  • I show a fix I came up with for the ever so crappy silverado center consoles that break a arm rests and get stuck closed as center consoles.

You have that wrong man, that little plastic "rod" doesn't work to open the latch at all it actually sits underneath that metal piece so that when you open the console it rolls underneath it so that it keeps the latch from accidentally opening.

After getting my latch to finally open (which took almost 30 minutes) I realized my problem was not more so the button not operating right, it was actually just the metal latch that was seized and in turn, the plastic button would and could not open, and that's why I believe the button felt like it wasn't able to be pushed in all the way. Blast it with some wd40 and make sure it moves back and forth and that should solve your problem! Mine is working perfectly now. Hope that helps some people!

Hell of a video and a great idea. Thanks for showing where the spring went too!
It helps dramatically to lubricate the latching mechanism as well. It fights a lot of rust/grime/debris when you try to open it.

At 3:24 he has that yellow piece about over where it goes. It's the anti open device, so that when the console is being used as a seat back, it prevents opening of the lid when you press the latch. It rolls under the lever on the latch when the console is up, and then it rolls back down when you fold the console down.

I just fixed my latch. I popped the piece out with a flat piece and there is a metal spring, I guess you could call it. I took a pair of tin snips and cut about a half inch off, as to get it some tension. I popped it back in and it works good as new. 2004 Silverado.

I couldnt get into mine by the latch button so i stuck screw driver in but its tricky cause you have to be under the bottom piece of plastic trim where the button is, about 3-4 inches in theres a latch lever you have to catch and press down. Once it popped open all i did was lubricate the latch mech, replaced the plastic dowel with a hard wooden one and most importantly reseated the flat spring in there and lubricated it where it slides on the plastic up in the handle.I think after enough use they work loose and kinda twist in there causing them to stop working. I didnt have to replace anything, cept for the dowel and that was just cause i didnt like that soft plastic piece and had a dowel the same size. Works great now. Don't get frustrated trying to pry it open, you'll break something. The latch is about a 1/2 inch to the drivers side off th center of the console which this video does show nicely.Got to be under the bottom piece of trim with that screw driver.

  • @aceofspadesc991

A shot of wd 40 or other lubricant fixes this issue without taking The mechanism appeart. Stick The straw into the gap between the button that releases the latch and the coin holder which allows the rod to move freely. The purpose of the white/yellow rod is to prevent the lid from opening when the seat is in the upright position. If you bypass it as shown in the video the lid can be opened when the seat is in the vertical position spilling the contents of the center console all over the backseat. I'm sure this fix works, but it's a waste of time when you can lubricate the mechanism and it works fine.

Great video. I think I remember watching this to fix the spring years ago, when I first cleaned it. I see its 10 years old), but One: I don't get the point of that pink stuff. You don't need it. You just need to be able to get the push button latch under the lock when you reinstall it. & Two: That white dowel: its purpose is to roll in the way of the lock when the console is upright. It is there so that you can't accidentally open the console with it folded back which would cause all your stuff to spill out. You can just take it out, spray some wd40 on the lock itself, and reinstall. You then risk hitting the button, and it opening upright, but who has ever done that? It would then require you to lube it again when the latch needs it, and not when the dowel gets dirty.

Console is removed with a T40 torks bit on the driver side hinge and 2 10MM bolts under a fabric patch on the passenger side. Slide the seats all the way back and recline them for easiest access. The lid comes off if you push a small punch in and force the hinge pin out. There are TH-cam videos showing that part.

Can someone tell me how to take the top lid apart? The metal bar that the latch grabs well the screws fell out of it? So it closes but it’s really loose because of the bar or hook isn’t bolted to the top of the lid?

  • @ralphmouth7856

Yep that roller is meant to roll up the slope so when you lift the console the lid don't pop open..still a crummy design tho brotha..good video.i like how you improvise and make stuff work instead of running to Amazon or autozone..👍

I used a long thin screwdriver and popped it up. There are 4 tab on the piece he took off and you can see where they pop in place. At 1:52 look to the left and you can see the foam through two openings, that is where the left side snaps on place. Two more on the right. I want to know how he stopped it from pivoting down.

This video should be taken down. Bad information all the way around. I wonder how much he charged his "customer" in labor to repair the cracks in that lid. You can find brand new color matched replacement lids all over the web for 35$ to 50$. As far as the latch sticking, as long as you haven't broken it pushing too hard on the button here's the easiest method. #1 to get it open use your left hand to hold the button in. #2 use your right fist and give it a Fonzie style love tap on the center of the padded area directly above the latch. Hit it a little from the left to right to get the bar on the lid to clear the hook on the latch. #3 Push into the hole with your index finger while holding the button again and you'll feel the button engage the hook. Continue holding the button so the hook will remain retracted to give the straw attachment on your WD-40 room to get in the area you need to spray. #4 Slide the straw in the side the hook retracts to toward the dash about an inch to an inch and a half in and give it I couple of quick sprays. I like to give it a couple of shots in all four directions but I try not to drown it in the shit. #5 Test your button. It should work now, but you should push the button over and over to clear any grit off of the pin. If it stays gritty feeling then repeat the wd-40. If you take your time and do it right this fix will make it feel smoother than it did new. If you like to shoot wd-40 in your door locks from time to time then add this method as preventive maintenance whenever your doing that. Twice a year should do it. If you already destroyed the hinge for the button like a guerilla then and only then you will need to pop out the change tray to get to the mechanism. It's a bitch to pop out and the tabs break real easy so be careful.

After trying to keep that little rod where you say it belongs, it wouldn't stay. Decided to check another video and realized a little wd40 and leave the rod alone was the correct way. Thanks for making a worthless video to waste our time and guiding the world into destroying a normal working mechanism that just needs a little oil/grease.
