@@Grendel1974 Do you remember and old white guy named Larry? I'm not sure what his actual job was but he was kind of like the gatekeeper at practice. You had to go through him to get in. I remember some guys on the team pranked him by putting a mannequin in the upper deck and saying "Larry who's that dude in the bleachers? I think he's filming practice, you better go get him!" so he had to walk all the way up there 🤣
Man, I miss how awesome a Pro-I formation looks with TEs and a fullback lead blocking. Even the 5 yard runs look majestic and rugged, especially with those old school, big shoulder pads and calf socks. Just classic football!
I’m so glad Corey Dillion won a Super Bowl with the Patriots! He is the most underrrated running back of all time! He made my childhood/teenage memories so much fun growing up!
Dad and I were there. We sat in the east end zone in full rain gear. Couldn’t see much of what was happening, just Corey running out of the gloom and into our end zone again, and again, and again …
I've still, to this day, never seen a tailback with Cory Dillon's size, move as fast as Cory could. He had one of the single greatest seasons in college football history in his one and only season at the University of Washington. The man was an absolute monster.
Thank you! I've been looking for this footage for at least a decade. Such a great Husky memory! Such a dominant 1 year for Corey Dillon who was the backup to Rashaan Shehee to start the season. lol
Oh man, I was at that game. Miserable conditions, but watching him go for 300 in one quarter? Incredible. I felt bad for San Jose State. He left after that quarter, and both backup running backs went for over 100 yards each, if I remember correctly.
I watched Dillon play at Garden City JUCO. Every time he touched the ball, the crowd stood on their feet because you knew something great was going to happen.
Wow. Unbelievable performance but I have to include the absolute excellent job by the O-line. I grew up in the northwest and loved watching the conference teams play, but was in the Army and missed a lot of games during that time. What a way to start my day watching this.
My wife and I were at this game. It was a miserable day for weather (we left after Dillon broke the record because we were soaked) Freeze the video at 5:09 and you can see a military green poncho in the very upper right corner... that was either my wife or me... but what a fabulous spectacle to witness.
He's just a side-show now. He never really could fight, he was just bigger and had an intimidation factor, but once his opponents caught him with a punch, he would drop and cover up. I believe his last "win" was in 2018, and he just had a fight canceled this year, but I don't know why.
We've had some great running backs at Washington through the years but IMO Corey Dillon was the best of the lot. Because of off the field problems he only played one season with the Huskies and rushed for 1,555 yards, but he didn't even start every game! He only started because of an injury to the starter! And he had a great 10 year pro career also, with one SB Ring.
I know this video was about Dillon, but I ended up watching what Bob Sapp was doing on each play. What a freakishly large man with physics defying speed.
@@mikeabel7577 Then he blew his NFL career by getting busted using steroids. And now he is pretending to be able to fight in Japan, but is really a side-show now.
I was in the stands that day. What should be mentioned is the other two backs that came in, after Dillon was pulled, each ran for over 100 yds. The O-Line was amazing that day. And before anyone dismisses SJSU, they were a decent program back then.
Very cool that you remember that. I was on the sidelines (redshirting for the Huskies) and although everyone was happy for CD were were especially happy for the other two guys, Mo Shaw and Terry Hollimon. If not for the opening loss to a very good ASU team we would have been conference champs
Corey Dillon was a man among boys in his lone UW season. Coach Lambright sat him out the rest of the game after the first quarter of this game. I honestly believe UW was protecting Hugh McElhenny's rushing record of 296 yds, because Corey would have put the record out of reach that day. If anyone saw the UW-USC game, Dillon Johnson was running wild and ended up with 256 rushing yds. I noticed toward the end of the game they started running the other back more and limiting Dillon's touches, even though the game was still in reach for USC. Things that make you go hmmm...
Wait - @0:45 - that Bob Sapp (#72) is THE Bob Sapp of MMA and kickboxing fame. His fighting career was fascinating and there are some very good documentary type videos about it on TH-cam
They pulled him after that first quarter, since SJS was obviously outclassed and UW had more important games coming up and didn't want Dillon to risk injury in a game already won. Since running backs generally get better as the game goes on while defenses generally get more gassed, he might have rushed for a thousand yards that game if UW wanted to run up the score.
Obviously incredible in many ways.... but man those pads sure were huge! I wonder if it's just better tech or did we make rules saying "no you can't have 6inches of padding"?
Wow, first play shown, that's the Bob Sapp that went into MMA fighting? Anyone know what happened with the extra points? Four TD's, but only 25 points. Did they not have a kicker that day?
Yep. I met him in the dorms once. A ridiculously huge person. I was 5'6, 125 pounds lol. Just crazy how differently sized we can be. You'd have needed three of me to make one of him. His feet were like size 17 or something; just gigantic.
Remember watching this game as a kid. So awesome! Too bad Huard is such an anti UW announcer now. You'd think after being apart of something like this, he'd actually support his alma mater.
Look at who they were playing. Not that impressive, it would have been impressive with a team that was highly ranked, but, we all know he never would have come near those numbers if it would have been a better team.
My alma mater! I'd wager the smash mouth defense of my '96 Huskies over this soft '23 Huskies we got today! Yes the latter is undefeated (barely) but they are far too reliant on finesse. Sapp would destroy '23 finesse dawgs! That freakishly strong Corey Dillon would literally do push-ups on sidelines when his defense was on field. Gotta love the purple helmets it's better when our "W" is gold!
This video was awesome! You should do more of these! I love learning more about college football history!

That is, in fact, THE Bob Sapp at guard for Washington. MMA Legend and former IWGP Heavyweight Champion.

Dillon was a monster in his prime -- the only thing keeping those Bengals teams interesting
Im an old Boston guy, when I heard Dillon was coming to the Patriots I was so excited, he's one of the all-time great backs and all around playmaker.
Corey played fantastic, but the blocking at the point if attack and downfield was superb.
I am impressed how he looked around and picked up his blockers on the 84 yard run

The only question is really: what the heck was happening on those PATs? 7 - 13 - 19 - 25? Four TDs and only a single converted PAT?
I think Washington realized what a mismatch it was and started showing mercy, which is why they were just running and throwing screens.
