When I'm with someone who speaks both languages, I don't really pay attention to which language I use. I sometimes switch to my native language because it's more comfortable. On the other hand, if the person only speaks one language then I'm more conscious of it and I only speak in that language.
I do that with English and German all the time. I will be speaking and I will switch between languages sometimes when I'm struggling to remember a certain word.
