    A player gets 2 steps after picking up their dribble while in motion. But NBA refs are notorious for not calling a travel. If a player is stopped, they can only pivot on one foot. They can’t take a step with out dribbling. And of course, you can’t start dribbling once you’ve stopped. Hope that helps, love the videos.

    • @bigd7481
      @bigd7481 3 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Technically it's 2 steps but the NBA has a "0 step" or "gather step" rule where if you pick up the ball between or just after you initiate a step then that step counts as "Step 0" or a "ghost step." So they really get 3 steps. James Harden's famous step back jumper is an example of this.

      Yea but also people don't know the rules of gathering either so they think refs don't call them. But they do miss alot of them tho. Alot people think harden stepback is a travel, but if you really slow it down it usually not a travel it's just really good body control, yes he does travel from time to time too. Another example Giannis master that zero step and the fact he leap so far makes it look he travel. Doesn't matter how many step you take as long as a dribble in play and the heisy in dribble is still considered a dribble alive and not a gather.

    If you want an idea for the try channel, we have a game called HORSE. It's just a basketball game where one player takes a shot from a particular area, and if the other players can't hit the same shot, they get a letter (H, then O, then R etc) once you spell HORSE you lose. After every player shoots, the next player gets to take the first shot and decide where to shoot from. If you miss, you don't get a letter, it just moves on to the next player.
    Doesn't have to be HORSE, you can use any word. Depending on how long you want to play. But BLOKE has the same amount of letters, just sayin'!! :P

    Basically, if you're going towards the goal (basket) you can tale ALL the "traveling" you need. Some of these
    the player should have to show a Passport! Also "palming" is seldom called, where your hand is UNDER the ball
    and you "walk" (change directions) seldom called anymore. That`s today's NBA.

  • @zionthedon7745
    @zionthedon7745 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The rule for traveling is 2 steps HOWEVER the steps only start counting the moment you LIFT YOUR FOOT AFTER YOU HAVE GATHERED THE BALL. That distinction is important because players will gather the ball with both hands and then one of their feet will hit the ground and people count that as a step. But that step was initiated before you gathered the ball and thus the step immediately after begins the count. Example: (Running) lifts foot, gathers ball(stops dribbling), foot falls, lifts other foot(step one)

    At this level there are a lot fewer fails than you might believe. In 2019, 866 NCAA players were competing for 60 draft picks in the NBA, not only with each other, but also with a growing number of overseas players. About 40 to 45 will survive past their rookie contract. Of the 15 players that play on a team, 8 or 9 will get regular minutes, minus injuries. These players are the best of the best. Enjoy.

    Traveling is tricky. In the NBA you get a “gather step”. Basically, that means you can finish the step you’re in the middle of when you gather the ball in both hands. Then you get two full steps before you have to shoot or pass. So it’s effectively two and a half steps. You cannot dribble again once you gather the ball.

  • @rebelpanda71
    @rebelpanda71 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s technically 2 steps after the dribble that’s legal. Any after is called a travel and you lose possession. There is something called the “gather” step before the 2 steps are counted that a lot of people don’t understand. It’s like the “0th” step (so 0, 1, 2 steps) that professionals abuse (why you see a lot of “3” dribble drives). The refs are very lax about calling travels nowadays, and no one really cares unless it’s blatantly obvious.

    It's 2 steps, but that's after you finish your "gather" or the process of picking up the ball or controlling it (rather than actively dribbling). So often it looks like 3 or 4 in real-time. Actually, most of the time it's right on the borderline of illegal, if not technically a travel.

    It’s easy to count a player’s first step from the time the ball is dribbled last. But you’re supposed to start from when he physically picks up his dribble. And players have gotten really good at gathering the ball a split second after taking a step, making their next step their first technical step. Makes a non-travel look like a travel a lot. With all that said, players do take 3-4 steps and get away with it more often than they should

  • @Alderak1
    @Alderak1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The NBA doesn’t count steps until the ball is “gathered”, so on the last dribble a player (ala Westbrook at 5:45) takes any number if steps on the last dribble, and then 2 after the “gather”....that makes it look like the player takes 3 or more steps after ceasing the dribble.

    Traveling rules have kind of changed over the years. They barely call traveling at all but technically, it's two steps. The trick of it is when you start counting steps. These days they're not supposed to start counting until the player can't dribble anymore, which is usually when they put both hands on the ball or one hand all the way under the ball.

    Actually, you are only supposed to get 2 steps after you stop dribbling (bouncing) the ball, but often times in the NBA you will see players get away with 3 more often than not. It is really up to the ref to call the travel after 2 steps though.
