As a Combat VET over 27 months in the desert... yeah in America we have the VA it's a long wait and if someone has some serious mental issues going on, it may be too late before they receive treatment. I have PTSD... certainly not trying to kill anyone who is not a threat to my life, but our system could be much better.
I work in a hospital and sometimes the hardest thing to do is get the VA to approve care for pts. Also our military personnel are not properly reimbursed for all they give up. A lot are unemployed due to being" overqualified," meaning employers aren't willing to pay them what they should. They are not provided housing or anything, and usually are struggling same as ordinary citizens.
The healthcare system is there, but it’s up to you to make the most of it. There are VA hospitals that offer free care for veterans, but you’ll need to follow up on your appointments. Unfortunately, some people don’t take care of themselves and don’t go to their doctor’s appointments 🥺🥺
you cant help the ones who dont want help and cant acept they have issues. in my country half of country who surived the 90ties have some form o ptsd. i have c ptsd war caused trauma since age 9. also i am only one who goes to therapy and takes my meds in my family and who went to mental hospital by my own will accepting i have a serious issues. like my shrink said, the ones who want help seek help... ptsd and alchochol and dru** dont go together it is a recepy for disater, forlashback, trgers, psychosis, depersonalization, derealisation, deassosiation etc.. who ever have ptsd and is a user or an alcholic it is just a matter of time before they or slowly unlive themsees likmy father with that or unlive like my brother did with rope or razor or pills, or unlive someone else. ptsd makes you being on edge all t time, paranoid, you have triggers, releiving things etc, add a booze or dr*** into a mix and it is game over, only question is when...

2:18 anything VA related, should be expected to take FOREVER! My mom (army vet) needs a specific procedure done before her surgery (scheduled for Feb), yet there isn't an opening for that procedure until March. And this type of thing happens to everyone. Imagine needing to talk to someone about your health and being told, "earliest opening we have is in April." It's beyond frustrating.
Don't say it 'Happens to everyone" - It depends on where you are - it's not a universal problem. My husband can get in to see his doctors within a few weeks, get all the equipment and meds he needs mailed to our house, and his surgeries have happened within a few weeks of him needing them. There might be something else at play - such as a doctor shortage, that has nothing to do with the VA system. I dunno, but your problem is not AT ALL what our experience has been.
@IslaSkye123 it's not though- not in "most places" unless you've done actual research, interviews, etc. What proof do you have that the VA is as shitty elsewhere as it is in your town? Oh, none? That's what I thought. Most ppl that work at the VA do their best bc they actually care about our vets but it's not their fault if there's budget cuts or not enough drs to go around.

@JoeinAlaska that's how it's supposed to work but not often the case... spent over 27 months fighting GWOT and I'm on my wife's railroad insurance where I get an appointment within a week every time...our system is shit!
Our experience has been quite favorable, with reasonable times, good service, etc. We have NEVER had these 'wait time can be over a year' things - not for neurologic surgery, orthopedic surgery, cardiac surgery, follow-ups, dermatology, GI.... never ever had a problem getting in within a month to six weeks for non-emergency issues.
Vets, Civil Servants and Contractors of the Government are the first to be praised and pandered to, but often left without proper treatment after their service. Especially if they are suffering from PTSD as there is still a stigma against even admitting this is a prolific problem as that would be to admit they force us who served under that flag and constitution, to do some rather horrific things that are entirely wrong on every moral, ethical and legal level. But as we literally have a law on the books saying we will invade the Hague should they arrest any US politician or Service Member for war crimes, they know they can do so without much fear of the outside world as we spend more than 20 times on defense as any other country on the planet. Food for thought.

I'm military and I strongly oppose that. Again: no other job guarentees free housing for life. Other jobs are just as dangerous (trucking, underwater welding and pipe-work, oil rigs, etc.) and they don't get these benefits - so you can't argue that the soldiers 'deserve it' for putting their life on the line: all sorts of careers do that for critical infrastructure. I think the healthcare is almost too much of a benefit, and should be pro-rated for time in service, deployments taken, and degree of risk in that job. I disagree with free healthcare for life for a 4-year pencil-pushing job.
