    I remember the old taipan see bridge, back then before the new bridge came in, we would cross this bridge to see our Grandpa/Grandma (She died in 2015) in Vermont. After the new bridge came up, I only saw the standing chunks that would be blown up, and now it’s just a memory lying under the water.

      Eight Billion people held their breath wondering when and where your Grandma died, the relevance of that information to the lives of those eight Billion people, cannot be overstated, hitherto, seemingly perplexing and achingly frustrating dilemmas, just fell into place like the proverbial Penny that dropped, answers so tantalisingly close, but then so incredibly distant, surrendered themselves, everything for eight Billion people just all of a sudden became simpler and easier to understand, the World truly turned.
      Thanks for that.

    Great assortment of different types of bridges built with different materials; concrete, steel, and both. Each one requires different methods to demolish with explosives. The 1st one was concrete and 3 km long. Use of water bags to contain flying debris was very effective. Sandbags are also used for same reason. They must have drilled thousands of holes for all the charges. Number 2 and 3 were steel bridges. Can clearly see speed of impulse in detonation cord that ties all charges together. Pre-notched steel components and linear shaped charges used. Hard to tell if stick kicker charges used like they do in building demos. Watching explosive demolitions never gets old.

    As someone who drove across the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge every few weeks/months during construction of the new span and dismantling of the old span (so got to see the piecemeal progress), it's crazy to me to see so many bridges being exploded straight into the water below. The old span was carefully disassembled and pieces were either taken by truck across the remainder of the span, or lowered onto barges below. Only the pier foundations were imploded, and even then were surrounded by nets in the water to prevent debris from getting far.

  • @Bobrogers99
    @Bobrogers99 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it's sad that some of these bridges were demolished and replaced, not because they were no longer useful, but because they were no longer structurally sound. Of course some must be replaced because an unforeseen amount of traffic makes then inadequate, but others may be either poorly designed, poorly built or poorly maintained. In our throwaway society we gleefully discard it and build another - which may eventually suffer the same fate.

    • @MegaBuildsYT
      @MegaBuildsYT  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of them were also really old. So replacing them instead of having high maintenance costs or even risking a collapse definitly makes sense in many cases.

    • @Renville80
      @Renville80 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Liberty Memorial bridge in North Dakota was one such bridge. As historic as it was, it was too narrow, it had lead paint, the bearings had rusted in place, and the piers were turning to gravel inside. Rehabilitation would have been more than the replacement that was ultimately built next to it.
