Part 1: Albert Woodfox of Angola 3, Freed After 43 Years in Solitary Confinement

- democracynow.org - After more than 43 years in solitary confinement, Albert Woodfox is a free man and joins us today for his first broadcast interview. The former Black Panther spent more time in solitary confinement than anyone in the United States, much of it in a six-by-nine cell for 23 hours each day. Albert Woodfox was released Friday after he entered a plea of no contest to charges of manslaughter and aggravated burglary of a prison guard more than four decades ago. Prior to Friday’s settlement, his conviction had been overturned three times. Albert Woodfox was serving a five-year sentence for armed robbery at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola when he and fellow prisoner Herman Wallace were accused in 1972 of stabbing prison guard Brent Miller. The two men always maintained their innocence, saying they were targeted because they had organized a chapter of the Black Panther Party to address horrific conditions at the Angola prison, a former cotton plantation. Woodfox, Wallace and and a third man, Robert King, became collectively known as the Angola 3. For decades, Amnesty International and other groups campaigned to free the three men. Woodfox was the last remaining member of the group to be locked up. Today we speak to Woodfox and King, who was freed in 2001 when his conviction for killing a fellow inmate was overturned. Herman Wallace was freed in 2013, just days before he died from cancer.

I too cannot bear the thought of men and women being locked up in solitary confinement that long. Its cruel and unusual punishment...legalized torture by officials
Mr Woodfox is a soul strong person with his heart in the right place. What he has experienced in this life is just beyond words. The story behind the Angola 3 and Woodfox is an important one for mankind, leading us to look at racism and how to create a world without it. I recommend all to dig into this case because it is very interesting... and sad. But most of all personally I am so glad he is a free man......

Sorry that happened to your uncle. Truly horrific. Don’t worry about the virtue signaling idiots on TH-cam. She’s the kind of person who thinks only white people are racists I’m sure. Oh my gosh, he wasn’t even allowed to go to his mom’s funeral? I can just imagine not being able to go to my mom’s funeral... it’s so sad what they did to him. This cruel and unusual punishment shouldn’t stand. Nobody should ever go to solitary confinement ever again.
This guy, nelson mandela and hundreds or thousands more really inspire me with their resilience and willpower to keep going.

How on earth did this man come out of a solitary cell for 43 YEARS and still have his sanity. You'd expect him to come out speaking his own made up language drooling out of his mouth and taking panic attacks every time he was asked a normal question by another human.

My friend is in a prison in Florida and he is not allow to have this book. He is trying to stay sane and this book should be allowed in prison.
So he came out of prison and was thrust into a world with all sorts of technology and such

Noah miller in his book he talks about the lack of good evidence. But I don’t understand where I can find the real sources of evidence to see for myself. Dont forget that Angola, the penitentiary he was kept in was a former slave plantation. I watchrd a documentary where they talked about the history of it. Basically former slave owners wanted to get their slaves back, legally, so they created the prisons and succeeded. This is Amerikkka.

As a great admirer of Warden Cain and his seemingly enlightened way of running a prison, I'm gutted. I cannot believe the sheer inhumanity of keeping men in such barbaric conditions. I'm so sorry.
