The house unlocks a new problem at every task you undertake. Nothing is straightforward, you must start a job holding your breath, will we get it done with no extra problems! hi hubertus! thank you for your suggestion ❤ we already have a steel pipe in that chimney, so making fire is not a problem, but we would like to not have water leaking into our bedroom wall 😊. The leak doesn't get into the steel tube but is just on the outside of the old smoke channel.

Yes of course! We've been using Ottosson for all our windows too :) The best for the wood is always to strip all the plastic paint but the idea for this project was to be a quick visual improvement 😅
Those big slates would make a beautiful path or patio. Loved the video as usual. Isis, you and Bertus are real grafters. One little suggestion, when cementing/using lime you can use your hands ( with gloves obviously) to fill an area and then just tidy up with a trowel. Always has worked well for me and helps to save time. No better tool than our hands.
Tell us how you learned your skills please. The work you do is such good quality. Also, are the roof rafter’s damaged by insects or water? I enjoy a château restoration in France and they have wood worm damage. Are these a problem in your region too? Lastly, Willie said to tell the kitties hello from their poodle fan. He loved the ending of the video with them in the box enjoying the warmth from your wood stove…so cozy. ❤
We have learned most of what we do by reading, watching and doing. bertus has been working with metal for a long time and i have watched (and helped) my parents renovate and build houses. i studied art and painting + archaeology which comes in handy at times with understanding the different building phases of our house and "reading the walls". in our previous house we diy installed our kitchen, we've done some plastering before and have always decorated our homes ourselves. nothing as big as this but everything we've done and learned before is finding its way into this project. 😊😊😊

A lot has happened again this week, and that you dare to go on that high roof isis. I dare to go on the one of our shed too but that is not nearly as high as yours. Since we do not have 2 full floors and an attic.
thanks for thinking along ❤ i'm pretty familiar with shellac and am 100% sure it's not shellac. as these are exterior shutters shellac would also be a really poor choice or finish. when dry it looked more like an acrilyc varnish but if it was indeed that it's strange that the stripper and speedheater did not work on it at all. i've heard from other people renovating in italy that they've encountered a similar finish in their homes but i should probably talk to the locals to learn more about what it is.
Last week you replied to me saying the slates at the eaves were no bigger than the tiles when I suggested otherwise. This eve detail is tricky to get right, even when one has been doing it for a long time. Maybe worth getting some skilled help(?)@@storiesfromthecascina
@@whitby910 yes! i remember ❤ but that was a bit of a misunderstanding/language confusion. I thought you meant with your comment from last week the roof slates were big. They are closer to the Alps but where we are not very different from tiles. The row of stones that cap the walls are though, and that's very visible from the outside. 😊
@whitby910 the previous owners of the house were respected builders (as well as farmers) who have been working with stone for a few generations. we are copying exactly what they did on the front of the house. Skilled workers have (extremely) long waiting lists at the moment unfortunately - I'm sure not only in Italy 😊. And maybe superlfuous but just in case we didn't make that clear: those big slate stones are not going back onto the wall 😊

Why does everything need to be painted. A like colored oil and leave the natural grain come through. You painted that beautiful door with that amazing hand forged hardware. I know its your house but natural is beautiful too.

At the moment we only use a few rooms on the ground floor, but when this roof is dry we'll start using it more. 😊

we are lucky to have an ecostazione nearby that takes small quantities of building debris. so far that has been enough for our needs.

I wonder if the shutters were shellaced rather then a true varnish used. Oil based paint cannot penetrate a shellaced surface.

yes we expected to find those 😊 but the leaks are in the (smaller) roof slates, not in the top row of (big) stones/slate on the wall.
