that when showing off the drysuit, the zipper was closed. This may have been for demo purposes, but try not to store the zipper closed. If you keep it open, but protected, when stored then it will last longer. 2. As an alternative to neoprene boots or expensive "rock boots," an inexpensive pair of Chuck Taylors make GREAT drysuit boots for sewn-in socks. Cheers! Hope to meet up with you in FL someday!
I envy tropical scuba diving. At the end of my Scuba course in Vancouver BC I bought a dry suit. Way to much chill involved in wet suit diving in cold Northern Pacific water. Along with the dry suit you then needed way more weight to get you down. I never experienced tropical warm scuba when they wear only a bathing suit instead of the 100lbs of gear we need to wear.
You're diving the real cold water! Good you got the proper exposure suit, that really makes or breaks the experience. Maybe one day you'll experience scuba sans wetsuit. I've only done it in Thailand, everywhere else i've needed at least a little something!
At first we decided on Cancun for 2 weeks in mid-February, although our female part of the group of 3 has now decided for Jamaica for 2° more warmth. Decision not yet final. Keep your positivity, with just the right amount of melancholy when looking back 💖
Thanks for watching! The yucatan is lovely, but I'm thinking Baja for this trip. maybe you'll be down to go to that side of the country in December 2022?
Sarah! I'm so happy for you, like one of my favorites bands said: "Follow your bliss". I hope you enjoy this new chapter of your life. I'll always wondering how to combine my carrer with my dives, sometimes is so hard just go to dive that I can't imagine the responsabilities of been an instructor. I still want to be a Instructor but you said a really serious facts I didn't know, so I'll take my time, just chilling and dive for fun for a while. Because work 7 days a week do not see nothing comfy )= , Anyhow hope you are doing great and take care a lot. happy new year BTW As always thanks for sharing.
Happy new year! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I'm glad you got some info that you didn't have before. it's good to take in all of the pros and cons before jumping into the lifestyle. wishing you the best!
Hey Sara, Great video! Thank you for the pros and cons. The van life is something I've wanted for a while, though I'm struggling finding what income during traveling would best suit me. You're no longer an instructor but still live the vanlife, can i ask how you are affording it? What do you do for a living now?
I was working remotely for a nonprofit but left that job in May to pursue my own work. I'm currently building websites, doing webmaster work and growing my TH-cam community 🤙 you could look into seasonal jobs to get you started!
I began scuba lessons in 2013 and enjoyed the experiences in a pool, but after getting to know some of the other students, I decided to not take a chance with the only life that I have been given. My take-away was that those other students were egomanicas that needed to prove their worth, and scuba diving was their drug to do it, and I don't think that many were very bright. Some of the comments that they would make in class raised a few red flags in my gut, so I stuck to pool water. I am not going 30 feet under the water with a fool by my side.
Wow... I'm sorry to hear you had that kind of experience. Yes, there are people who are into it for that reason, but I like to stay away from those people. I love seeing the creatures, feeling weightless and fully present with the breath. I hope you'll give it a chance with the right instructor/friends 💙
Hey Sarah, Happy New Year to you both. Thanks for sharing. As you say circumstances are what they are. Each one of us has had to re-evaluate how we are living our lives and where we are heading. Good luck with whatever you choose to do next. Much to my shame I have never dived Baja, and my dream is to dive with Humpbacks and the aggregating Mobulas. Let me know what you are planning in terms of a trip. Best x
Let me know what time of year you would want to join me on a trip to Mexico for scuba adventures!

Is there a best time to go?
@@axeffektt It seems like December - March is pretty good... and that would give me plenty of time to get my act together, December 2022?
@@AzulUnlimited December is always tough because of the holidays and wrapping up the business year. Maybe a week in the first two? End of January/beginning of February is always nice. Get the end of the year out of the way, get the new year started and then take some time to relax.
December/January I’m in!! Let’s do it!!!
count me in. hang in there sara, your channel is 1 of the best I've seen.
Totally. And it doesn't mean we have to stay that way forever, but it can be if the decision is right! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it.
Non-teaching status isn’t so bad. Stay with the sport, you can always go back when the time is right for YOU. Good luck!
That's the plan!
All the best in you journey to reinvent your future. Take your time. No matter where you end up, scuba will be there when you need it.
Absolutely! Thanks so much for watching
Good Luck Sarah…if you ever drive to this side of the country let us know so we can go diving together!
Excuse me while I fangirl :) Thanks for watching! I learn so much for you all. I would absolutely love to dive together and in the meantime if you ever want to do a TH-cam collaboration, I would be so so stoked.
@@AzulUnlimited anytime! We are big fans. Let’s make it happen.
Thanks so much! Yup, gotta go with the flow of what life is bringing. I'll be back to teaching some day :)
Been instructor since 2008 but started out in cold waters of Scotland so defo makes it easier going cold to tropics instead of other way.😊
Hope it works out for you and your new adventure.
@@AzulUnlimited 👍
Aww thanks so much. Very sweet of you to say. And yes, I'm looking forward to that giant stride with you all.
You've got yourself another subscriber. As someone who is looking to get into teaching as a part time gig, and maybe think about making it full time, this has been a really useful insight. Just telling it as it is. No frills. Now I need to check out the rest of your uploads ☺️
Wow! Thank you so much. It's really a special job, but good to have all the information before making an investment. Glad to have you here!
Mexico?
Sara thank you for sharing. You’re just doing what most people sometimes think about it but never have the courage to do it
Thanks a lot. Sometimes it takes a global pandemic to get you moving 😆 Thanks for watching!
I just found you so I hope you keep posting content. You’re fun, lovely and intelligent with a free spirit. Love it!
Thank you very much! Still making videos 😊 just posted a little Q&A a couple of days ago. If you want to stay connected, message me on Instagram
Which is mostly covered by water 😆👌
Safe diving
Great points there! It's all about letting go, going with the flow and enjoying the little things. i love the simple life. Thanks for watching
Sorry but I disagree. I do a hard job so that I can have money to travel and dive. Scuba diving, even being an instructor, is PARADISE by comparison. If she’s complaining about a Dive job, then she’s not going to be happy with ANY type of work. She’s just lazy 🤔

Just returned from scuba trip Little Corn Island (off the east coast of Nicaragua) Your insights were very helpful for understanding the challenges of my wonderful instructors.. Best wishes for future adventures.
Thank you so much! How was the diving there???
Not only was the coral reef beautiful but was in fine health. NOT an easy island to get to but worth the effort as it it a trip back in time.. Quite an adventure.. Worth putting on your bucket list for sure. Note warm water in Jan/Feb was a dream Joe
I've just viewed your video and subscribed to your channel. As an IDC staff instructor and vlogger in Indonesia, I'm eagerly anticipating watching your upcoming journey to Komodo! 😊
Thank you so much for your support. Where in Indonesia are you located?
@@AzulUnlimited Hello! Like you, I used to work as a dive instructor and have had some incredible experiences doing so. However, I have now transitioned into a new role as a PE teacher at an international school in Jakarta. Hey! We're a dive shop in Cabo. It's always full of life here with the added bonus of the whales until April. Keep in mind winter- spring is windy and it can create some chop on the surface. If you want some info comment here!
Awesome, thanks so much! I have friends in the area so I can't wait to check it out.
Stay strong Sara. Wishing you a great 2022!

I did both yoga teaching and scuba while I was in Mexico. aw thanks :) I will definitely still be making videos. Luckily you don't need any certification whatsoever to teach on the internet 😆

Thank you for your share, very inspired

Best of luck with your decision. I am sure you will meet your new challenges.
There are always challenges, but things are going great :) thank you

Your infectious enthusiasm, charming exuberance, warm passion , sincerity and dedication has touched the lives of many ,i am sure.( and i am pretty sure that you will go on to touch even more in the near future.)
I do not dare to claim that i fully understand all the reasons that you have so openly chosen to share with us on why you have decided to stop teaching scuba diving, at least for the time being.
Salam hangat,
Warmest n kind regards,
Jimmy.
😭🥰 This was so kind! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment such sweet words. I'm really blown away. I hope that we can dive together one day. The world is small so who knows!
New to the channel. WOW! You are an incredibly brave and strong woman!
Be true to you...in the end you are all that matters!
Thanks for joining me here! Appreciate you 🙏
You should come dive with us in Merida, MX. Different style, low key, deep cenote cave. Just dive for the sake of diving and with other professionals. We're all DM's or instructors.
Sounds like a great kind of fun dive. I miss the cenotes :)
Thanks so much Jason! I have a feeling we'll meet up for some diving somewhere in the future. I look forward to it :)
CMAS Two Star Instructor. 14 years. South Africa. Sodwana Bay, Aliwal Shoal, Cape Town. The best way to make a small fortune in diving is to start with a large one.
hahaha isn't that the truth 😆
Always enjoy your videos Sarah. I see you are becoming more comfortable with the uncomfortableness of closing a chapter of your life. This too is growth. The acceptance of your life changing and of making adult decisions. You still are an inspiration, to me and many others I am sure.
Thank you very much! Appreciate your support :)
For real though. is it over yet? jeez...
Dope van! I’m about to get my instructor and move into a van or sailboat so thanks for the priceless info 🤘🏼
Yaaaasss!!! You're gonna love it. Simplicity at its finest.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Appreciate you watching and leaving a comment 🙏🤙
Love your very honest video, shame your not in Komodo in May this year as Im off out there for the second time in 6 years, anyway good luck with your future, all the best for 2022👍👍
Oh love that!!! You can still dive on the Azul Unlimited boat. We have amazing people in Labuan Bajo. Just hit us with an email azulunlimited@gmail.com
thank you for sharing all the information you did since you started doing youtube videos, and much luck to you in finding your energy and whatever else you need to find! :)
Thank you so much. Appreciate you taking the time to comment :) here's to 2022
May I be a word of support.
Thanks for watching! Very true. These years are all about the pivot hehehe
If you ever decide to settle somewhere, kick it like James Blackman and do private lessons. You have a large enough fan base. And if it’s in a nice location, word would spread and you could make it work. Cheers to a new chapter! Hopefully you find what you’re looking for!
Thanks so much! I'm definitely enjoying where I am. That is a great idea though. Maybe someday. James is a legend :)
Wishing you the very best of luck in 2022.
Thanks so much. Right back at you!
Thanks so much Tim! There will definitely be more videos to come. It sounds like you're ready for an expedition then right? See you in Mexico?
@@AzulUnlimited Planning for St Lucia in June then the Mediterranean in September. But before then it's a side mount course here in the UK (baby steps here: th-cam.com/video/u5HaeBnBz3c/w-d-xo.html) and then some wreck diving in the English Channel. Mexico I may have to enjoy via your posts 🙂
@@timgosling6189 Fair enough. Great job with your first sidemount dive!
Maybe take the next step in instructor and step up to tech and cave ? Classes pay much better, water is warmer, tech divers have more money and you could teach in the US. Florida has warm water also! Thanks for your video.
That's a good route, but not what I'm interested in right now. Maybe one day! Thanks for watching :)
The van life looks cozy! Just got my open water cert through MDA, PADI while in Guam. I’m enjoying your videos. Looking forward to my Advanced next. What area were you teaching? That boat video looked amazing!
Congrats!!! You're about to embark on a super fun obsession hehehe. I used to own that boat in Indonesia! Beautiful place. Highly recommend you go with the new owners, now calling the shop Azul Komodo in labuan bajo 🤙
@@AzulUnlimited Wow! Sounds amazing! I hope to get another nurse contract out here. I would love to visit some of the surrounding countries to explore & dive! I’m from New Orleans, so the clearest water at home is 3 hours away in Pensacola, Florida. So excited about these new adventures! Thanks for your videos :)
@@bayougurlie Florida doesn't sound so bad! Would love to get out there one day.
Thanks for sharing. All of your videos have been very helpful! Best of luck in the future. I am sure there be a long line of students waiting for your return.
Thanks a lot. I hope so too :)
I have recently made a few DM instructor friends and from what I have learned is everyone does get burned out sometimes and I respect your decision to step backs and focus on your self care. Worst thing you can do for yourself and students is to be burned out and trying to teach. Enjoy your journey and take away.
Thanks! I took a year off and now I’m back at it🤙
@@AzulUnlimited that’s great to hear I am a little late to the game finding you and your content and have found it very helpful I spent several hours yesterday watching videos. I truly believe the more you know the better diver I can be and more importantly the safer diver I can be for not only myself but those around me. Videos like your help make that happen so thank you for sharing your knowledge and teaching us from afar
@@alrobinette3475 Glad to help! Thanks for being here :)
Hi Sarah, I’ve watched your channel a lot. my i wish you the best and just know things will work out! If you’re ever in Ga, look me up and let’s go dive in some warm water! You are truly a free spirit my love. Enjoy the adventure.
Thanks so much! I will take you up on that when I head out on my longer road trip (hopefully this year!)
Rad! Connect with us on Instagram as I'll give more up to date info over there :)
You’re amazing. As an instructor you hit all the good and bad. You really are fantastic.
Thanks so much for watching. Appreciate you being here :)
Not as hard as it sounds.
oh man, to be honest, I'm sure it's amazing, but I'm not even remotely interested 😆
try sizing it down a bit; for example, focusing on either basic route (OW to Master Diver) or professional (Dive master & above) alone, or even specific courses.
Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm good with my decision :) appreciate you watching the video!
And yes, please enjoy and do your dives for your own enjoyment and whenever you want to teach to family or friends do it for free for just the fun of it.. blessings.
uufff won't be doing that without my teaching status and insurance. Especially with family 😂
Thanks so much! Yes, I figured people would understand. I appreciate you watching and there will be more videos to come!
I’m a software engineer and I’ve been thinking about building a van to travel in! I would love to stay around Ft Lauderdale and dive all the time. Getting my GUE fundies in a couple weeks!
oh man, you're gonna have so much fun! I've been thinking about going there next winter. Let me know how it goes!
@@AzulUnlimited thank you!! I would love to get down to Mexico and dive too. So much amazing diving!
@@markbond08 Stay tuned! Maybe we can caravan one day :D
Do whatever you feel like. Enjoy life. Thx for sharing.
That's the plan! Going with the flow of life :)
Sarah, you seem such a great human being! Good luck with anything
Aww thank you!! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment 💙

backup plans are important! I have my real estate license in-active until I decide to get out of the geeklife...cheers!
Absolutely! Real estate is a good plan👏
As long as you have Abbey, you have everything!
Absolutely!! Grateful for her every day
You gotta do you girl.
YAAAS! Amazing! I've thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of it. and don't worry, i'll still be sharing quirky, informative videos here :)
You rock
Good luck with everything this year! Love your personality btw :)
Thank you so much :) appreciate you watching
Hi Sarah, this was actually the 1st video of yours that my wife and I have watched and we will now be looking into more of your library! I’m an instructor (part time) with my wife as my go-to DM. We haven’t done any classes in a bit over a year and have just enjoyed diving for ourselves. The plan is to re-invest the time to teaching in future as well, but we shall see. If something looks like it may come together with Baja, please let us know. Otherwise, if you find yourself in FL, feel feee to look us up. Cheers.
Yay! Welcome to the channel :) I will let you know about Baja and watch out, I may take you up on FL. Thinking about spending next winter there...
@@joecabeza6217 Thanks for that! I've seen people rock chucks with drysuits. I love that :) and yes! definitely down to meet up in FL one day
I envy tropical scuba diving.
Really appreciate your video and honesty! Would you ever consider coming over and teaching in the hard waters of the UK! ?
pfffff probably not! 😂 I definitely want to go and dive there once I get a dry suit, but teaching... I like sunny california too much :)
You are very honest ! Loved it , but, the situation is different around the world. If you ever dive in Greece i would like to dive with you.
Greece would be amazing!! I am so down for that.
Weekends are the worst time to do things as too crowded. Agree about cold water
Yeah definitely. Always nice to get out on an uncrowded weekday
@@AzulUnlimited Gabi makes the decisions here, and if we don't want to risk any trouble, we better give in 😊

Because work 7 days a week do not see nothing comfy )= , Anyhow hope you are doing great and take care a lot. happy new year BTW
As always thanks for sharing.
Happy new year! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I'm glad you got some info that you didn't have before. it's good to take in all of the pros and cons before jumping into the lifestyle. wishing you the best!
Lot of good points about full time instructor. I would have done that 20 years ago but I wouldn’t want to do that full time now
Totally. Sometimes there is a time and place for these kinds of things. thanks for watching :)
Azul unlimited expeditions will for sure be a great success! Summer/ Winter always works best for people with "regular" jobs!
Very true! Maybe we'll come your way for some caverns too :)
Best x
Thank you Bob!!! I would so love to dive with you again. I think we could all do with a fun diving trip to mexico :)
