Cardiacs are simply one of the greatest bands to ever exist, me and my mates(all musicians) would watch seaside treats which is simultaneously extremely creepy and absolutely hilarious every weekend after the pub along with the equally glorious all that glitters is a mares nest live concert film one of the best anyone has ever done. The late great Tim Smith our leader in the starry sky was a compositional genius of the highest order even in his last years being awarded a doctorate in music by the royal Scottish Conservatory was loved by musicians of all styles from modern classical, to Mr Bungle Mike Patton is a huge fan , blur, napalm death, Steve Wilson, Radiohead, Voivoid, plus so many others it gets ridiculous don't be put off by the wackiness it was all part of a whole artistic vision and the music is very serious stuff, but also fun and joyous a celebration of happiness and joy all around the world...oh and one of the most rabid fan bases of any band but they all tend to be lovely strange folk hope you continue your dive into the pond

Makes me really happy I called that Mr Bungle influence! Weird doesn’t bother me in the slightest, so I’m game to keep checking it out. Thanks for the insight, it’s really helpful

Yeah! And might I add the band Oceansize and Mike Keneally (Zappa guitarist/ multi instumentalist, solo artist etc) to the examples list of great musicians paying tribute?

Absolutely one of the best live bands 88-92.

Cardiacs have more ideas in this song than most bands have on a whole album, or often in their entire career. Utter genius, I'm so lucky to have seen them a dozen or so times at their peak. RIP Tim.

Thanks for checking this band out! If you want something still weird but slightly more digestible, with more of a rock style, have a listen to their song Core. :)

Weirdly this song seems to hit the spot for me and it's really immediate and catchy. Tarred and Feathered is what I'd consider a particularly awkward Cardiacs song for example. My favourite is Insect Hoofs on Lassie, it's like a Queen single that's just been warped to insanity. Infectious though.

'Is This The Life' is their 'commercial' track.

I spent months learning how to drum to this one.

I'd guess it's rather common, not quite being able to put into words what/how one feels during and after their first exposure to Cardiacs. Yes, this and numerous other Cardiacs songs are definitely, at the very least, WEIRD. They did that well. But they also incorporated elements of so many other styles/genres/aesthetics, all the while creating music that sounds quite literally like nothing else. Cardiacs are their own genre.
Nkw, listen to their last two albums, 'Sing To God' and 'Guns', in their entirety. Many others will say start with 'A Little Man, A House, And The Whole World Window.' It's certainly a great album, but I'd go first to the two mentioned, then 'On Land And In The Sea' and 'Heaven Born And Ever Bright.'
This the first reaction vid of yours I've seen and I really enjoyed it. I hope you decide to dive further into Cardiacs and more reactions to their stuff in the future. Welcome to the Pond. ❤

Theres no 'THE' in Cardiacs, It's just Cardiacs who are the most bizzare but clever band I have ever heard. They take a little while to get used to but when you get it...WOW!!!! LOL

You're totally on the right page with Mr Bungle. Mike Patton is a big Cardiacs fan.

Well done! They actually tuned down a lot of the weird theatrics later on in their non-career (though the music remained kinda far out). I'd suggest you check out their garage rehearsal version of Jibber and Twitch, at least to see what they're about without the makeup and sillyness. And there are quite a few more-or-less-related bands (The Monsoon Bassoon, The Sea Nymphs, Stars in Battledress, The Lost Crowns) worth checking out. I'd love to hear your take on The Lost Crowns and their song "Let loving her be everything." (Don't be fooled by the soft title.)

Love that your going into weird music! Love it, if you're looking for more weird music, there's always Sleepytime Gorilla Museum who originated around the same area as Primus and I think went to college together (?). You might like something like Sleep Is Wrong from them or Powerless

A remastered version of The Seaside album was released a few years ago on CD. I'd suggest Fiery Gun Hand from their Sing To God album as another good choice. The first part is slightly more accessible and the second part is an audio roller coaster ride.

The Duck and Roger The Horse is really Cardiacs weird, however it does have one of the best really powerful mini guitar solos - in the style of Joey Santiago (Pixies)
Sounds described them as "A crash between the cast of (A British sitcom) It Ain't 'Arf Hot Mum and a whiskey tanker. I fact not only would they sound like it but they would look like it".
If you're going to check out another Cardiacs song, go for Big Ship or Nurses Whispering verses.
Coming back to this song, the keyboards uses horses for courses or higgledy piggledy during the song, it's very clever. SO sad their inpirational leader Tim Smith was struck down en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Smith_(Cardiacs)
Plus Radiohead used to support them, hence their quirkiness..

I could point you in a scary-but-stoner direction. *There's Good Cud* (which might have something to do with "chewing the cud" - or grass - since they also sing "there's good stick" in one verse). Here's the Cyriac video version of it. th-cam.com/video/vs1kWoJid5I/w-d-xo.html
I'll see if I can find more cud and hide it in "replies", but this isn't working so well at the moment, so might end up cluttering your main thread. Just delete if it annoys you.

If you don't mind a more prog/ modern classical song (with video footage nicked from somewhere else featuring the band visiting a marijuana farm in the Netherlands, once - so a stoner connection), then *The Everso Closely Guarded Line* might be what you're looking for. (Not much makeup here.) th-cam.com/video/61CicoCgyd0/w-d-xo.html

If you get in the mood for another band that hams it up in a more "RES manner", and is nice and deliberately scary, *Lovely Little Girls - Massive Vulva Cantaloupe* should do nicely. th-cam.com/video/FuXnVdtlEsw/w-d-xo.html

If those kinds of songs are exactly what you don't yet want to watch/hear, then I can point you to a Cardiacs love song. It's a very Cardiacs love song, but I'm almost certain that's what it is. A love song. One of the most beautiful, uplifting, if slightly strange, love songs you'll ever hear. And it comes with a fan video made with "added-loving-care" (little in-joke, I suppose). No scary surprises here. It's all sweetness and light, as the poet, Matthew Arnold would've put it. th-cam.com/video/_IwqKUM5uqU/w-d-xo.html

I could just shut up and go away, now. ( 'T'were more politck so to do, I avow.) But I feel the need to point out that there's a whole universe behind that door. That wasn't a "typical song" of theirs. There be nonsuch, dear Voyager.
For instance you'll also find *The Sea Nymphs* somewhere in those deeps. th-cam.com/video/5NjQgbEduQQ/w-d-xo.html ( *A Sea Ritual* - sung by Them Three. Of a music that could only be when gathered in by Them Three.)

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew ปีที่แล้ว

There's pop as pop should be, too. *Vine* by *Spratley's Rats* (they changed their name - meant no harm, but changed it anyway). th-cam.com/video/DqFl_oMuTRI/w-d-xo.html
You could dance to it, but first make sure your medical whatever is up to date.

Maybe if you listened instead of interrupting the whole time. You even interrupted mid guitar solo.

You didn't react to the music at all just the weirdness, not a word about the genius of the composition. maybe it's not for you to be introduced to Cardiacs with this song.
