I assembled WAAG bags for a couple of years as a volunteer with Mt Hood NF. Thanks for covering this subject. This is super important for controlling giardia and cryptosporidium outbreaks, along with e.coli (did you know dogs are a major source of giardia?).
The FS asks all climbers to carry/use WAAG bags above treeline. We used a blue bag that we added gel crystals, a ziplock bag for sealing, and an exterior paper bag. It was definitely a homemade contraption, but there were not enough commercial bags available at the time for the Mt Hood climbing traffic and these were also cheaper because the FS budget was really low at the time. The pandemic came along and I haven't been called on since for assembling bags, but I carry one when I volunteer above timberline around the mountain, just in case!😂
Oh, you're supposed to shake the bag well before storing and the crystals take a bit to clump, we used regular cat litter btw. But I can't imagine how the crystals could overcome a case of the runs. We don't check hikers for full WAAG bags, the objective is to be smart and avoid polluting the drinking water so we are not required to boil it everytime we want a drink.

Did you see that you're supposed to tear the Biffy bag green plastic at the perforations. Then tie it around you and hold the front? You just squat a little and it's doesn't take any aim at all. Still could use more of that gel powder.
I went on a snowcamping class with the Sierra club. They gave us the Restop Toilet-to-go. I thought that the opening was small, but my aim was good. I mentioned the BiffyBag tie system to the leaders and they mentioned that they provided a mutt mitten for accidents.
One gal who came back from using one commented: "I never ever want to do that again".

Thanks for giving us the poop...on poop! Researched this in the past but never purchased anything, so I appreciate your comparison. Ended up quickly putting together a homemade emergency kit using multiple bags and a plastic container with a snap on lid for a pack-it-out area last summer, which I thankfully didn't have to use. Good reminder to buy the real thing now.

Good job on sensitive topic….my experience with wag bags has not been pleasant…..it was not difficult to use, but in the warmer weather, I could hardly stand the smell of carrying a wag bag around on a 3-4 or more day backpacking trip. It was terrible to say the least!

All disposable toilets are not created the same and hence are not designed to be used the same way. You should have read the directions on the Biffy Bag label. With 4 diagrams and a few words it tells you how to use it properly. The first 2 toilets you must use with a bucket or toilet otherwise you have to spread them on the ground, hover and aim. In other words make a mess. The Biffy Bag was designed to be used as a stand alone toilet system that needs no bucket or commode to be used comfortably. You simply take the two perforated straps, tie them around your waist, pull the specially designed bag up between your legs and let gravity do the rest. It is so well designed it is nearly impossible to soil yourself which is a great big plus if you ask me. The Biffy Bag material maybe thin but it is very stretchy and tough. In fact they use an additive that is used in ice bags making them remain flexible even at 30 degrees below zero. The silver transport bag has a puncture resistance of 13 PSI, a 50 PSI burst strength with a black out liner so no one can see what is inside. The gel on all of the bags state LIQUID SOLIDIFING GEL, not solid solidifying gel. They all need liquid to work as stated. The Biffy Bag powder is an effervescent powder that releases Oder neutralizers and engulfs the waste which is very impressive. Comes with almost 8 feet of 2 ply TP and the wet wipe is 2 X the size of the others. The Biffy Bag is far superior to the other 2 brands and has won the Guides Choice Award as the Worlds best disposable toilet.

Picked up a couple Hobo women near Fontana Dam on the Appalachian Trail and they had a plastic bowl hooked on the outside of their pack. No hikers carry a bowl on their pack. These women hike in cities and usually camp behind buildings so not to draw attention to themselves. No bathrooms are available. That bowl has their modern day chamber pot. The would line the bowl with a plastic grocery bag, do their business in the privacy of their tent, then throwaway the bag. It is that simple, just a bowl & a bag.

I just use doggy poop bags. Make a poop like out of a sandwich bag, with a veggie bag, a doggy poop bag and a zip lock bag also has a few large napkins wrapped up in a rubber band. Cheep readilly available. it is simple and can be closed up easily and transported. If you screw it up stay on the couch.

I hesitate to ask but, is this a 1 time use bag or do you use it over and over during the hike? Don't know how I got here but I subscribed out of the fact you had the confidence to make this video. A lot of the big youtubers have not done this. Great job!

the biggy bag has ties to wrap around your waist. So you you can in your car or on a hike hide and not have to squat too much.

You missed the point of the Biffy Bag. It is designed to tie around your waist with perferated integrated ties. You then you hold the front so it's almost like a diaper. Then you can poop while standing up... Toddler style. Best to slightly squat or hold your legs apart though. That's why the hole at the top is smaller. It's not made for laying it on the ground at all. Otherwise good video.

I definitely couldn’t poop while standing up. lol thanks for the tips on that bag though.

Actually I use it in the squatting position. This makes it conducive to use inside a tent with enough interior height. Why would anyone do a two in a tent? When it's storming outside. Thankfully my tent has about 42" interior height.

Evacuate your bowels before you go out and only eat bars while on the hike. If you have to poopie it will be small amount.
