You know it's a Jay Wolpert pilot just by how hard they go with the medieval fanfare music and theme. Hilarious. The games were hit or miss. Inflation was really tedious. And that bonus round needed a major rethink. Not only one question to decide the whole thing, but the win generates such a delayed reaction, I couldn't even tell which answer was the right one. Peter was good here, but still in his learning "I have to shout everything" first phase. As we would learn, he figured it out.
This was a potential replacement for "Card Sharks" but lost out to "Battlestars" on NBC's Daytime Schedule. Also, that's veteran "Jeopardy!" announcer Johnny Gilbert announcing.
Judging by the date I presume this was in the running to be in the time slot that Battlestars would end up taking two months later. I think NBC made the right call in this case
The over-exaggerated everything (the set, the music, the excitement) made this an incredible watch - wish it had gone beyond the pilot stage so there’d be more episodes to see. The funniest part was the reveal of the Golden Quest bonus game. That was total confusion as the camera needed to be pulled back to see the signage come down. Even so, even Peter seemed underwhelmed by it - especially after the giant music cue. Thanks for another awesome & rare find, Wink! This is easily one of my favorite TH-cam channels.
I was in the audience for pilot #1 ...it lasted for hours and they even let us go because technical issues prevented them from finishing it that day....does this first pilot exist in completion?
Of COURSE this was a Jay Wolpert production! 😂 Dude was one of the most eccentric game show producers of all time with a madman-like creativity, an underrated GOAT
I guess around this time Jay was of the mindset: "If it's gonna be corny....MAKE IT CORNY!" But is it just me or does that seem to be Peter Tomarken's speciality? A show that's really corny on the surface? Press Your Luck, Hit Man, Bargain Hunters, the Monopoly pilot?
This is an August 1981 pilot episode from the American unsold game show Duel In The Daytime. Today's two contestants competing are Steve & Frances. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
Johnny Gilbert's billing of Peter Tomarken at the top here-- I think he would have done the same thing (Johnny Gilbert would have) if Johnny had been on Press Your Luck or Hit Man.
Interesting but obvious why it did not make it. Inflation alone took way too long and it would be a miracle for a contestant to guess the difference exactly. The final challenge was...odd and he nailed the right clue to win. Perhaps a little more refining could have made a difference and less choice in games. They did spend some money on that set.
Way too long per game. Imagine trying to fit five games and a bonus round in one show! It would have to straddle. Wolpert loved Whew!, didn’t he? How many more pilots did he use the blooper format?
they should've made the inflation game part of the Pricing Game on the Price is Right. i like the balloon representing money being raised throughout the years
This pilot was taped in August 1981 so before both Hit Man and PYL’s debuts in 1983. This was Peter’s second game show pilot after Rodeo Drive for Jay Wolpert
Pilots don't typically award prizes. They are usually scripted games with people who are paid to act out different scenarios in them. They are not legit games.
I was dying to see this old Game Show Duel In The Day Time which I never it before. It’s a full episode and I waited for a long while for that to show that on TH-cam. I wonder what Channel did that used to come on?
23:00; That's an incredible miracle! The bonus round is finished in 6 seconds. That is equivalent to Brock Lesnar winning a title against Kofi Kingston on SmackDown in October 4, 2019.
This wasn’t the first time the concept of different games was tried. The second round of the Goodson Todman pilot, Puzzlers, hosted by Pat Sajak, had a best of three contest, where each point was earned in a different game.
This is the most Jay Wolpert show ever
Who says Jay Wolpert didn't think outside the box? While it did not sell, Peter was still the right man for this kind of show.

Such a high-energy, excitable host! Gone from us far, far too soon. :( Rest in peace, Peter and wife Kathleen. Hope his kids are all doing well.
Yea on 9/11 😿😿😿
Me too :(
Jay Wolpert had a very creative mind for game shows but they ended up so convoluted they rarely made it to air.
Jay Wolpert had some truly ridiculous game shows. I'm not surprised this didn't sell.
FINALLY!!!! One of my requested. Winkster, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!!
This was a potential replacement for "Card Sharks" but lost out to "Battlestars" on NBC's Daytime Schedule.

Of all the rare shows/pilots that Peter Tomarken has hosted, I can honestly say I have *never* heard of this one.
Wow this came out of nowhere! Thanks Wink. And happy belated birthday. 🎉
This was a good pilot. I can tell this game show was produced by Jay Wolpert. They looked like they took parts of the Whew! set to do this show.
Judging by the date I presume this was in the running to be in the time slot that Battlestars would end up taking two months later. I think NBC made the right call in this case
I was on the first pilot. I heard it is in the archive at UCLA. I wish I could see it.
Peter Tomarken did a pilot in 1981 titled The Casino Game.
I saw a photo for this show in TV Game Show Magazine.
@23:48, directed by Bill Carruthers? Sound familiar?
I can never look at Peter Tomarken the same way again, knowing that we lost this spectacular game show host all too soon. 😔
We love ❤️ you Peter
Announcer is Johnny Gilbert.
From jeopardy Johnny Gilbert announced
This seems to have the feel of "Whew!" (which Jay Wolpert also created) crossed with "The Price Is Right" and maybe a hint of "Time Machine."
No surprise why this didn't sell - too complex, too slow-paced, and the bonus game was far too easy.
I didn't know Peter tomarken hosted this pilot episode
I would have bought this. So much fun!
Excellent 1981 game show classic!!
The over-exaggerated everything (the set, the music, the excitement) made this an incredible watch - wish it had gone beyond the pilot stage so there’d be more episodes to see.

The only other one I have is Pilot 3 which is a line cut.
@@WinkMartindaleGames How many pilots were shot?
@@WinkMartindaleGames I'd love to see Pilot 3! Requested :) Thank you for sharing this pilot-been waiting for it too!
@17:40, no doubt, taken from WHEW!

Another fascinating idea from Jay's fertile mind. My inner child liked it a lot.

"Dulcet Tones", long before PYL!
Is that Johnny Gilbert in the announcer's booth?
Yes. Gilbert has been announcer over 30 different games. He took a turn at the emcee's podium with "Music Bingo" and "Fast Draw".
Yes, it is.
No its John Harlon in the booth. of course its him

This is an extremely fun game. It should have been picked up.
I have been looking forward to this one for a long time
This is a fun one. I wish the network any network back then would green light with this game
gerry wilson big tomarken fan but see why this didn't get pickec up its the same reason some tpir games were retired

Inflation needed a set target IMO, it'd add suspense and give the game a proper finish.
Way too long per game. Imagine trying to fit five games and a bonus round in one show! It would have to straddle.
Wolpert loved Whew!, didn’t he? How many more pilots did he use the blooper format?
What a strange mash up of games and themes and tone. All over the place!
Steve looks familiar. Was the Steve that was from the Password Plus episode with George Pappard rant?
Sloppy slogans did remind me of the bloopers from Whew! Looking at the shields from the set I'm thinking of the Buick logo.
I never heard of this one or saw it on TV ...I believe Wink must save it at the right moment lol
I’d say Steve was hitting the slopes before taping. What a bizarre hopped up show. Can see why this one didn’t make it. It is “creative”.
they should've made the inflation game part of the Pricing Game on the Price is Right. i like the balloon representing money being raised throughout the years
Jay Wolpert and Bill Carruthers.... I presume between Hit Man and Press Your Luck?
Before Hit Man, this is from 1981.
This pilot was taped in August 1981 so before both Hit Man and PYL’s debuts in 1983. This was Peter’s second game show pilot after Rodeo Drive for Jay Wolpert
Quite a change from "press your luck"
That could _NOT_ have been the entire closing credits sequence.
If the pacing was better....then again that doesn't stop the current regurgitation of "Let's Make a Deal".
"Dulcet Tones" ... Where have we heard that before?
Was this the 1st game show Peter hosted, and when did Peter do Rodeo Drive?
No. Peter Tomarken emceed "Hit Msn". Louise DuArte hosted "Rodeo Drive".

I don't know why this show was not picked up. It looked good & fun. Wink, can you bring it back?
what product was the last slogan associate with?
ABC Wide World of Sports
Definitely like the Monty python theme.
When a game show pilot doesn't get picked up, do the contestants still get to keep the prizes?
Pilots don't typically award prizes. They are usually scripted games with people who are paid to act out different scenarios in them. They are not legit games.
I could be wrong, but it's my understanding they don't.
No. In fact, some segments are often predetermined just to show how the game can work.
@@JayTemple I was fortunate to do several run throughs and pilots for several game shows and you do not keep prizes won.
Nope. I think they get compensated for being on the pilot.
someone praying "Our Father..." before open?
I think it's a running gag that before the filming of a pilot, the VO announcer makes a gag praying for success.
After reading @louisbrownusofa's account of how problematic the first pilot's taping was, I can understand why.
0:42; The announcer in this 1981 pilot called "Duel In The Daytime" was Johnny Gilbert.
23:45; Duel In The Daytime is a Jay Wolpert Productions.
I hear the song and I think of Sloth and the Goonies
I was dying to see this old Game Show Duel In The Day Time which I never it before. It’s a full episode and I waited for a long while for that to show that on TH-cam. I wonder what Channel did that used to come on?
It didn't.
The main idea behind this was done in spanish tv in the 1990s as "sin vergüenza" th-cam.com/video/QAKHSXMnGCs/w-d-xo.html

23:00; That's an incredible miracle! The bonus round is finished in 6 seconds. That is equivalent to Brock Lesnar winning a title against Kofi Kingston on SmackDown in October 4, 2019.
I'm glad Peter ultimately got a much better show than this.
Peter was too hyped up.
This was a disaster
It wasn't Peter's fault.
what a weird theme for a game show. The idea of different games has potential, but.. presented like a duel is kind of cringe.
This wasn’t the first time the concept of different games was tried. The second round of the Goodson Todman pilot, Puzzlers, hosted by Pat Sajak, had a best of three contest, where each point was earned in a different game.
Changing into his swimtrunks.
Yep!!!!!
Looks like another Barry & Enright show.
Nope, definitely not anything they would have created.
Inflation game complete nonsense. What if they are off 50c
This is ridiculous
Wacky game, wasn't it?
I wish Peter was still here, it would've been so cool to see him return to press your luck instead of banks
Elizabeth is cute 🥰
But if he were still alive, he'd be well into his 80's.
