Well done to Stephen for getting the VOD out quickly after the Twitch VOD inexplicably got copyright claims that muted parts of it. Like Mal I mostly only experienced Sonic 2 as a kid (and 8-bit Sonic 1) so I didn't play 16-bit Sonic 1 till years later, but I've actually come to really like it. I finally beat it with all the Chaos Emeralds in 2012 and then was in a car crash the day after, and I was like "well no matter what happens at least I beat Sonic 1!" in the ambulance. (We were all OK in the end fortunately!)
Glad this is out. Wanted to catch the parts I missed yesterday, but the Twitch VOD is, uh... well, like what I think is most if not all of the gameplay got muted. Looks like it's all here, though. Hopefully this doesn't get demonitized.
Fun fact, back in 2019 during Comic Con, I met Duncan Gutteridge, the Original Sonic Artist for Sega Europe in the early 1990s. He mainly worked on the art cover for Sonic The Hedgehog 2.
1:27:00 Stephen asked about the special stages not fitting into the rest of the game. According to the US and British Sonic lore (which are different, but consistent on this point) the Sonic 1 special stages are the Warps of Confusion, weird other-dimensional spots orbiting Mobius each in which a Chaos Emerald was hidden after Dr Kintobor's machine exploded (turning him into Robotnik) and hurling the emeralds and rings across the planet. I always hate how eventually we got stuck with the Japanese Sega attitude of 'lol it's a videogame' when the US and British Sonic lore actually tries to explain game mechanics in a way that makes sense.
1:53 They're Burrobots, the precursors to the Grounders in Aquatic Ruin Zone in Sonic 2, which is what the robot in the cartoon was based on. There's a bit in one of the UK Sonic novels where Sonic fights Burrobots and then ends up being tortured by Robotnik by having a Grounder run him over and drill holes in his spikes, and it goes into how they're a refined version of the Burrobots from Labyrinth Zone.
Me thinking back on having unrestricted access to the internet (and a super spotty level of internet safety practices): yea that explains a lot about me.
90-100 is A, 80-89 is B, 70-79 is C, 60-69 is D, less is F. That being said, higher numbers are more common. The guideline I've heard is to add 25 to European grades to get the US equivalent, though I don't know if that applies to like multiple-choice assignments or the like (might be more of an essay/paper thing; you'd probably know better than me).
In the UK 70-100 is an A, 60-70 is a B, 50-60 is a C, etc. When we have American exchange students at my university I always make sure to explain this to them ahead of time or else they might jump off a bridge when they get their first grade back... the joke that goes around higher education circles here is that in America you get 60% for turning up and breathing oxygen.
@@GuyYouMetOnline Was different for me in NJ. Below a 70 was an F. An A was 93 to 100. 85-92, B. 77-84 is a C. 70-76 is a D. This was over 20 years ago though... Think it has changed now.
@@BlameThande When I was in school we didn't have a score system. Instead we had A* A B and C for passing grades in GSCE. This was back in 2006-2008 though.
I played Sonic 1 the first time a couple years ago on the Genesis Mini, and man did I not like it. With the bigger screen and removal of lives, Origins seems like the definitive way to play this game, which is good at least, but it can’t save atrocious level design past Green Hill.
as part of VOD squad thanks for release this one quickly, it was literally impossible to watch this one on Twitch passed Green Hill Zone >_>

Dude I'm glad you're okay but oh my- 😆

One thing about the VOD release is that we have all the audio separated out - if there's ever any issues we can fix it and re-upload it!
@StephenVOD That's good.

All you need to know about this vod is that Stephen’s brain broke at the beginning with “hilly jogs” and never really recovered
Great playthrough! The added chaos of Tails makes this a fresh co-op; I was also a Sonic 2 girlie so I can't wait for that one!

22:22 Ah yes the age-old question: Which came first, the Robotnik or the Eggman?
Mal as Sonic and Stephen as Tails brings to mind Surge and Kit from the IDW Sonic comics. If you know, you know
I remember playing this as a child. The water zone made me hate this game..... but not enough no stop playing it

Lest we forget to Sonic some hogs 🫡
9:30 71 is a C????? What broken system do you have there???
