Made In Kenya: Mobius Filling in demand for new SUVs in Kenya

- In 2022, sports utility vehicles, SUVs, were the most purchased in the personal passenger category of vehicles. This growing appetite is mostly fed by car imports, but local manufacturers in the automotive industry are taking up the space. Mobius Motors is now not only assembling vehicles, but also manufacturing cars targeting the Kenyan consumer with features aligned to the Kenyan terrain. Edward Chweya tells us more in this week’s Made in Kenya segment.

Good work Mobius. That is the way to go. It's extremely difficult and expensive to start from scratch. The faster way is to rebadge an existing model then over time modify and localize it. That is how Indian, Japanese and Korean cars started. I'm more interested with seeing Mobius 2 on the road because it is locally designed and with high local content.
I happened to see the newest Mobius 2 the other day on my way to work (the 2020 version, I think). Goodness! That car is rugged and gorgeous in real life! At 1.3 million it looks worth it. Karibu alone I am stalking him😂
5.9 M price tag is too steep even for the middle class. Consider revising it to the 4.5M range.
Originally Mobius made an entirely Kenyan vehicle, Mobius I, Mobius 2.
But Mobius 3 is a Chinese car they merely assemble

This machine car is strong , I saw it pulling a heavy car up the hill like a toy wow
Wacha wewe! It was pulling a KAY Rav4 which is not very heavy 😅. But I agree that road tests have shown it has power and quite comfortable in areas Prados have been dominating. Prados will have to humble themselves with the high prices they have been enjoying. I'm now a fan of Mobius.

@@samcaptain001 Captain, yes I agree that my comment is a bit radical, but with the kind of politicians that we have, they need such measures. The hypocrisy is big. Do you remember the day of reading the budget? What is the point of having the Treasury PS ride in an 1800 cc VW Passat from the treasury to parliament, after which everything bounces back to normal (riding in LC Prados and V8s)? Recently, we have witnessed some CSs like Kindiki and Duale, and CJ Koome, being driven in expensive Land Cruiser 300 GR Sport vehicles. Do they even know why that car is called a "GR Sport"? It's shameful, because they are being driven around the city in "off-road focused vehicles". My point is, recurrent expenditure needs to go down to pave way for sustainable development expenditure. In Mauritius, all Government officials are driven in Toyota Corollas, owned by private companies that are in contract with the government. If a government official acquires a vehicle that is high-consuming, they pay for it from their own pockets. Buying Mobius will support local manufacturing, which politicians, even the President himself, have been supporting.
Let the market decide,, if they make good cars people will buy otherwise it's just a waste

This is why many made in Kenya products don't attract the local market,at 5.9million shillings without import and excise duty means they have adopted the Indian mode of business where one seeks to make supernormal profits from a single product limiting market growth

The car looks good..but since you have admitted that our govt excempt some levies on your local company why cant you make it from 3m for it to gain popularity it needs before you increase its price once it has proven its worth on our roads..???
Kindly give car reviewers like @carnversations a chance to test and give feedback to their followers and viewers. It would help us to know whether or not mobius cars are reliable and issues to do with cost of maintenance and availability of spare parts and technical support. Thanks

The best way to make it is through partnerships, stop trying to figure it out, partner with VW, BYD or Toyota and learn how to produce world-class cars efficiently.
It's easier said than done on contract otherwise each country will do the same.

@@LEO-fw3fl I was not trying to be offensive, the question simply doesn't make sense. I'm just going to assume non of you are car guys. So in simple terms, SUVs are generally good off-road cars. A Jeep is a mid-sized SUV & not a car class. Land Cruisers, Jeeps & Land Rovers are some of the best off-road SUVs while Escalades, Suburbans are mostly used in the city but can still handle tough terrains but require lots of maintenance.
