Hi! I am also an educator (six years in the classroom and this will be my third year as a librarian) and your videos just spark my joy and excitement to get back to school every year. Sometimes I overbuy things for school (I’m working on it), and when I have bins or decor that I decide not to use the next year I feel bad. But all the time I’ll find they I need something I already have and I can give it another life a purpose. I noticed that your color paper bins that use to designate student groups, you are now using those for curriculum organization. I just love that. Also, color coordinating just makes my whole heart happy. Thanks for you videos and inspiration!!!
This is the first time I see your daughter. How nice and adorable to wait patiently for mommy finishing work 👍🏻Thank you, Shelley. God bless you abundantly 🙏🏻🎉
I’ve worked in classes like that and putting at least one older student at each pod as kind of a team leader really helped some of those problems. Students in the older grade feel important and accountable and behaved better.
One idea whenever I taught a combination class I used two different colored dots on their name tags to remind myself who was in first and who was in second until I memorized it. Also we have a sofa and the kiddos love sitting and reading or working on it. Made it homey and comfortable ❤. Love your vlogs! I hope you have a wonderful year! ❤

So jealous of the desks on wheels. I skipped my workout the other day after getting my classroom desks arranged because I was so tired and sore from the lifting. Lol
Hi! Thank you for sharing your journey! Just a suggestion, I would place the 2nd graders in the front groups instead of the back. Since they are younger and may be less independent than the 3rd graders. I taught a 4th/5th combo early in my career and it was helpful to place the younger ones closer. I've been teaching in 2nd grade for 14 years since the combo class. Good luck to you! Combo is not easy, but you are super organized so that definitely helps! Try to do as much as you can together (where ever the standards overlap).
Interesting! I've put my needier students requiring a separate curriculum in the back. That way, I wouldn't be blocking the other students & since they'd be preoccupied I'd also have a good reason to turn my back to them 😅
I am so curious to know how your year goes. I've never heard of 2nd and 3rd grades in one class! Have a great year and enjoy your sweet 6 month baby girl!! She's precious!! They grow so fast!! 💖💖💖
Your daughter is so stinkin' adorable! I really like your classroom setup videos. They help me think my own classroom layout through. I'm curious...what does your district say about you not using the curriculum...the one you said you have to have in your room but will just store away? What subject is it for? Do any of the teachers in your district use it? One last thing. I can't wait to watch your videos as you go through this year. I'm anxious to see how you manage a grade level combo. I've never had to do that and can't wait to see how it all works. You'll make it great for your kiddos! Have a wonderful school year.
SoCal kinder teacher here!! I'd love a sit down talking video, probably once the year actually begins, explaining in detail your combo class...I have soo many questions lol! Are they high 2nd graders/low 3rd graders? Are you really expected to get through completely separate curriculums in the same amount of time? Can parents opt their child out of the combo? What parts of your day will be whole group? :)
The previous years teachers hand pick the kids for the combo. They put kids in the combo that are at or above grade level as well as have a strong ability to work independently. I am never expected to "get through the curriculum". Our district is pretty great about giving teachers autonomy to teach the standards how they see fit. Focusing more on standards than curriculum. Parents cannot opt out of a combo, and I don't know why they would! I will teach writing 100% whole group, but everything else separately in chunks. I am filming a whole video about my schedule and how I plan to do this, stay tuned!
I noticed that your blue and green themed bins from 6th grade, really popped when compared to the gray and white around the room, curious to see if you return to the cute green blue theme

when i was in my 5/6 split class, the desks were in rows. my grade was in two rows and the 5th graders were in the other rows. i think it was about 5 or 6 desks across and 5 or 6 desks down.
Wow. SUPER MOM. I remember those days and it's a tough balance. Odd question, but where did you purchase your cube seats under the small group table? Thanks for sharing!!!
Idea… what if you turned your teacher desk and put it on the wall… then move your U table in that space? It’ll open more floor space. 🤷🏻♀️ I got rid of my teacher desk YEARS ago because they take up space and I just wanted space. I don’t miss it because I never used it. Just an idea!
